Chapter 472: Chapter 472 Lurking Dangers
Diana picked up the phone, wiped the screen, and dialed Aileen Wang’s number, but the other party did not answer.
"Pick up the phone..." Diana sat amidst three corpses, growing anxious.
Beep... Beep... Beep...
Finally, Aileen answered.
"Oh, Diana? I thought you’d fallen asleep," her voice sounded half-asleep.
"Aileen... have you been followed by strangers recently? Has anyone unfamiliar approached you?" Diana hurriedly asked.
"Of course not... why do you suddenly ask?" Aileen countered.
"You’re in danger, someone wants to kill you... I’m coming to Norton City to find you tonight," Diana said.
"Little Na... you’re scaring me, did you see something?" Aileen’s tone turned serious.
"I..." Diana thought for a moment, not wanting to worry Aileen, so she held back from telling her about her current situation.
"What did you want to talk about when you called just now?" Diana changed the subject.
"I wanted to ask you... have you had any nosebleeds recently?" It seemed like Aileen was hinting at something.
Diana wiped the blood off her face and said, "No."
"How long have you known Chen Ke?" Aileen asked again.
"Not very long, Aileen... what are you getting at?" Diana asked.
"I’ve been thinking about this recently... Chen Ke might be the key to human beings decoding time travel. I had a nosebleed, and then I saw the future... Diana, I had already seen him in a vision once before you introduced Chen Ke to me. I suspect that anyone who has come into contact with Chen Ke can travel through time," Aileen explained.
"Listen Aileen, we can talk about this stuff later. For now, lock your house doors and windows, and don’t open them for anyone until I get there, okay?" Diana said.
"You sound a bit frantic... Diana, what’s happening over there? It’s almost the middle of the night," Aileen inquired.
"Just do as I say... I’ve got to go, go check your doors and windows... now!" Diana urged.
After somewhat forcing Aileen to act according to her instructions, Diana hurriedly dialed Chen Ke’s number.
"The user you are calling is out of the service area."
"Damn it! Chen Ke! Damn it! The phone is useless with you!" Diana cursed, raising the phone high to smash it to the ground, but after a second thought, she retracted her hand and, after pondering for a moment, dialed the number of CPA Director Steve Rogers.
Beep... Beep... Beep... Beep...
Beep... Beep... Beep...
"Answer the phone, Steve..." Diana was in a foul mood.
"Hey... my God, are you serious? Diana? What time is it now?" Finally, Steve’s voice came through, evidently just woken up.
"Sorry to wake you at this hour, Steve," Diana said.
"It’s okay... if it’s you, it’s okay, what’s the matter? You sound panicky," Steve said.
"I was attacked by three assassins, in my house, and they have a long-planned assassination list, I have it here," Diana revealed.
"Wait, wait, wait... what are you talking about?" Steve sat up in bed, his expression turning grave.
"Somebody wants to kill me! Steve, I almost died, they even had Spirit Power Sealing Hand Grenades!" Diana told him.
"You said they have a list? What kind of list?" Steve asked.
"Some... some assassination list, with names arranged by month... I don’t know, I think the Administration Bureau should look into it," Diana said.
"The assassins? Are they dead? No survivors?" Steve asked.
"Yeah, I finished them off, they said a woman was planning these attacks, I think if we could have someone monitor the victims on the list, we could track down more clues."
"How comes it’s you... Diana... why is it you?" Steve seemingly muttered to himself.
"Steve, are you there?" Diana asked.
"Are you alright? I’m coming right over, don’t leave," Steve said.
"I’m fine, but I’ve got urgent matters to attend to first, I’ll leave the bodies and the list for you to handle, I have to hang up now," Diana said.
"Don’t do anything foolish, Diana," Steve said.
Diana ended the call, steadied the table, then placed the list on top of it.
She went to the restroom, turned on the tap, washed the blood off her face, applied a bandage, and stared at herself in the mirror, her mind full of question marks.
She tried calling Chen Ke again, the line was still out of service.
Before, Chen Ke had called to warn her that someone would come to kill her, could Chen Ke be one of that woman’s assassins? Or as Wang Ailin said, could Chen Ke time travel and see the future?
Now, the most pressing matter was to protect Wang Ailin.
Diana put on her jacket and jeans, stuffed her credentials and belongings into a khaki backpack, strapped on a gun holster, and inserted two rhino revolvers – one for monsters, one for people.
She took a blue Holy Diamond from the drawer, focused her spirit energy, channeling the spiritual energy into the tiny diamond, and with a whoosh, a Longsword materialized.
"Let’s try this again," Diana said.
She donned a black peaked cap and sunglasses, left the bodies in her home for her colleagues at the Administration Bureau to handle, and went straight to the Opportunity City airport overnight.
From Opportunity City to Norton City, it’s a night by boat, a whole day by long-distance bus, but only 1 hour by plane.
When Steve arrived at Diana’s home with six Administration Bureau agents and a host of County Police, she had already left; the bodies on the floor were already stiff, and thick red blood had trailed all the way to the door.
Forensic investigators and the County Police sealed off Diana’s residence, everyone in the building peeked out curiously from their doors.
Several agents went to other floors to gather information from residents, while Steve stood at the table, examining the list Diana had left behind.
"This is their stuff, there are corpse dissolvers and body bags, and spent Spirit Power Sealing Hand Grenades, seems like they came prepared and knew Diana’s identity very well," the forensic expert reported to Steve.
"Knowing she’s a Spiritual Ability User, they should know she’s from the Administration Bureau, it looks like our adversary is not very afraid of retaliation from the Administration Bureau. Nor do they seem to care much about the United Federation’s laws," Steve said.
"We asked some civilians, they heard gunfire and scuffling noises in the room," an agent who had finished gathering news came into the room and told Steve.
"Understood, three people came, and they chose the time just before dawn to strike, probably aiming for a quick resolution," Steve shook his head.
"What about the people on the list?" the agent asked.
"Monitor them, but don’t spook them. If there’s a new assassination attempt, notify me immediately," Steve instructed.
"Understood," the agent nodded.
At 1:20 a.m., in Norton City...
Wang Ailin was sound asleep, the lock on the door slowly turned, making a clicking noise, and the door, which had been closed, was gently pushed open...
