Chapter 1363: Chapter 1363: A Long Way Around

On the day after he received the task, Gu Fan obtained an access permit and a car. It seemed that Catherine hoped Gu Fan would immediately set out to execute the mission.

An identity card, access permit, and the database information—three in one—allowed Gu Fan to freely enter and exit Dark City as Tai. Before the mission even began, Gu Fan had figured out the verification method to enter and exit Dark City.

However, Catherine did not let Gu Fan go alone; instead, she assigned someone named Li to assist him. Li, like Gu Fan, was also from the Orient.

Li drove, while Gu Fan sat in the passenger seat. After they left Dark City, the car sped along the Death Road.

Previously, when Gu Fan entered the Dark Primitive Mountain, he had traversed the River of Survival. This time he traveled the Death Road and only then realized the brutality of the Death Road.

The road was covered in bloodstains after bloodstains, and bones lined the roadside, informing everyone who traveled this way that the Death Road was aptly named.

As Li drove, he chatted with Gu Fan, "What’s there to be surprised about? Who hasn’t arrived in Dark City via the Death Road? Anyone who’s made it alive, hasn’t it been a matter of luck?"

Gu Fan immediately responded, "You’re right. Many years ago when I first set foot on the Death Road, I was terrified by this sight. Even now, seeing it again, I feel the same fear."

"Yeah, just one look is enough to sense the horror of this place." As Li spoke, he couldn’t help but recall the time he and over a hundred others traveled together, yet only three survived to reach Dark City, enduring various terrifying attacks that, years later, still terrified him.

Li couldn’t help but sigh, "Now, most vampire creatures have been wiped out, making our trips in and out of Dark City much easier. Otherwise, who would want to come out here, unless it’s those risking their lives to join Organization X and deliver goods?"

Hearing this, Gu Fan realized that in the past, the Death Road was fraught with danger; Dark City required supplies, necessitating some to transport them, thus offering the opportunity to join Organization X.

First, having the right identity was not a problem. Second, daring to repeatedly drive a truck loaded with goods along the Death Road was indeed risky.

For the people of Dark City, joining Organization X certainly made it easier to get by, but repeatedly transporting goods along the Death Road was far too risky.

Li transported goods once and earned his way into Organization X, but did you think that was the end of it? No, you still needed to transport goods for three years before you could leave that position.

Li was fortunate. During his three-year tenure delivering goods, he encountered numerous dangers but survived every time. After fulfilling his three years, he was reassigned to work for the nobility in the West Wing.

Among those who transported goods during the same period as Li, only he survived, so many called him "Lucky Li."

Upon hearing Li’s story, Gu Fan began to take an interest in him. He wondered what kind of combination "Lucky Li" would make with doomsayer Lu Yi.

Naturally, Li never expected that meeting Gu Fan would also change his fate.

Their vehicle drove along the Death Road, which was currently unobstructed. They hadn’t seen a single vampire creature, reducing the likelihood of an attack. This also meant that Organization X didn’t need to constantly replenish their personnel for transporting goods, which in turn implied that joining Organization X would be even more difficult in the future.

Li couldn’t refrain from saying, "Gu Fan, you’re really lucky. Organization X hasn’t taken in any new members for a while now."

"This..." Gu Fan was dripping with cold sweat. If he had known this, he wouldn’t have rashly joined.

If many people had joined Organization X around the same time, Gu Fan could have blended in without drawing much attention. But currently, he was the only one joining within this period, even though he used the name Tai—his own photo was on the record.

"May the heavens bless me; don’t let me be noticed," Gu Fan worried, watching the pitch-black forest from the window, where the peculiarly shaped trees resembled the grimacing faces of demons, giving off a truly eerie vibe.

Li then said, "You’re worried we’ll be unlucky and just happen to run into a vampire creature, right?"

"Of course, anyone who has experienced it would have a mental scar," Gu Fan pretended to agree.

Li patted Gu Fan on the shoulder to reassure him, "It’s been half a month since those transporting goods have encountered any attacks. Everyone feels that Death Road might be due for a new name."

"Yes, if it continues like this, it might indeed need a new name," Gu Fan casually replied.

The trip from Dark City to the small town required most of the day by car—a distance neither long nor short.

Gu Fan and Li parked the car; it was now 4 a.m. According to Li, it was still dark. Their sudden appearance in the town at this hour could raise unnecessary suspicions.

Gu Fan was puzzled: what did unnecessary suspicions mean?

Li explained it like this: the upper echelons of Organization X had strictly forbidden the Four Great Nobles from entering this town. If Gu Fan and Li arrived at the town this late, Organization X’s informants would surely take notice, which could lead to questioning the nobles of the West Wing for disobeying orders, followed by the nobles asking why Catherine acted alone.

"I see!" Gu Fan finally understood, then had another question, "But our departure was also logged. Won’t Organization X suspect us?"

To that, Li said, their purpose was to visit another town to receive a few business clients on behalf of Catherine, not to enter this one. So there were no worries. Besides, Gu Fan and Li were just two people; Organization X likely wouldn’t think that two people could make much of a difference.

Now, Gu Fan and Li had parked the car in the woods and climbed a tree. They observed the dark town below through binoculars, almost no lights visible, only the faint outlines of buildings in deathly silence.

"If I were Organization X, I’d surely guard the entrance and exits strictly. If we appeared, they would definitely watch, take photos to record, then go back to make comparisons, to see if we’re from the Four Great Nobles," Gu Fan reasoned, so Li inquired, "Then, in your opinion, how should we enter this town?"

Gu Fan thought for a moment, then smiled, "Of course there’s a way. It’s just a bit troublesome and will take some time. But most importantly, we need a good sleep now. Tomorrow will be another exhausting day."

Li looked convinced by Gu Fan’s plan, "Alright then, I’ll leave it to you tomorrow."
