Chapter 537: Chapter 537: The Life of a Cleaner

Lucina followed the grey-blue van around the street corner, and twelve minutes later, stopped at a red light at an intersection. Priskin, comparing the map, confirmed their route, they had limited chances, if they couldn’t successfully intercept the van on its return trip to the company, they might have to wait until next week.

Although Hall had considered sneaking over to the Manning Company at night to steal a vehicle, the difficulty was substantial—once a company lost a vehicle, it would soon be discovered.

However, hijacking a vehicle on the road was no easier. The plan to disguise themselves as janitors and infiltrate the Administration Bureau sounded reliable, but once they set about preparing for it, they found it fraught with challenges.

"They don’t seem to be planning on stopping; we can’t keep following them like this," Hall said. He flashed his Glock handgun and flicked off the safety.

"Don’t rush it, Hall. Shooting in the middle of the street isn’t the smartest of ideas," Lucina shifted gears, drawing a bit closer.

"Hijacking isn’t the smartest idea either; we should just steal a van," Priskin said.

"If we just steal a van, we won’t be able to get the uniforms and employee badges. Just driving won’t get us into the Administration Bureau," Lucina explained.

"You weren’t this thoughtful when we robbed Pihom," Hall laughed.

"And you weren’t this talkative when we robbed Old Pi," Lucina said.

"Look, look! They’re pulling over!" Priskin suddenly slapped the back of Hall’s seat.

The van slowly came to a stop at the side of the road, and a heavy-set janitor got out of the passenger side and walked toward the convenience store—perhaps to buy a pack of cigarettes.

Lucina parked the car six meters away and got out with Hall, heading straight for the van.

"Listen... I’ll take control of the driver from the passenger seat. Then you handle the guy in the store. If there’s anyone else in the car, Priskin will take care of them. We need to do this quick, take them to a secluded spot before we make a move," Hall’s hand was on the holster at his waist as he spoke.

"Leave it to me, Hall. Don’t intervene," Lucina shook her head.

Hall paused, wanting to say something, but they had already reached the side of the van.

"Hey, buddy," Lucina tapped on the window of the driver’s side.

"Hey... um, what do you want?" The janitor rolled down the window, and surprisingly, he was Latino, like Lucina, their accents very similar.

"I’ve got a proposition for you guys," Lucina leaned on the window smiling.

"Oh, what’s that? I’m just a janitor," the janitor chuckled.

"I need to borrow your car, your clothes, and your work badge, just for one day," Lucina said.

"That sounds like... a tough favor to do," the janitor sensed something off.

"Don’t worry, I don’t expect you to help for nothing. I’ll make it worth your while," Lucina said.

At that moment, the heavy-set janitor walked out of the convenience store, and Hall leaned against the car door, glaring at him.

"Get away from my van," the heavy-set janitor fumed.

"You’d better keep it down, our lady here is having a chat with your colleague," Hall gestured for silence and lifted his shirt hem just enough to reveal the color of his handgun.

"You guys are..." the heavy-set janitor fell silent.

"Looks like your friend’s back. I know janitors don’t make much—it’s clear. We need your van, clothes, work badges, and all the cleaning tools in the back. We’ll just borrow them for a day, and guarantee to return everything by evening," Lucina said.

"Hmm... I know I shouldn’t ask what you guys are planning, right? How much are you willing to pay?" the janitor asked.

"Five thousand union coins," Lucina said.

"That’s not a small sum, but if our company finds out..." the janitor hesitated.

"Per person," Lucina added.

The janitor hesitated for a moment, and after a fierce internal struggle, nodded his head.

"One day. Just one day," repeated the janitor.

"Exactly, just one day. The day after tomorrow morning, you still show up for work as usual, but at the corner of Holy Oak Avenue number 27, we’ll take over. Then, before you clock out at 5 p.m., you come here to pick up the truck..." said Lucina.

"No problem, but how will you pay?" asked the janitor.

"The day you give me the truck, that’s when I pay you. Once it’s used, I’ll give it back to you, and you can just consider that day a day off," Lucina said.

"Alright, ma’am... Just wondering... never mind, not knowing the name is just as well. How should I contact you?" asked the janitor.

"I’ll contact you. If you don’t show up that day, if you call the police, you know I’m not threatening you, I’m just telling you a possible future. You see, that gentleman will find your family and then let you know what losing everything means," Lucina said with a smile, glancing at Hall.

"I understand... ma’am, I’ll definitely come," said the janitor nervously.

"Good, you can go to work now. Don’t be nervous, these kinds of money-making opportunities don’t come every day," Lucina patted the janitor’s shoulder, then signaled Hall to walk back.

The chubby janitor got into the truck, looking at his companion, who seemed both excited and scared.

"What was that all about? Do you know them?" asked the chubby janitor.

"Damn, Gail, our chance to make some money has come. They’re going to give us 5,000 union coins to borrow our truck, uniforms, and work badges for one day. 5,000 union coins... split between two people, that’s 2,500 each," said the janitor.

"One day? 2,500 for one day? That’s more than the salary!" exclaimed the chubby janitor, thrilled.

"It’s just a bit frightening; don’t talk about this, you hear me?" the janitor said, staring intensely at his companion.

"Got it, got it... Are you sure it’s safe?" asked the chubby janitor.

"Trust me, Gail, everything is under my control. Just follow my lead the day after tomorrow, don’t say a word, let me deal with those people, and you just wait to divide the cash," said the janitor with confidence, gripping the steering wheel tightly. In his life that had always been without waves, finally, something thrilling had happened.

"Just like that, we’re going? What about the truck? I thought we were gonna get it today!" Hall said.

"We’ve got it," said Lucina.

"What if they don’t show up the day after tomorrow?" Hall asked.

"They’ll come," Lucina said.

"What if they call the police?" Hall asked again.

"They won’t," Lucina said.

"Are you so sure?" Hall was uneasy.

"Hall, I’ve seen that kind of greedy, cowardly look in their eyes. That guy will definitely come, and he’s bound to cheat his pal out of the share he’s due. My judgment is never wrong," Lucina smiled.

"Okay, we’ll wait and see then," Hall said.

The two of them got in the car, updating Priskin on the situation.

"If we do this, we won’t arouse Manning Company’s suspicion, and we’ll have everything we need. Now, the only problem is, we need to intercept them on the road when they’re on their way to the Administration Bureau, then drive this truck in their place to the Administration Bureau..." Priskin said.

"Indeed, but the problem has become simpler, hasn’t it? We just have to get there a bit faster than them, and we still have time to swap out the photos in the work badges. That’s much safer than snatching the truck on the street that day," Lucina said.

"Right, if this works, it’s really quite clever," Hall couldn’t help but agree.

"He’ll be pleased too, right?" Lucina looked at Priskin and Hall and asked.

"I don’t know, maybe... Maybe he thinks you should be able to do this?" Hall said with a shrug.

"Don’t talk like we’re doomed; let’s just complete our part and hope he’s worth all this fuss," Priskin said.
