Those Classmates who Suddenly Disappeared -
Chapter 1069: Opposing Professions
Chapter 1069: Chapter 1069: Opposing Professions
After waving goodbye to Li Shi, Gu Fan still felt too excited to calm down, strolling along with a buoyant gait, humming a tune. He hadn’t felt this happy in a long time since all that stuff happened.
"High school was great, utterly carefree," Gu Fan couldn’t help but miss those days. However, the moment he opened the door, a chill hit him, sending a shiver from his head down to his feet.
Lin Xi sat on the sofa, pretending to flip through a magazine, but her cold glance toward Gu Fan at the door made him break out in a cold sweat.
"Oh, look who’s back from the high school reunion," Lin Xi said with a slight smile as if welcoming Gu Fan home.
Su Hui and Lin Yue tactfully hurried upstairs, knowing the living room had become a battlefield of right and wrong, and it was best not to get involved.
Gu Fan chuckled dryly, "Why didn’t you tell me you were coming, so I could have come back earlier?"
Lin Xi shook her head, "Forget it, you guys don’t get to have reunions often. How could I be so heartless to disturb you, so I chose to suffer in silence here all by myself."
"What suffering in silence? You had Sister Su and your brother with you, didn’t you?" Gu Fan had just finished speaking when he received a cold stare from Lin Xi, sending a shiver of terror down his spine.
Lin Xi then put on a smiling face, "So, did you enjoy the high school reunion? Did you see the girl you had a crush on back then?"
"No, I didn’t have a crush on anyone in high school; I was totally focused on my studies," Gu Fan certainly knew better than to tell the truth, or he’d be dead meat.
Lin Xi wouldn’t let it go, "It’s normal to have liked someone in high school, and it’s been so many years; there’s no shame in talking about it now. Besides, I trust you, so can you tell me? It’s okay, I won’t be mad."
"As if you wouldn’t be mad," Gu Fan understood Lin Xi too well, so he didn’t take the bait and turned the question back on her, "You said everyone had someone they liked in high school, so who did you like?"
Hearing this, Lin Xi immediately got angry, "What does it mean who I liked in high school? That’s not important. The important thing is I didn’t go to any class reunion to rekindle old flames."
"I didn’t have anyone I liked, and I haven’t tried to rekindle any old flames. I only love you, for all of my life," Gu Fan swore solemnly, truly afraid Lin Xi would continue with this nonsense.
Instantly, Lin Xi’s face brightened with a smile, "Hey, I was just asking. Why are you taking it so seriously, even making oaths? As a qualified girlfriend, don’t I trust you?"
"If you trust me, that’s more than I could ask for," Gu Fan finally breathed a sigh of relief and then, struck by inspiration, he quickly changed the subject, whispering to Lin Xi, "I’ve noticed something odd about your brother recently. It’s understandable that he gets back from work very late, but he keeps coming home at such late hours, and sooner or later, your parents are going to notice. When that happens, we won’t be able to keep it a secret."
"Oh, right!" Lin Xi pinched Gu Fan’s nose with a smile, "You’re trying to change the subject. Are you feeling guilty about something?"
"I really am not!" With his ruse exposed, Gu Fan felt guilt creeping in.
Meanwhile, Su Hui and Lin Yue, eavesdropping from the second floor, genuinely felt sorry for Gu Fan. The couple wasn’t even married, and Lin Xi already had him under tight control.
Lin Yue asked with some confusion, "Sister Su, have you noticed anything strange?"
"Strange? What do you mean?" Su Hui didn’t quite follow, but Lin Yue added, "When my sister got angry just now, it seemed like the house shook a little. Could it have been my imagination?"
Upon hearing this, Su Hui felt a pang of alarm and quickly said, "How could that be? It must have been your imagination."
Lin Yue scratched his head, feeling that couldn’t be right and wondered if it was just because he had been too tired lately.
Looking at the time, Lin Yue suddenly exclaimed, "Oh no," rushing down the stairs, which startled Gu Fan and Lin Xi.
Seeing Lin Yue heading out in a hurry, Lin Xi immediately followed and asked, "Where are you going now?"
As he put on his shoes, Lin Yue replied, "Sorry, I have work to do tonight. I’m off to my job."
Lin Xi was surprised, "A job? Wasn’t your workplace shut down already?"
"My boss has taken care of it, we’re reopening..." His words trailed off as Lin Yue realized he’d misspoken. Turning back, he saw that Police Flower Su Hui was looking at him with an amused smile.
"My goodness, how could I forget that we are in opposing professions?" Lin Yue braced himself and headed out the door, his heart flitting all over the place, fearing that if Su Hui followed him, their hideout might be compromised.
After Lin Yue had left, Gu Fan, Lin Xi, and Su Hui were at a loss. They had thought that bringing down that underground nightclub would keep Lin Yue quiet for a while, but they hadn’t expected that Lin Yue’s boss was so capable that he could reopen the business so quickly.
Lin Xi was anxious, "What should we do? Let’s just be straightforward, cover our faces, storm Boss Hong’s place, kidnap him, and dump him on some deserted island in the Triangle Sea Area, so he can never harm anyone again. That way, we’d be doing a good deed."
Su Hui disagreed, noting that taking down Boss Hong wouldn’t do much; Boss Jin would step up next, and Lin Yue still couldn’t break free from the gang. If they were to move, they would have to target several members.
Lin Xi glanced at Gu Fan, making him feel unsettled, unsure of what this young lady might have in mind.
"Isn’t your relative in some organization, and a powerful one at that? And importantly, the people under her command aren’t exactly saints. Why don’t you ask your relative to step in? That way, we wouldn’t have to trouble ourselves," Lin Xi said nonchalantly, unaware of Gu Fan’s complications.
Gu Fan shook his head, "Stop it, my relative isn’t simple, and I want to keep my distance from them. I don’t want to ask for their help at all. To owe them a favor, I have no idea what they’ll want me to do in return."
"If this won’t work and that won’t work, what are we supposed to do? I can’t just watch my brother head down the wrong path," Lin Xi said with urgency, looking to Gu Fan for help.
"Alright, I’ll think of something. Hopefully, it won’t drag us into another ridiculous mess," Gu Fan actually wanted to live in peace, but he knew that until he fulfilled his ultimate mission from Destiny Stone, such peace would only be temporary.
Speaking of Organization X, Gu Fan thought of Helen, who hadn’t stirred up any trouble recently. This lack of activity worried him even more; he feared they were plotting something secretly.
Unknown to Gu Fan, his worries were about to become reality. Organization X had already started to cast their net wide, the city was filled with their informants. Despite appearances of calm, tumultuous undercurrents were flowing, and the most frightening adversary had arrived without a sound.
