Chapter 1199: Chapter 1199: Where Did the Friend Go?
Gu Fan got the big boss’s mobile number and immediately contacted him, claiming that it had been a long time since they met and he wanted to thank the big boss for saving his life last time. So, he invited the big boss to dinner and asked him to bring Irina along, under the pretense of building rapport. With rapport, there was bound to be endless possibilities.
Based on the big boss’s understanding of Gu Fan, he knew Gu Fan definitely had something up his sleeve, and it was not going to be anything good. Getting involved would mean getting wrapped up in serious trouble. However, the big boss was also curious to see what Gu Fan had in mind.
So at the agreed time, the big boss and Irina appeared in a decent restaurant’s private room.
"Thank you both for coming. I’m very grateful," Gu Fan was polite, taking the initiative to pour wine for the big boss and Irina. His friendly demeanor was so exaggerated it was suspicious.
Irina looked at the fine wine without any appetite because Gu Fan’s smile across from her seemed malevolent, as if drinking the glass meant she was agreeing to something yet to be discussed.
"Spill it, what’s this all about? If I can help, I will," Irina didn’t want to keep guessing at Gu Fan’s intentions and went straight to the point.
Gu Fan adopted an appearance brimming with emotion, "When I think about how we joined forces against the enemy last time and how we had such synergy on our first collaboration, as if by some predestined force, we were destined to become comrades in battle."
Upon hearing this, Irina showed a look of disdain, "What do you mean, Gu Fan? Last time, you were the one who refused to cooperate with us. Don’t tell me you want to go back on your word now."
Gu Fan feigned surprise, "I refused? How could that be? It would be an immense honor for me to fight alongside you all; only a fool would refuse to cooperate with you."
The big boss couldn’t help but laugh, "It looks like you’ve run into big trouble, Gu Fan, and that’s why you’re now thinking of working with the Hunter’s Guild."
Gu Fan gave an awkward smile and then nodded, "Yes, I’ve encountered some issues, but they’re not really big trouble. Besides, I’ve already dealt with them. Organization X has been interfering with my life again, which is incredibly annoying. I realize that if I don’t completely get rid of these guys, my life will continue to be endlessly disturbed, which is not at all what I want."
"You want to take down Organization X," Irina said, somewhat surprised, and then she smiled meaningfully, "No wonder you’re coming to us. Indeed, we have the same enemy, but that doesn’t mean we can work together. That was what you said before, if I recall correctly."
Gu Fan quickly explained, "Please, that was weeks ago. We’ve all moved past that. This time I’m talking about real, sincere cooperation, and you know, think about how it was back then, amidst all that danger, and then you all came charging in—so formidable. Although you said you were the good guys, I had to be cautious, right?"
Although Gu Fan’s reasoning made sense, Irina still seemed reluctant to agree easily, "You say no to collaboration and then yes to it as you please. Aren’t we making ourselves a bit cheap?"
"That’s why I invited you, to apologize in person and make amends with a drink," said Gu Fan and proceeded to toast, downing his drink in one gulp.
Irina nodded, "You seem quite sincere. But after all the things you’ve said about me last time, I was really upset. I couldn’t sleep for three days and three nights. Do you know how much that hurt me emotionally?"
"Damn, this woman sure knows how to negotiate," Gu Fan thought nervously, feeling that if the discussion continued, he would completely lose the upper hand.
"Sorry, I’ve hurt your beautiful soul, but I promise that once we formally cooperate, I will use love and warmth to heal your wounded heart." Gu Fan’s words were awkward, almost nonsensical, as he tried to change the subject.
Irina rolled her eyes, "Since you assure me so, I will reluctantly agree on behalf of the Hunter’s Guild. However, since we’re talking about cooperation, there naturally has to be unified command, right?"
"I knew it..." Gu Fan inwardly scorned Irina, thinking about how to gain an advantageous position in the cooperation.
Irina continued, "The Hunter’s Guild is organized and disciplined. If you’re working with us, you must follow our instructions. How does that sound?"
To this, Gu Fan shook his head, "I believe cooperation is about mutual benefit and equal negotiation, not one side overpowering the other. But for cooperation, unified action is necessary, and unified action calls for unified command. For now, it can be you guys."
"What do you mean ’for now’?" Irina frowned, seemingly not accepting this proposition.
The big boss spoke up, "Alright, Irina, you don’t understand Gu Fan. The guy has his own judgments and ideas, so let’s just forget about this unified command thing, okay?"
At these words, Gu Fan was delighted, "Truly worthy of being the big boss, having worked with me and knowing my reliable way of doing things."
The big boss was unimpressed, "Give me a break. Last time I collaborated with you in the Triangle Sea Area, I didn’t get anything out of it. It was all just unpleasant memories."
Gu Fan hurriedly objected, "Nonsense, that experience was life or death for all of us, whether we cooperated or not. You can’t blame me for the unpleasant memories."
"Fine, since we’re going to cooperate, let’s get our act together and figure out how to deal with Organization X," Irina became serious, looking intently into Gu Fan’s eyes, "You said you want to take down Organization X, and that’s our goal too. But the sheer scale of Organization X is beyond what you can imagine. I’m not trying to dampen your spirits, but our current ability is not enough to pull this off."
Gu Fan nodded in agreement, "I understand that this isn’t going to happen overnight. I hope our first step in cooperation is for you to provide me with a lot of information about Organization X, such as the location of their headquarters. Right now, I need intelligence to make a judgment call on them."
"Alright, I can tell you some things about Organization X now. The headquarters of Organization X is in a place called Dark City," Irina explained in detail what Dark City was like and the immense dangers it posed, making Gu Fan understand that attacking it would be as difficult as reaching the heavens.
The Hunter’s Guild had already sent several teams to infiltrate Dark City, but so far, very few had managed to survive. It was extremely difficult to live there.
However, the big boss was recently very interested in Dark City and had sent his subordinates to gather intelligence within it.
"Wait a minute, big boss, did you say you sent your men into Dark City? That wouldn’t be Hai, would it..." Gu Fan’s heart sank, as he had heard that Jie had recently been out of the city, apparently doing some work with Hai, and he wondered if perhaps Jie had also gone to that dangerous place.
