Chapter 214: Chapter 193: The Truth in the Depths of the Dream
Lucien’s lips twitched slightly as he watched Earl Sanaxis assume a somewhat deliberate demeanor.
This must be Earl Sanaxis seeking his help, or rather asking for his aid; however, clearly, the man was still holding onto his pride, hence presenting himself in a "gratis assistance" manner to entice him...
Nevertheless, Lucien was also interested in the depths of the Dream Layer mentioned by Earl Sanaxis.
After all, for many wizards, the Dream Layer was a difficult-to-explore special area, and it also served as the best experimental ground for studying the powers related to dreams. In the Wizard World, the extraction of dream powers was exceedingly challenging; yet, in the Dream Layer, it was as common and accessible as air.
Not to mention the precious materials and valuable life samples that could only be found within the Dream Layer.
However, Lucien was also aware of the Dream Layer’s strangeness and dangers. There, many special rules existed that were different or even contradictory to those in the Wizard World. Emergency situations beyond his knowledge might arise, making the dangers hard to manage.
Remember Helen wizard, who had been a second level wizard? Wasn’t it due to the backlash of dream powers that she had been forcefully sealed by him, a first level wizard, and then refined into his Servant Puppet with the help of the power of dreams?
Moreover, the greatest danger of the Dream Layer lay in the erosion and assimilation of the body by the power of dreams.
It was similar to when Helen Wizard had opened a rift between the Dream Layer and the Wizard World within the academy, causing a massive influx of dream powers that transformed a portion of the area into a Dream Layer environment. All life forms in the Dream Layer were assimilated by the dreams at varying rates and eventually became an integral part of the dream.
Once that happened, there might still be a chance to become a dream creature, or perhaps perish inevitably along with the destruction of the dream when a life awoke.
Thinking of this, Lucien couldn’t help but hesitate. He bowed his head slightly, quickly weighing the pros and cons in his mind.
"May I first ask what you want me to do in the Dream Layer?" After a pause, Lucien turned to look at Earl Sanaxis, who could barely conceal his anticipation.
"Of course, it’s to help this lord... ahem, of course, it is to accompany you to collect Dream Crystals," Earl Sanaxis said, his eyes darting away almost revealing his inner guilt.
"If it’s for the Dream Crystals, then please allow me to refuse. After all, no Witch Tool, no matter how precious, is worth more than my life. However, if you, Sanaxis, have other inescapable reasons, I feel we might still negotiate," Lucien said quietly, his fingers ceased their rhythmic tapping on the tabletop.
After pausing for a dozen seconds, he then looked at Earl Sanaxis and spoke solemnly.
"Does a grand lord like you need my help? Nonsense! This is the greatest insult to the great and noble Earl Sanaxis!" The voice of Earl Sanaxis was loud, but it always seemed superficially strong.
He angrily stepped down from his "grape throne," looking as if he wanted to find something suitable to prove his strength, but he kept looking left and right and couldn’t find an appropriate opponent.
After turning around, the angry Earl Sanaxis picked up a specimen pin placed on the table.
Furiously, he grabbed the steel pin with his tentacle and tried hard to snap it, his body turning somewhat purple from the strain, yet the sturdy pin remained unchanged, not even slightly bent.
"Actually, I could have handled it, but such a waste of your experimental equipment would be somewhat regrettable," Earl Sanaxis dropped the steel pin, looked towards Lucien, paused slightly, then forced an explanation.
Lucien also remained silent, watching Earl Sanaxis for a while before silently handing him a wooden toothpick.
"Thanks, but no need," Earl Sanaxis’s body squirmed slightly, the color of his body surface gradually changing from purple to light blue.
Following an awkward silence, Earl Sanaxis seemed to deflate all at once. He slumped onto the table and then looked at Lucien, "Alright, you bipedal furry beast, you’ve won, you successfully defeated the great and noble Earl Sanaxis, though the way you won was somewhat ignoble."
The last few words of Earl Sanaxis were spoken softly.
Lucien simply watched Earl Sanaxis silently, waiting for him to continue.
"Why are you staring at me? You think I can’t handle losing?" Earl Sanaxis seemed a bit ruffled by Lucien’s intense gaze, he snorted, but finally spoke somewhat reluctantly.
"Alright, I admit, I had some troubles in the Dream Layer. That place is not very friendly towards dream creatures. I had planned to use that Nightmare creature to test it, but it seems she had been altered too thoroughly, so the attempt failed."
When Earl Sanaxis spoke these words, his tone was a bit deflated, "Of course, I wouldn’t stoop to deceiving you, that place does indeed have lots of high-quality Dream Crystals. Just random picking would yield a large amount..."
As Earl Sanaxis spoke, he seemed to sense that his previous actions were somewhat unseemly. After pausing for a moment, he suddenly stopped speaking, "Never mind, we’ll talk about it later. With your power level, tsk tsk tsk..."
"Could you tell me more about that place? I’m quite curious about an environment deep within the Dream Layer that is unfriendly to dream creatures," Lucien did not mind Earl Sanaxis’s intentional taunting, but instead looked at him, seeking specific details about that unique location.
"That place is the real area of the Dream World..." After being silent for a few seconds, Earl Sanaxis hesitated before uttering these words.
"The real area of the Dream World?" Lucien was puzzled by Earl Sanaxis’s statement.
"Knowing these things now won’t be of any use to you, so don’t be too curious about certain things; it may bring disasters beyond your imagination."
Earl Sanaxis sounded a bit irritated, and afterward, no matter how Lucien probed him about the topic, Earl Sanaxis no longer engaged, seemingly touched by something he cared deeply about.
"Surely you must at least tell me something about that real area?" Lucien looked somewhat helplessly at Earl Sanaxis, who was putting on a brave front without the capacity, even suspecting he had fortified his Immortal Body just to stand his ground while talking.
"That was once a key node in the Dream World, one of the cornerstones for absorbing the power of dreams, and of course, it also hides... some clues I’m very keen to confirm," Earl Sanaxis eventually couldn’t resist Lucien’s repeated inquiries and revealed some details about the region.
"In that place, the power of dreams is completely isolated, no matter how powerful the dream creatures are. Even lord-level mighty dream creatures will find all their dream-related abilities nullified upon entering... But the place is dangerous, and there might even be ’companions’ invited by other dream creatures fighting each other inside."
Earl Sanaxis slowly shared the intelligence he had, "You... never mind, the dream nodes will reappear after some time, we can still wait for other opportunities or the emergence of the next dream node."
Earl Sanaxis spoke somewhat casually and nonchalantly, emphasizing that the item didn’t really matter to him.
However, Lucien didn’t buy the lie that Earl Sanaxis obviously wouldn’t lie about, and instead silently analyzed the potential risks.
"What might be the power level of the strongest opponent there?" After pausing for a moment, Lucien still asked this crucial question.
If the baseline opponents were all level three Wizards, then Lucien felt that even if he wanted to help Earl Sanaxis, he wouldn’t have the power; on the other hand, as a friend who had known Earl Sanaxis for so many days, he’d certainly advise Earl Sanaxis to know his limits.
"The strongest... probably around the level of a second-level Wizard, as the main opponents are all dream creatures invited here, they don’t have the face to invite a level three Wizard to fight desperately deep in the Dream Layer. Moreover, if the opponent’s power was too strong, do you think I could still be alive to come back?"
Earl Sanaxis thought for a moment and gave Lucien a rather accurate upper limit of strength.
Second-level Wizard, huh...
Lucien paused briefly, but soon he smiled, "I think now we can finalize some more stringent details, Sanaxis."
"That’s right... this time it’s like they are picking up the scraps we don’t want." Earl Sanaxis apparently did not notice what Lucien was saying, so he initially spoke self-absorbedly, before realizing a bit belatedly that Lucien’s tone seemed to imply agreement.
"Two-legged hairy monster, do you know what you’re saying!" Suddenly, Earl Sanaxis roared, his tone excited, as if he had been deceived by Lucien.
His eyes flicked towards Lucien, seemingly wanting to say something, but ultimately turned into unintelligible muttering.
After mumbling for a while, Earl Sanaxis looked at Lucien and murmured softly. "Forget it, your own decisions can only be borne by yourself, just like fish in dreams needing enough courage and determination to come ashore to eat cat meat..."
"According to the principle of equivalent exchange in the Wizard World, let’s talk about the compensation first, two-legged hairy monster." Suddenly, Earl Sanaxis’s voice became more formal, and in front of him, a paper similar to a contract scroll of the Wizard World appeared, filled with dense text.
