Chapter 493: Contract Cancellation
Chapter 493: Chapter 493: Contract Cancellation
At 9 p.m., Li Moyang was in the manor at Opportunity City.
Lin Yaying leaned against the fireplace, holding a wine glass in her left hand, as the assassination operation was being carried out methodically.
However, one of the targets had counterattacked the assassin sent, which was not part of Lin Yaying’s plan. Although there was a mishap, it was not a big deal, for Lin Yaying had an infinite amount of time in this place.
One could evade temporarily, but not forever. Even if that target had luckily escaped now, Lin Yaying could simply pick another time point to send someone for the assassination again.
Nonetheless, reversing time arbitrarily could also disrupt the entire grand plan of the foundation, and interference with the timeline had to be handled with extreme care.
Lin Yaying was always carefully balancing her actions, prudently and cautiously deciding each event’s timing in the 2009 timeline as if knitting a sweater.
At the same time, she was avoiding having foundation agents personally intervene, instead, employing ordinary people from within this timeline.
Any action taken by those transcending time would have a long-term impact on the timeline itself. When irreconcilable paradoxes accumulate, the universe will autonomously merge or erase some events, and that is something beyond the foundation’s control.
Li Moyang was leaning back on the sofa, looking quite moody with a furrowed brow from the moment he entered, accompanied by a silent bald bodyguard.
"In about a month, we should be able to complete the takeover of the Lescott Consortium, and we should consider taking down Si’s consortium," Lin Yaying said.
"If nothing unexpected happens, that should be the case," Li Moyang replied slowly, his expression somewhat detached.
"There won’t be any surprises, Li Moyang, your success is a foregone conclusion," Lin Yaying laughed, placing her wine glass on the fireplace, pulling out her phone.
"I heard the assassination operation isn’t going smoothly?" Li Moyang asked.
"You don’t need to worry about that. Perhaps I should have asked Chen Ke to handle all the targets on the list from the start; those amateurs are too unreliable," Lin Yaying said as she swiped her phone’s screen, her expression gradually turning serious.
"Chen..." Li Moyang began to speak but then hesitated, picking up his wine glass and taking a sip.
At that moment, a blue flash of lightning streaked across the silent night sky, followed by rolling thunder that echoed as if something was being torn apart.
"Is it going to rain tonight?" Li Moyang looked out the window.
"Impossible..." Lin Yaying murmured to herself. Perhaps Li Moyang was unaware of the significance of the thunder, but she was very clear.
She realized something and swept her gaze around the room, noticing that the bald bodyguard was nowhere to be seen.
The flames in the fireplace flickered, and for a brief moment, Li Moyang’s shadow on the wall disappeared.
Lin Yaying looked back at her phone to find the date had changed from July to April.
"Where is your bodyguard?" Lin Yaying asked Li Moyang.
"I... What?" Li Moyang looked puzzled.
Lin Yaying sighed, whoever it was had done something to reverse the timeline of this world by over three months.
Li Moyang was not a person who transcended time; he was still in July just earlier when he was in the room, but now... he had switched to April.
Ordinary people wouldn’t notice after a timeline reversal, but Lin Yaying, someone who transcended time, could easily spot the hints.
For this situation, her first thought was the actions taken by hostile forces.
"Who else could it be? Isn’t the Cradle of Humanity project already nonexistent?" Lin Yaying mused to herself. The conflict between the Divine Descent Sect and the True Knowledge Sect had ended years ago, and the foundation had been renamed from "The Cradle of Humanity" to "Human Connection."
Besides them, who else would have the ability to traverse time and rewrite history? Lin Yaying realized the severity of the issue.
"What’s wrong? You seem troubled? You’ve never acted like this before," Li Moyang, holding his cup, looked at Lin Yaying, his expression back to normal.
"Was everything smooth this afternoon?" Lin Yaying asked.
"I..." Li Moyang glanced downward and then lifted his head.
"Very smoothly, no problems at all," he added.
"There are some things we need to do over, Li Moyang," Lin Yaying said, discerning that Li Moyang was hiding something, her tone imbued with deep significance.
Even though time had reverted to April, the leaders of Si’s Consortium and Lescott Spirit Production had not returned because Chen Ke was a man who transcended time. Thus, those he had killed would not be resurrected by the reversal of time.
But that was the complexity of the issue—who knew what the situation of these two corporations was now?
The universe had arranged everything, like patching up a novel full of bugs. However, what the story had become rewritten as, no one knew. This was also why both foundations were unwilling to directly interfere with history.
"Do we need to redo those things?" Li Moyang asked.
"The things you don’t know about, I can feel the changes, but don’t worry, it’s just a minor accident. I’ll leave for a while; you’d better find yourself a new bodyguard during this time," Lin Yaying said gravely. She turned and walked towards the door with a preoccupied expression.
At that moment, Chen Ke pushed the door open.
"Chen!" Lin Yaying startled upon seeing Chen Ke enter. She was unsure of Chen Ke’s stance at this time, so she didn’t know what to say.
Chen Ke closed the door and glanced at Li Moyang, then at Lin Yaying.
"Chen Ke, have you dealt with the Lescott side?" Lin Yaying asked.
"I was just about to tell you about that," Chen Ke said with a smile.
Li Moyang sat motionless on the sofa, his body tense. He didn’t know if the room would soon descend into chaos.
"What do you mean?" Lin Yaying asked.
"Our contract is canceled," Chen Ke said with a smile.
Lin Yaying sensed a dangerous aura in Chen Ke’s smile. Spiritual Energy surged within her, and although she didn’t know what Chen Ke was planning, she wanted to take the initiative.
Chen Ke was faster. He suddenly grabbed Lin Yaying by the collar, pulling her close, and drove his knee violently into her abdomen.
"Ow!"
Lin Yaying winced in pain, coughing dryly. It felt as if someone had hammered her pancreas viciously. Her right hand ignited a blue Flame, and she turned to retaliate against Chen Ke.
Chen Ke opened the door, threw Lin Yaying out, then shut it.
"Bang!"
The door closed heavily. Chen Ke patted his sleeves and straightened the creases on his suit. Li Moyang gripped the sofa handles tightly, still not letting his guard down.
"You do know it’s just a wooden door, right?" Seeing Chen Ke acting nonchalantly, Li Moyang reminded him.
"She’s not here now," Chen Ke said.
"Then where is she?" Li Moyang anxiously asked, looking at the door.
Lin Yaying crashed against a wall and immediately adjusted her posture. When she looked up, instead of the mansion’s scenery, she found herself in a foreign hallway.
"What? Is this... an Illusion Technique?" Lin Yaying wondered, surveying her surroundings. She found herself at the staircase entrance of a decrepit apartment building. An open corridor outside led to a moderately sized clearing, surrounded by rolling dark green clouds.
Lin Yaying tried to open the door, but unsurprisingly, it was locked. She scoffed and punched the door.
"Ouch!"
Lin Yaying cried out in pain, the Magic Power from her fist gone. She stared in disbelief at her hands and tried to gather Spiritual Energy again.
"Something’s wrong... this isn’t right..."
After several attempts, Lin Yaying realized she couldn’t use her Spiritual Energy here at all, the sensation of being merely human again was dreadful.
"Chen Ke?! Chen Ke! Where are you?!" Lin Yaying shouted all around, her voice disappearing without even an echo.
She kicked forcefully at several apartment doors, testing each to see if she could force them open, but to no avail.
Rushing downstairs, Lin Yaying followed a dirt path to a circular clearing. As far as she could see, the place was just that big, and looking along another path led merely to a cliff a few hundred meters away.
Lin Yaying realized she had been locked in a strange place by Chen Ke. For the first time since coming to 2009, she felt nervous and uneasy.
