Those Classmates who Suddenly Disappeared -
Chapter 1399: Suspicious Cargo
Chapter 1399: Chapter 1399: Suspicious Cargo
Ouyang Jin thought that although they had control over the surveillance point, sooner or later Organization X would discover the issue, and they would surely tighten their control over Dark City. By then, squeezing everyone in would become extremely difficult.
Ouyang Jin also conveyed everyone’s sentiments, which was to keep Gu Fan from worrying, to stop thinking about shouldering everything alone, and to face things together.
"Alright!" A surge of boldness welled up in Gu Fan’s heart, and he began to formulate a plan.
In fact, there were two ways to infiltrate Dark City. The first was to deceive the gatekeepers; the second, have the gatekeepers be in on the plan—no need for deceit.
The gatekeepers at the Dark Gate were usually directly dispatched by Organization X, and even the Four Great Nobles had no right to interfere. This route was a hard path. Gu Fan needed to spend time learning which people guarded the gate and then investigate their actual situation, looking for the right opportunity and so on.
Therefore, Gu Fan felt that the method of deceiving the gatekeepers was faster and more effective. As for how to deceive them, Gu Fan and Ouyang Jin themselves were successful examples.
Ouyang Jin said, "The cargo truck I modified, although it has a hidden compartment to hide one person, can only smuggle in one person at a time, making it way too slow."
"I know. I’ll figure out a way," Gu Fan replied, his thoughts also on cargo trucks. Dark City was very short on supplies, so there were trucks entering and exiting every day. The trucks were mainly handled directly by people dispatched by Organization X, and the Four Great Nobles didn’t have the right to intervene.
Was it feasible to control the delivery personnel when they left, grab their ID plates and access permits? Gu Fan thought this might seem viable but was highly difficult in practice because Organization X would surely have considered this.
Gu Fan had once observed the situation at the gate. The cargo trucks were thoroughly checked to make sure no one could sneak in. In other words, it was impossible to send Su Hui, Lin Xi, Lu Yi, and Irina—all four of them—into Dark City in one go.
"I have a way, but I’m not sure if it will work." The man with glasses hesitated, seemingly afraid of something.
Gu Fan immediately asked, "What is it? If you have any good suggestions, just spit it out. We need all the advice we can get right now."
The man with glasses steadied himself and organized his thoughts, "Actually, one time when we went to pick up the supplies that Ouyang Jin secretly helped us smuggle in, we found blood and shoes inside the truck."
"What do you mean? Are you suggesting?" Gu Fan began to understand.
The tall man seemed reluctant to continue but still spoke up, "I suspect that sometimes the trucks aren’t just transporting materials, they’re transporting live humans."
Gu Fan’s face darkened. How could he have forgotten that vampires needed to drink human blood? If vampires fed on the blood of people from Dark City, who would dare come to Dark City in the future? Which meant...
"If that’s really the case, then Organization X is either constantly sending people out to catch ’food’ and then grouping the captives together to be transported into Dark City by truck," Gu Fan said, turning to look out of the window at the Tower of Darkness that towered into the clouds. It was hard to imagine the fearful expressions of those taken into the tower, facing the devouring by demons.
The man with glasses added, "Generally, cargo trucks return to Dark City and head to the freight center to unload, but some trucks go directly to the Tower of Darkness."
Understood. Those trucks headed directly for the Tower of Darkness must be the ones carrying live humans, and such trucks and their drivers tended to be fixed.
Gu Fan inquired, "Ouyang Jin, you should remember which ones are the regulars at your repair shop, right?"
"Heh, you really did choose the right person to be your guide. I happen to remember," Ouyang Jin’s smug words had just finished when he saw the corner of Gu Fan’s mouth curl up in a not-so-well-intentioned way.
Ouyang Jin got a little scared, "What are you planning to do? Let me make it clear, I absolutely won’t take any risks."
"You’re already here. If we don’t work together, how are we going to get out alive? Plus, you’ve got to justify hiking your prices by twenty percent to me, make me feel like it’s worth the cost," Gu Fan said with an expectation of agreement.
But Ouyang Jin was resolute in not compromising, "I could also go directly to the Tower of Darkness and betray you. Maybe I could even get a good bounty."
Gu Fan shook his head, "Sorry, I have a relative who works for Organization X. If she knows you betrayed me, she will definitely avenge me. Plus, I’m protected by the Destiny Stone Body Guard, and I’m fairly certain I could fight my way out. So, you think carefully about it."
Hearing this, Ouyang Jin froze for a second and then quickly changed his tune, "How could that be? We’re comrades who have fought alongside each other for many years, facing death together countless times. How could I betray you?"
Gu Fan looked content, "Good. Now I’ll give you a glorious task: keep watch over the cargo trucks coming in and out near the Tower of Darkness, then leave a mark on the truck that feels familiar to you."
"I knew it’d be something like this," Ouyang Jin sighed, his attitude far from eager.
The man with glasses expressed some concern, "You’re not planning something big, are you? Please don’t drag us into it. This place is Organization X’s territory, and you can’t beat them."
Hearing this, Gu Fan’s heart tensed. Then, looking at the man with glasses, the tall man, and the muscleman, he saw their unease and anxiety—clear signs of what they were thinking.
If he didn’t manage to allay their fears now, in a bid for self-preservation, they might just run off to Dark City to betray Gu Fan.
Gu Fan wanted to say something, but seeing how guarded they were, as if they couldn’t hear anything he said, he paused.
At this critical moment, Ouyang Jin stepped forward and gave a good pep talk, stating his willingness to come here and take a risk was because of his unwavering trust in Gu Fan. He hoped the three would place their trust in Gu Fan as they did in Ouyang Jin.
"This!" The man with glasses, the tall man, and the muscleman all hesitated.
Gu Fan knew revealing their identities meant these three were also in danger, adding to the pressure. He was even more aware that exposure was inevitable, so while planning to sneak in Lin Xi and Su Hui, he also had to devise an escape plan for everyone.
"Do you three ever think about leaving Dark City to start a brand new life outside?" Gu Fan suddenly asked, causing the three men to hesitate once again.
They exchanged glances, seeing each other’s stunned expressions. It seemed as though they were tempted but dared not indulge in the fantasy.
"Think it over and answer me." After saying that, Gu Fan stood up, left the house, and once again looked up at the Tower of Darkness and the oppressive, clouded sky, feeling the weight of it all.
