Chapter 466: Stop

Chapter 466: Chapter 466: Stop

Chen Ke and Hainerd entered the house together and sat down at the small table to drink.

The cheap, green-bottled beer tasted dry and left no impression after going down the throat.

This kind of beer was a local brand from Opportunity City. Hainerd said it tasted like the sea waves. Perhaps when he was smuggling out at sea, he often drank this brand.

The basement underneath the fish factory was actually the mailman’s second safe house, but after Lucina got injured, she had been living there alone.

In the blink of an eye, more than three months had passed since they robbed Pulito Bank.

However, the entire world had undergone drastic changes in Chen Ke’s eyes.

Under the hanging punching bag, there was a stack of bandages dotted with blood. Boxes of pistol ammunition were crammed under the bed, and several AR15 automatic rifles leaned against the wall.

On the table lay two shotguns and four pistols haphazardly, and a few size 12 deer bullets had not yet been loaded into the magazine.

The things Lucina saw in her hallucinations kept her on edge, constantly ready for battle. People who would surpass time bled from their noses, vomited, and then saw the future events they would experience.

Wang Ailin and Lucina, in an unpredictable future, would travel through time. Just like him.

"You guys seem to have rarely gone out, Chen Ke. Are you putting my daughter on play? Relationships need nurturing and maintenance. I can tell that Lucina is tolerating you, but everyone’s patience has a limit. After tolerance reaches it, there’ll be an explosion, and then... you know," Hainerd rattled on.

"I... um, you’re right," Chen Ke scratched the back of his head. He and Lucina had established a relationship, but indeed, he had not spent much time with her.

"I hope you can be somewhat honest with me. I’m not interested in why you have Spiritual Power; everyone has their own destiny. But you always appear suddenly and then leave just as quickly. What exactly are you busy with?" Hainerd was truly concerned about Chen Ke’s condition.

"I won’t let down her choice," Chen Ke promised.

"I’ve met many people: liars, opportunists, villains, assassins... A person’s eyes can betray their character, but I have never been able to see through you. Let me be frank, sometimes, I think you are two people, switching as the situation demands... hey... you lie like a child, but you also make choices that earn my respect. Maybe it’s a twin thing," Hainerd joked, tilting his head back and gulping down the beer.

"You’re not entirely wrong. Sometimes I feel pretty split myself. Speaking of which... Pihom and the others, what are they busy with now?" Chen Ke asked. He had intended to discuss the Holy Diamond again, but considering he had just talked about it with Hainerd at this point in time, it seemed pointless to bring it up again.

"Hall and Priskin are getting impatient. We’ve been quiet for months, and he’s become rather paranoid, especially about the Pulito Bank incident. The mailmen are just a group that robs illegal goods; we shouldn’t have gotten involved in the grudge between Yasla and the conglomerates," Hainerd said.

Chen Ke nodded. From the current perspective, that robbery did not seem necessary for the mailmen at all.

"Pihom and I are too old... too old to have the time to rebuild another family... but Lucina still has time. She could choose a better path, and so could you. Are you still doing the job of killing for money?" Hainerd asked.

"Not anymore," Chen Ke said.

If the countdown no longer meant a threat to life, the Symbiotic Stone promised by Lin Yaying would become meaningless to Chen Ke.

"You should find a way to get away from that job. And I’ve heard it’s not easy for those deep in it to get out. I certainly don’t want to one day open the door to find both of you lying dead on the floor," Hainerd said.

"Trust me, I won’t let that happen. Anyone who wants to harm her will face the flames of An Helei," Chen Ke said.

"Hmm... although I have no idea what that thing is, I get your point. By the way... I’ve been meaning to ask... what are those two red vials?" Hainerd looked at the two glass bottles sitting on the cabinet nearby.

Those were the blood vials Chen Ke had brought back from the year 1859; he himself didn’t know whose blood it was, only that pouring it on a weapon would temporarily give it the power to slay Spiritual Monsters.

Maybe he shouldn’t have brought those things back...

"That’s for cleaning toilets," Chen Ke said.

Hainerd looked into Chen Ke’s eyes, stood up, and said, "Just don’t blow this place up, okay? Are you going out this afternoon? Or, should I say, are you waiting here alone for her to come back?"

"I’ll be staying here tonight," Chen Ke said.

Hainerd nodded, turned, and left the safe house.

The room quieted down, the small clock on the cabinet ticking away. Chen Ke took out his newly bought BlackBerry Bold 9000 from his pocket and flipped through the contact list.

Diana and Wang Ailin were still on Lin Yaying’s assassination list, and assassins could take action against them at any time.

However, considering that one of the girls was a key asset to the nation’s research into Spiritual Energy and the other was an agent of the Administration Bureau, just giving them a proper warning should make it not so easy to target them.

At present, Chen Ke’s top priority was to figure out what would happen when this countdown reached zero.

Since Lin Yan had suggested as much, it indicated that the end of the countdown would not bring about dire consequences. Chen Ke took off his coat, threw it on the bed, and lay down, feeling a sense of relaxation and comfort for the first time.

"Time is your currency; use it well," Lin Yan had said.

"Then let’s see what happens when it hits zero," Chen Ke muttered to himself. Now, there were about 16 hours left on the countdown. Even though suicide could instantly consume 30%, Chen Ke obviously wouldn’t do that.

He lay there passing the time, his mind aimlessly pondering the ultimate questions of the universe, life, and time.

After only about 30 minutes, Chen Ke felt unbearably idle. He had been on the move like a mad dog all this time and had never stopped; suddenly being idle made him feel uncomfortable.

"Oh, that’s right... the countdown also drains life when healing wounds," he sat up, picked up a pistol from the table, removed the magazine, pulled back the slide, then reinserted the magazine and chambered a round.

"Hmm... shooting myself in the leg should consume some life..." Chen Ke talked to himself. Not wanting to put a hole in his clothes, he took off his pants, exposing his thigh.

Just then, Lucina pushed open the door, carrying a large bag of food. She was dressed in a black tank top, deep blue jeans, with a jacket tied around her waist, and her dark brown ponytail swung behind her.

As soon as Lucina closed the door, she saw Chen Ke sitting on the bed, holding the pistol and ready to shoot himself without pants on.

Her whole body trembled, she dropped the food in her hands, and yelled out, "Stop!" as she rushed toward Chen Ke.
