Those Classmates who Suddenly Disappeared -
Chapter 1200 Jie’s Predicament
Chapter 1200: Chapter 1200 Jie’s Predicament
Dark City was situated on the border of several countries, making it difficult to assign ownership; therefore, no country governed it, and no laws restrained it.
At first, it was just a small village with a population of no more than a hundred people. But as more and more people from various places drifted in, houses were built in increasing numbers, and the village gradually grew into a small town.
Later, the X Family arrived, and with their wealth and methods, they conquered the place. They established order and transformed the small town into Dark City, which then attracted even more people.
Now Jie, Hai, and a few from the Hunter’s Guild had successfully infiltrated Dark City. They observed the place daily, looking for vulnerabilities to exploit.
Dark City might appear as nothing more than a slum from the outside, with messy two- to three-story houses everywhere, many of which were in disrepair. There was no planning whatsoever: a house here, a house there.
The area was tight, so there was a shortage of land supply. These houses were closely packed, living in them couldn’t help but feel oppressive.
The one thing that stood out was the dark eighteen-story building at the very heart of Dark City, a black pillar soaring up between heaven and earth, exuding a gloomy and terrifying aura.
Every time Jie looked at that dark tower through the window, he felt uneasy, as if countless vicious eyes within the tower were staring back at him.
Indeed, this dark structure was Organization X’s headquarters. From atop the high building, the members of Organization X could survey the entire Dark City. With surveillance from various vantage points, nothing happening in Dark City could escape their eyes.
A person from the Hunter’s Guild kindly advised, "Alright, stop looking. The more curious you are about that dark building, the more likely you are to be suspected. Everyone living here doesn’t want to get noticed by people from Organization X."
Heeding the advice, Jie stopped looking at the dark building and said softly, "We’ve been observing for this long and haven’t found anything; it seems we need to get closer."
The person from the Hunter’s Guild shook their head: "The ones before us got too close and were discovered by Organization X. Not one of them lived to leave Dark City. If you want to go, I won’t stop you."
"This..." Jie was worried but at a loss for what to do.
Hai interjected, "Every so often, I see large trucks heading towards that dark building. Do you know what’s hidden inside?
The Hunter’s Guild shook their heads, "Not sure. The trucks are sealed off all the way from entering Dark City to reaching Organization X’s headquarters. No one knows what’s inside them."
Hearing this, Hai sank into thought, but, noticing what he was pondering, a person from the Hunter’s Guild quickly cautioned, "Don’t act rashly. If you intercept it along the way, Organization X will soon have us all in their sights, and then it’s game over for everyone."
"I know, I won’t act recklessly without full assurance," Hai said, and right after he finished speaking, the noise of trucks could be heard outside.
Hai immediately picked up a pair of binoculars with a camera function, moved to the window, and focused on a passing vehicle, snapping a photo of the driver.
"Got it!" Hai opened the photo to see a clear picture of the driver.
The Hunter’s Guild instantly understood Hai’s plans: "You want to find a breakthrough with this driver."
Hai nodded, "He can come and go from Organization X’s headquarters. Maybe we can use his help to get in and out safely."
The person from the Hunter’s Guild was not optimistic, "It’s a good idea, but why would he help you and betray Organization X? Who would have the guts to do that?"
"There’s always a way; how can we know without trying?" Hai looked at the driver’s photo with a meaningful smile.
Jie glanced at his phone, his mind swirling with thoughts. He knew it had been a while since he had contacted his good friends Gu Fan and Lu Yi. They must be worried about him.
Someone from the Hunter’s Guild reminded, "Better not dwell on it. The mobile signals here are all monitored by Organization X. Every message you send and every call you make will be known to Organization X."
In Dark City, there’s one rule: when you arrive, you must hand over your previous phone. If you insist on maintaining contact with the outside world, you can only use the special phones made in Dark City. Everyone knows what the deal is with those special phones.
Before, someone from the Hunter’s Guild used one of these special phones to send coded messages to their companions outside, thinking they could evade Organization X. However, while Organization X couldn’t decode the meaning of the messages, they found the content suspicious and decided there must be something amiss. They didn’t bother with evidence and simply captured and tortured the Hunter’s Guild members.
Jie had one of these special phones but dared not use it. One mistake could draw the attention of Organization X. In short, upon arriving here, they were essentially cut off from the outside world.
However, before coming, Jie and Hai had prepared. They had hidden their phones in the forest outside Dark City, knowing they could retrieve them and send messages out if they made it outside.
But Dark City had another rule: it’s easy to enter, hard to leave. To leave, you must get Organization X’s permission, or no sooner would you escape than you’d be hunted down.
Dark City was surrounded by forests, home to dangerous wild animals and various poisons. Those who ran into the woods rarely returned. If you wanted to leave, the only way was the sole road, but you’d surely be spotted by Organization X and pursued.
"It looks like it’s time to apply for a job," Hai said with determination in his eyes, as if he already had a plan, while the others smiled bitterly, "You’re not thinking of joining that team to dig in the forest, are you? Unless absolutely necessary, no one wants to go there. It’s literally risking one’s life for money."
"We have no choice, we need money, we need to contact the outside world," Hai said, and everyone else felt resigned, especially as they looked at their own dwindling funds and realized they couldn’t hold out much longer.
"Alright, let’s find some work. I believe as long as we don’t venture too deep into the forest, we’ll be fine." At this point, this was all they could do, hoping to overcome the challenge ahead.
However, what they had not anticipated was that the forest surrounding Dark City was far more terrifying than the city itself.
Before long, Gu Fan learned about Jie’s predicament. For the sake of his close friend, he decided to risk it all. Despite not being fully prepared, he was set to assault Organization X’s headquarters, and the shocking secret of Dark City was about to be revealed.
