Those Classmates who Suddenly Disappeared -
Chapter 105: The Wolf Pack
Chapter 105: Chapter 105: The Wolf Pack
On the second night of our journey, everyone set up their tents, built a fire, and gathered together to chat and eat while admiring the beautiful night sky. Afterwards, everyone retired to their tents to sleep.
Honestly, we were not used to camping in the wild. However, after a full day’s fatigue, we didn’t care much about comfort and one by one fell into a deep slumber.
Gu Fan had a dream, in which he found himself in a city enveloped in darkness and filled with ancient architecture. As he walked around the desolate city, an eerie silence consumed him.
Unsure of his location, Gu Fan found himself in front of a sacrificial altar with many steps leading upwards. Driven by curiosity, he ascended the steps, with each step echoing bizarre sounds around him.
Upon reaching the highest point of the altar, he was horrified to see twelve of his missing classmates tied to pillars, lifeless, and covered in blood.
"How can this be?" Gu Fan wanted to take a closer look, but suddenly he felt a void beneath his feet and began to plunge uncontrollably into a dark abyss. The sensation of fear jolted him awake.
Gu Fan opened his eyes back in reality, in his own tent, with Lu Yi sleeping soundly next to him.
"So it was just a nightmare," Gu Fan sighed in relief, chuckling at how he had frightened himself, drenched in cold sweat.
Suddenly, Gu Fan sensed something strange. He could hear gnashing sounds, which were neither snores nor sounds made by Lu Yi, who was only breathing softly in her sleep.
The sounds resembled those made by a wild beast. Startled, Gu Fan remained still, casting his eyes around the tent in search of the source.
He spotted it — dark shadows moving outside the tent ... and they seemed to be on all fours. His first instinct was wolves; he couldn’t believe he’d encountered them on the second night itself.
"Stay calm, stay calm! The tent is an entire unit with zippers tightly locked, the wolves can’t break in for a while," Gu Fan whispered, while keeping a close eye on the movements of the shadows outside, and nudging Lu Yi on the side.
Lu Yi, half-asleep, mumbled groggily, "What is it?"
Gu Fan quickly covered Lu Yi’s mouth, instantly waking her up. Seeing the fear in Gu Fan’s eyes and his gesture for silence, Lu Yi realized something was terribly wrong.
Gu Fan whispered into Lu Yi’s ear, "There’re wolves outside!"
"You’re kidding!" Lu Yi’s first instinct was to reach for her shield, the only weapon she had.
Gu Fan was unsure about the number of wolves outside, as wolves usually moved in packs and they almost certainly weren’t alone. Besides, he had no idea about the situation in other tents.
He grabbed his phone, attempting to minimize the screen light, set it to silent mode, and sent a group message warning everyone about the situation.
Soon, everyone received Gu Fan’s message. However, the sounds from the mobile phones drew the interest of the highly hearing-sensitive wolves, which seemed to be even more interested in the tents.
Gu Fan realized that this was a risky move, but he had no better options and could only gamble it out, hoping that everyone was prepared to overcome the crisis.
Everyone started waking up and seeing the shadows moving outside; they were terrified.
Even Ouyang Jin, an experienced guide, never encountered such an event. This was indeed a first-hand experience.
Jie, who was with Ouyang Jin, tightly gripped his baseball bat. He didn’t know how much pain a single swing would inflict on a wolf, and he certainly didn’t want a face off.
At that moment, inside the largest tent, Lin Xi and Qin Jia were huddled together. Lin Xi had taken out all her wolf repellent sprays, ready to distribute them to Qin Jia, intending to spray them at first sight of danger.
Even Su Hui was nervous, with her hands, tightly gripping a baton, trembling slightly. Truth be told, she wasn’t afraid of unarmed humans, but these were ferocious wild wolves, and definitely more than one.
The worst thing was that Su Hui saw shadows moving on both her left and right — a clear sign of bad news.
"What should we do? The camels are still outside.," Ouyang Jin was extremely worried about the camels, for they were his livelihood; he depended on them to ferry tourists around and earn his living.
Seeing the message sent by Ouyang Jin, everyone felt a knot in their stomachs. They were stuck - what could they do without the camels to cross the desert?
Watching the shadows outside, hearing the teeth-grating noises, every person felt their heart pounding with fear. Jie started controlling a drone from outside, broadcasting the situation to everyone’s phones.
Two wolves were circling Su Hui’s tent, one was at Gu Fan’s, one at Du Jun and Xu Haowen’s. There were also a couple lurking near the middle area, while several others seemed to be in the outer perimeter, all eyeing the camels.
Because the camels were tethered, they couldn’t go anywhere. Sensing the threat, their escalating panic drove everyone’s heartbeats faster. The situation was urgent, they needed a plan.
"What should we do, do we count to three and everybody rushes out to fight the pack of wolves, or do we just stand by and watch the camels get eaten?" Gu Fan wasn’t the only one lacking in clear judgement.
"Damn it, is this how we start our journey?" Xu Haowen grumbled, suddenly letting out a sneeze - unexpectantly, it caused Du Jun’s face to turn pale.
The noise was too conspicuous. One of the wolves immediately focused its attention on Du Jun and Xu Haowen’s tent, even attempting to shred it with its claws, triggering two other wolves to rush over as well.
Xu Haowen sneezed again. Even though he tried to suppress it with the palm of his hand, it did not help, and thus it served as a clear signal for the wolves outside. Immediately, three wolves launched an aggressive attack and violently rampaged onto the tent.
"Oh my God!" Both Xu Haowen and Du Jun froze, their tent was shaking like an earthquake under the wolves’ relentless attack.
Thankfully, this tent was purchased by Du Jun. It was of good quality and hadn’t been punctured by the wolves’ sharp claws. The tent was an attached unit with a thickened air cushion at the bottom. The combined weight of the two of them provided some stability, preventing the tent from being overturned by the three wolves.
However, after the incessant scratching of the wolves, the pole holding up the tent seemed on the verge ofbreaking. Du Jun, regretting not having any bodyguards with him, was fraught with worry.
"What do we do, what do we do, we need a plan now!" Xu Haowen said, terrified. The sounds outside were extremely alarming, especially the fierce howls of the wolves. He felt as if they were impatiently anticipating their next meal.
Footage showed that the tent of Xu Haowen and Du Jun was swaying violently under the attack of the three wolves – it was heart-stopping.
Gu Fan of course didn’t let them face their impending doom. However, to rush to their rescue could also put many more people at risk. As Gu Fan raced to come up with a plan, Jie was already on the move.
Jie directed the drone above Xu Haowen and Du Jun’s tent, causing it to circle relentlessly– creating a disturbance to divert the wolves’ attention.
The wolves were intrigued by the circle-formation, tempering their aggression. Giving Xu Haowen and Du Jun a chance to catch their breath. The hope was that the drone would keep the wolves away.
However, a sudden sneeze from Xu Haowen grabbed their attention back. The wolves lunged again for the tent, gnashing their teeth, claws scratching frantically. The terrifying face of a wolf could be seen through the tent, dangerously close to Xu Haowen and Du Jun.
Seizing some unknown courage, Du Jun accurately landed a punch at one of the wolves’ faces – though it didn’t cause much damage.
Xu Haowen was following suit, taking responsibility for one side of the tent. When a wolf lunged towards the tent, they either counterattacked with a punch or a kick, putting up a fight against the wolves despite the barriers. As the tent shook violently, they felt as if they were in a small boat fighting against a fierce storm.
Xu Haowen and Du Jun were not in the most dangerous situation, as five other wolves started to close in on the camels. This left Ouyang Jin, who considered the camels as his property, extremely concerned: "God, my livelihood, I must protect it."
Just then, Jie had an idea. He rummaged around in his pocket and found a remote controller - pressing a button, a deafening alarm echoed from among the camel pack.
The alarm was one of the devices Jie had brought along capable of triggering an alert. The sudden distress signal startled the camels, their panicking movements frightened the wolves, combined with the ear-splitting volume of the alarm, definitely intimidated the wolves.
Seeing the wolves hesitating to move forward, everyone breathed a slight sigh of relief. But the wolves did not leave, seeming to want to make an attempt, worrying the group on how they would pull through the night.
Perhaps the wolves only needed one camel to satisfy their hunger, Ouyang Jin could come to terms with this kind of loss. What terrorized him was the possibility of the wolves taking down several camels at once. Moreover, the wolves had started another attack on the tent of Xu Haowen and Du Jun.
With the ongoing offensive, the three wolves were soon joined by a fourth, magnifying the potency of their attack. After enduring the barrage, Xu Haowen and Du Jun’s tent was eventually upturned. They were in big trouble now.
"God, we can’t go on like this, we must come up with a solution." Gu Fan watched helplessly. If they didn’t act soon, it might be too late. But what could be done?
Comparing their situation to that of the wolves, they were clearly disadvantaged. There were fifteen wolves whereas only eleven humans on their side. Given that Professor Luo was old, and Lin Xi and Qin Jia were basically non-combatants, their chances were looking grim.
