Chapter 84: Chapter 79: Pursuit, Collision
Inside Kosai City, compared to the previous sole focus on defense, there was now a feeling of relaxation on the outside but tension within.
"Stick close to me when we go out later, and don’t fall behind," Lucien whispered a word of caution to Carly and paused before instructing, "Don’t use your Bloodline Power unless absolutely necessary."
At the moment, Carly was also in a bit of disguise, at least on the surface, so her obvious half-fairy features wouldn’t be easily spotted under the simple transformative witchcraft.
Lucien’s caution was to avoid any unnecessary trouble.
After all, a live half-fairy, or even the body of one, was quite valuable, not to mention that the purity of the Bloodline implanted in Carly was of the higher-ranking Moonblood, which was worth much more than those half-fairies active on Kosai Island.
Moreover, the existence of fairy ruins on Kosai Island meant that those of a certain race related to such ruins would undoubtedly receive preferential treatment. In this context, Carly’s half-fairy status could become even more sensitive, and she might even face hostility and underhanded harm from Bennett or Lilia.
After all, everyone was just temporary allies.
"I understand, Master Lucien," Carly said as she clenched the Origin Bow in her hand and nodded gently.
However, Carly soon turned her attention to the three Second-level Wizard Apprentices standing separately to one side. Her hand holding the bow tightened slightly, but upon seeing Lucien standing in front of her, Carly’s heart gradually relaxed again.
Carly knew that these three were the wizard squad that would be the first to rush into the Fog Tide, serving as pathfinders and bait.
Although they were temporarily granted some defensive Witch Tools or special defensive methods, they would have to face the possibility of attacks at any moment within the Fog Tide, with an extremely high probability of death!
Among these three was Philer, a Second-level Wizard Apprentice who had previously tried to form an alliance with Carly for self-preservation.
As a Wizard Apprentice extremely skilled in defense, he was specifically chosen by Bennett to carry out this bait mission.
"Philer, it’s up to you later," Bennett looked at his student with a smile and then patted him on the shoulder.
Sweat dripped from Philer’s nose as he looked at Bennett and nervously nodded, his mind involuntarily recalling the scene when Lady Fia approached him a few days ago.
"If you go, the Praise of Moonlight will be yours after you return; if you don’t, you’ll die now."
Philer’s Adam’s apple moved. Thinking of the precious potion that could elevate him to a Third-level Wizard Apprentice, he steeled his heart, turned to the other two apprentices who stood to gain nothing, and commanded forcefully, "You two rush forward later..."
And as Philer was speaking, outside Kosai City, more half-fairies were taking advantage of the Fog Tide to harass them.
"Quickly, try to inflict wounds on those half-fairies," Lilia said coldly as she glanced at the three Second-level Wizard Apprentices, and in her right hand, she held the doll named Adeline.
"Charge!" Philer gritted his teeth, gave a command, and spurred on the other two Wizard Apprentices to charge out of Kosai City with him, pursuing the silhouettes of half-fairies in the Fog Tide.
"Let’s follow," Lilia said after a brief wait, picked up Adeline, and then smeared a drop of fresh blood on Adeline’s lips.
"Adeline can go find her friends now!" The coarse cloth doll spoke in a crisp voice that seemed a bit ingratiating. It then floated in mid-air and began moving forward.
Lucien watched the cloth doll Adeline, who was leading the way, with a hint of vigilance in his heart.
This was the only thing in their group that Lucien could not see through, and according to previous attempts to identify it, this eerie Witch Tool was even tied to a Formal Wizard.
"All of its functions seem to require blood as a medium to activate, so don’t leave any of my blood behind later on," Lucien cautioned, watching Adeline floating ahead while silently speculating the limitations of this peculiar Witch Tool, contemplating effective ways to deal with it.
In case he and Lilia had a complete fallout, he would need to deal with the creepy Witch Tool doll right before his eyes.
"Oh, Adeline’s friends seem to be in trouble, Adeline is going to help them!" After moving slowly for a while, the coarse cloth doll Adeline suddenly cried out, then started moving quickly.
"Keep up!" The team began to accelerate, but this acceleration caused their previously compact formation to stretch out considerably in an instant.
"Carly, be careful," Lucien said as he and Carly maintained the same pace in the middle of the team. At the same time, he cautiously scanned the surroundings, fearing that they might end up in direct combat with half-fairies that could appear out of nowhere.
"Mr. Lucien, it feels like I can sense part of the emotions of the plants, similar to when I’m casting the ’Insect Repelling Spell’ and can manipulate the mosquitoes," Carly whispered to Lucien. At that moment, she felt an affinity between her own blood and the trees around her; in the dense forest, Carly felt as if she were returning to a long-missed home. She didn’t even need to actively inquire—by merely listening, she could hear the various pieces of information the plants were sharing with her.
Lucien’s eyes lit up, but he made a hushing gesture to Carly.
Carly glanced at the Wizard Apprentices ahead, nodded slightly, and kept quiet, but she still tugged gently at Lucien’s Wizard Robe and looked to the left, indicating a special situation there.
Lucien didn’t utter a word, but there were already two vials filled with deadly poison in his hand.
If they encountered the group of half-fairies later, the deadly witchcraft he had specifically prepared to target the Fairy Clan would play a significant role.
"Adeline has found her friends! Wow... how despicable! To think they snuck away to sleep here behind Adeline’s back!" Up ahead, excitement and a touch of reproach filled the voice of cloth doll Adeline.
However, at the moment, the "friend" that Adeline was referring to was not in the good state she described.
He was lying quietly on the cold, damp ground, with a vast hole blasted through his chest.
Philer and another apprentice were struggling to hold on against the assault of three half-fairies, relying on a Witch Tool and a defensive witchcraft.
"Attack!" Lilia charged forward first, and almost simultaneously, a mass of vine arrows and wooden spears flew from the left side of the team.
Clearly, the group of half-fairies had been ready for a head-on clash with Lucien and his company. They even wanted to use the natural advantage of the terrain to inflict heavy damage or even annihilate Lucien’s group of meddlesome wizards in the first encounter!
