Chapter 539: Two Women, Two Futures

Chapter 539: Chapter 539: Two Women, Two Futures

Chen Ke pulled open the door to his room, crossed into the Illusion Dream Center, where Slavin was sprawled on the windowsill, aimlessly staring out at the bizarre scenery.

When he sensed Chen Ke’s entrance, he immediately ran over and grabbed Chen Ke’s arm, frightening Chen Ke into shaking him off hastily.

Slavin’s complexion was poor, and Chen Ke could see that his spirits were low and he had fallen into some kind of paranoia.

"Chen Ke... can you get me out of here?" Slavin asked.

His voice shook a little, a pleading tone to it.

Chen Ke frowned slightly, but he also understood Slavin well. The Illusion Dream Center had no concept of time; one wouldn’t feel hunger, thirst, aging, or even death. Unless you killed yourself by jumping off a cliff, one might experience the taste of eternal life.

However, as a small floating fragment of the dream world, the Illusion Dream Center had its limited and monotonous scale. It was just a lone cliff floating in rolling clouds.

At the same time, for Chen Ke, it was a perfect Wind Harbor, serving as a transit station among various locations, but for Slavin, it was just a one-sided prison incarcerating him.

Slavin was not Diana; he was not Chen Ke’s friend, thus he did not have the power to freely come and go. Eternal life in such a place was torture.

"You have no other choice. At least here, the organization behind White can’t find you," Chen Ke said.

"I can’t stand this loneliness... it’s just too boring... What’s worst is that I never see another soul," Slavin started to unravel.

"You haven’t been here that long. Isn’t it good to be alive? Do you want to go outside?" Chen Ke questioned.

"When do you plan to let me out?" Slavin asked.

"When you become useful, I’ll let you out. If you’re bored, you can flip through the books on the table," Chen Ke said.

"I don’t understand Fei Huang... previously I even tried to use a translation app on my phone for that Dark Elf book..." Slavin said in pain.

"Then take this time to learn Fei Huang well," Chen Ke said.

After that, Chen Ke left his room and headed straight for Teacher Zhou’s house, having no interest in lingering with Slavin.

"Knock knock knock..." Chen Ke knocked on the door.

"Teacher Zhou... I need to make up lessons," he shouted while knocking.

Slavin poked his head out from the room, curiously watching Chen Ke.

"Uh... there’s someone else here?" Slavin asked curiously.

"Get inside," Chen Ke pointed at Slavin, who obediently closed the door.

"Teacher Zhou! Teacher Zhou! I know you’re in there! Open up, Teacher Zhou!" Chen Ke urged, his palm slapping loudly against the door.

Footsteps came from inside, and Teacher Zhou opened the door, his expression showing some displeasure.

"Teacher Zhou... I need to make up lessons," Chen Ke said like a student who had made a mistake, rubbing the back of his head.

"Um... Chen Ke, learning is something that should be done gradually, accumulated slowly, you can’t become fat with one big bite," Teacher Zhou frowned and said.

"I..." Chen Ke didn’t know what to say.

Teacher Zhou sighed and cocked his head, inviting Chen Ke into the room.

The two of them entered the small room for grading papers one after the other. Teacher Zhou pulled out a textbook from the drawer and handed it to Chen Ke.

Chen Ke took the textbook, thoughts swirling in his mind. Initially, his plan was just to look at Lucina and Diana’s future to predict the Administration Bureau’s robbery success rate, but now he suddenly wanted to see Xu Jing’s future...

Forget it! The robbery is what matters now. The ability to observe the future requires a long cooldown time, and opportunities were scarce; he mustn’t waste them.

The image of Lucina surfaced in Chen Ke’s mind, and he prepared to flip open the textbook when Teacher Zhou suddenly grabbed his wrist.

He looked at Teacher Zhou only to find him staring back seriously.

"Teacher Zhou?" Chen Ke asked in confusion.

"Chen Ke, don’t approach exams with the mindset of cramming at the last minute. If you toy with exams, the exams will punish you. Sometimes, whether an exam score is good or bad depends on your daily accumulation, not on looking up the answers at the last moment," Teacher Zhou said earnestly.

"Uh... I’ll remember that," Chen Ke nodded.

He opened the textbook, and the pages began to turn. The point of view resembled a city surveillance camera. He looked down upon the street where a gray-blue van was parked at the mouth of an alley. The figures of Lucina and Hall appeared in the camera’s eye, two janitors receiving a stack of bills from Lucina’s hands.

Then the scene shifted. The view was from a camera hidden under a table in an office, where a female janitor was cleaning up the trash, holding black garbage bags in each hand. Chen Ke recognized her as Lucina, now dressed in different clothes.

At that moment, a Caucasian man in a blue shirt stopped Lucina. They stood very close, apparently talking. Seconds passed, and Lucina set down the garbage bags, turning to face the wall and placing her hands against it as if she was being frisked by the man.

The man frisked Lucina, his hands moving up and down her body, sneaking inside her shirt, but Lucina did not resist. After a while, the man wrapped his waist around her and walked out of the camera’s range.

The scene ended there, the pages swiftly flipping before gradually coming to a stop. The two segments of the footage were short, just a dozen seconds or so, but Chen Ke had gotten the information he needed.

Lucina had indeed sorted out the vehicle issue and infiltrated the Administration Bureau office safely, but the sacrifice she was making seemed too great... Chen Ke had never thought of letting his own woman sacrifice her dignity to help him.

"Damn it! How can I tolerate this?" Chen Ke burst out in anger, a fierce light flashing in his eyes.

"Chen Ke, the answers aren’t set in stone, there are many ways to solve problems, but the score you get varies. You must weigh that yourself," Teacher Zhou said from the side.

Chen Ke pursed his lips and opened the textbook again, this time to see Diana’s future.

Diana would act with him, and by looking into her future, he could also get a glimpse of what the situation would be once the archives’ main door opened, as well as who they might face in the inevitable upcoming battle.

"Diana..." The image of Diana surfaced in Chen Ke’s mind, and the pages of the book began to flip rapidly again.

This time, the perspective became that of a bird... no... a flock of birds...

The flock flew over a forest. In the pale sky, the cold sun looked as if it had been pierced with a black hole. The rustling flight of the birds was suddenly interrupted by a burst of fierce flames from below. The violent fire surged into the sky, turning the surrounding forest into a sea of flames.

The flock scattered, the flames and high temperatures turning hundreds of birds to ash as they fell. The viewpoint switched from one unfortunate bird to another. Losing hundreds of birds, the remaining ones flew south, and Chen Ke’s view followed one unlucky bird as it plummeted to the ground.

All around were burning trees; the entire forest had turned into a sea of flames. The black moist soil was dried and cracked by the fire. If it had happened today, it would’ve certainly been a forest fire to astonish the world.

Then, he saw a man dressed like a European Medieval knight striding over the bodies of birds. He walked alone through the inferno, his body a translucent light green.

The scene ended there. Chen Ke came back to his senses, and the pages stopped turning. He touched the fine sweat on his forehead, not understanding what Diana’s future vision meant.
