Chapter 443: The Truth Behind Lies

Chapter 443: Chapter 443: The Truth Behind Lies

As the scenes around him began to vanish, Chen Ke’s vision also blurred. He closed his eyes, and upon reopening them, he found himself squatting on the wooden floor.

He gasped for breath, looking around warily, and noticed that Baron Mox, who had changed clothes, was staring at the bed in surprise, while Maria had just sheathed her saber.

Chen Ke supported himself on the bed and stood up, only to see that Lady Katherine, lying on the bed, had her abdomen blown open, her blood and guts splattered across the sheets.

"Fuck... dead?" Chen Ke looked at Maria with an incredulous expression akin to a dumbfounded husky.

Maria sighed softly, and Baron Mox was a mixture of grief and rage.

"You... what have you done? Did you kill my wife?" Mox walked over and grabbed the collar of Chen Ke’s clothing.

In reality, Mox couldn’t touch the Holy Relics; the collar he was grabbing was that of Chen Ke’s ordinary attire, which is to say, had he summoned the Holy Relics naked, there would have been no collar to grab.

"Mr. Mox, please be calm! I did what I had to do," said Chen Ke.

"Why did you have to kill her? Huh?!" Mox said, his grief turning to fury.

"You seem to have forgotten how you came back," Chen Ke replied calmly.

Baron Mox looked into Chen Ke’s eyes, his rage slowly subsiding, giving way to sorrow.

"Oh... my Katherine..." He let go of Chen Ke and knelt by the bed, murmuring softly.

"I’m afraid he’s right, Baron Mox. He did what he could, but Lady Katherine received too much blood..." Maria spoke indifferently.

"I’m sorry, sir... It was because you killed me there that I could return to reality... I was too agitated earlier," Mox sighed.

"Your wife had a really nice figure," Chen Ke thought secretly.

Then he said to Mox, "Condolences for your loss."

He walked over to Katherine, gently removed the necklace from around her neck, and took back the five Holy Diamonds, which were of no lifetime use to Chen Ke.

After returning to Opportunity City, Chen Ke was determined to find Pihom and figure out a way to sell them.

"Our work here is done, Mr. Mox. As for everything you’ve experienced, and the tragedy that befell Lady Katherine, we hope you’ll keep it to yourself," Maria said.

"What? After all that’s happened, you expect me to keep silent? I’m going to practice with the head of the security station tomorrow, and then go find William with them!" Baron Mox looked at Maria, both perplexed and angry.

"We’ll handle the matter. You just need to stay at home and keep quiet about everything," Maria shook her head and said.

"Impossible! William killed my Katherine! I must—!"

Mox’s words were cut off as his head flew out like a soccer ball, striking a nearby wardrobe with a thud, and then rolled on the floor a few times, stopping at Chen Ke’s feet.

"Um... did you slip or was that intentional?" Chen Ke asked Maria as she flicked the blood off her blade onto the floor and sheathed it slowly.

"The duty of a Secret Keeper is to guard secrets, not protect the public," Maria looked at Chen Ke.

"It doesn’t matter to me, I’m leaving. You won’t stop me, will you?" Chen Ke asked.

"Have you forgotten something, Mr. Ludwig?" Maria stared at Chen Ke, her pupils like two glowing lamps.

Chen Ke was silent for two seconds, then remembered Maria’s previous request. She wanted to know the last words Florence left behind.

"What did he say, Mr. Ludwig? Can you tell me now?" Maria asked, softly caressing the handle of her saber with her fingers, her thumb on top and the other four trailing below, sliding from bottom to top and back down again.

"Of course, Ms. Maria," Chen Ke nodded, smiling.

Think fast! Think fast! Think fast! Think fast! Think fast!

"His intention couldn’t have been clearer," said Chen Ke with a faint smile.

Maria listened quietly, her expression extremely serious.

Make one up! Make one up! Make one up! Make one up! Make one up!

"Even an outsider like me..." Chen Ke’s lips curved slightly upward as he crossed his arms and shook his head.

Maria’s mouth opened slightly, as if she were about to stick her tongue out, a blush creeping over her frosty cheeks.

Think fast! Think fast! Think fast! Think fast! Think fast!

"He said..." Chen Ke

Maria watched Chen Ke, breathing rapidly, her body trembling slightly, and she unconsciously turned her feet inward.

"Please let Maria forget me," Chen Ke said.

As soon as he finished speaking, Chen Ke stared at Maria, his muscles tensed, his right hand ready.

Maria fell silent for a moment, her face betraying no emotion, but Chen Ke still saw the look of disappointment in her posture and small movements. Her right hand, which had been resting on the hilt of her military saber, seemed to grip it tighter as if to mask her feelings.

"Lady Maria?" Chen Ke asked tentatively.

"I understand... Mr. Ludwig, you may leave. The Secret Keeper will handle this," Maria said, shaking her head and looking out the window.

Chen Ke bowed slightly, stepping over Baron Mox’s head, and retreated through the door behind him.

"Are you leaving? What about Baron Mox?" A security officer outside saw Chen Ke coming out and hurriedly asked.

"Don’t go in," Chen Ke said mysteriously, speaking softly.

The security officer nodded, not saying anything else, letting Chen Ke leave. Considering how cooperative the security officer was, he must be one of the few high-ranking officials aware of the existence of the Secret Keeper Organization.

But none of this concerned Chen Ke; unfortunately, he hadn’t found all of the Holy Diamonds, but at least it was a good start...

Across the street in an alley, Chen Ke found Jacob, who was back in his usual attire, pocketing ten Holy Diamonds, and weighing them in his hand, they were still quite heavy.

"You were in there for a long time... I thought you died in there..." Jacob sat on the steps of a corner, fiddling with his revolver.

"There was a complication, Jacob, but I handled it," Chen Ke said.

"Did you find what you were looking for?" Jacob asked.

"Unfortunately, I only found a part... Baron Mox gave the rest to someone named Edward," Chen Ke said.

"Edward... given Baron Mox’s status, he could potentially know four Edwards... Did you ask him?" Jacob asked again.

"I wanted to ask... but there was a problem, he’s dead," Chen Ke shook his head.

Maria had acted too swiftly, without warning; he had really mistaken the Secret Keeper for an organization like the Administration Bureau, which seemed not to care about the casualties of the common people and would even kill to keep secrets.

"I think I get what you mean... but I wouldn’t recommend causing more trouble tonight, Chen Ke. After 2 a.m., even the curfew patrols will withdraw, and the entire city will be locked up tight," Jacob said, pulling out a pocket watch to check the time.

Chen Ke looked at Jacob, not understanding the significance of after 2 a.m.

"After 2 a.m. until dawn is the time for the Hunters, we should not disturb them," Jacob said.

He stood up, patted Chen Ke, and signaled for him to follow.

"Where are we going?" Chen Ke asked.

"You must not have a place to stay, I’ll take you somewhere safe to sleep for the night," Jacob said.
