Chapter 431 Mutated Space
Chapter 431: Chapter 431 Mutated Space
When Chen Ke and Jacob left Sean’s estate, the guards in the courtyard still hadn’t woken up.
The two of them weaved through the shadows of the buildings, stealthily moving through the blind spots where the gas lamps could not reach, and quickly hid in a pitch-black alley.
"Baron Mox, Lady Katherine, who are they?" Chen Ke asked.
"Mox is the best doctor in Langdon, seeing him for treatment costs a fortune, but his excellent medical skills obviously couldn’t cure his own wife," Jacob said.
"You mean to say, Lady Katherine has passed away?" Chen Ke wondered. If this woman had died, Sean’s earlier words carried some significance.
"No, no... she hasn’t, Lady Katherine has a kind of neurological illness, Baron Mox tried many methods but couldn’t cure her, and Lady Katherine hasn’t left the house in years," Jacob said.
Neurological illness was still a very difficult condition to treat in modern times, much like a terminal illness in the 19th century.
However, not all neurological diseases are fatal, and for rich people who don’t need to do heavy physical work, it wouldn’t necessarily disrupt their lives.
"Take me to their estate," Chen Ke urged.
"Chen Ke, wait a moment... don’t be hasty, you can’t threaten them the way you did just now," Jacob spread his hands, making a waiting gesture.
"He has my things, I don’t care who he is," Chen Ke said.
"Sean controls Langdon, but he’s just an entrepreneur. But Baron Mox... he’s the best doctor in the city, he’s even treated the Queen..." Jacob said.
Chen Ke stroked his chin, pacing back and forth, he understood Jacob’s point.
Sean was a shadow ruler in the underbelly of Langdon, offending him would lead to some retaliation, but Baron Mox was a public figure aboveboard in Langdon, taking action against him meant having to answer to Langdon society.
Jacob knew Chen Ke wouldn’t change his mind, he didn’t want to stop Chen Ke but was very worried that Chen Ke would act too rashly, making many things impossible to settle.
After all, dealing with street thugs and assassins’ sneak attacks was one thing, being wanted was another, Chen Ke was helping Xu Jing to have a clean and normal citizen’s status.
Humans are social creatures, without society, one either has the power to create a new world, or else the outcome would be quite miserable.
"I understand, I’ll be careful," Chen Ke nodded.
"I hope so, but East Langdon is a bit far, if we go on foot, it might take us almost all night..." Jacob said.
"I have a way," Chen Ke replied and turned to walk out of the alley. Jacob followed Chen Ke, somewhat skeptically.
After a while, the two of them drove a carriage along the midnight streets toward East Langdon, Chen Ke had stolen a factory carriage using his time-stopping ability.
The carriage seemed to belong to a brewery, pulled by two horses, a green four-wheeled cart that judging by the size of the trailer behind it, could carry about eight large casks of liquor.
He let Jacob handle the horses while he sat on the passenger seat, if there was still time before dawn, Chen Ke planned to return the carriage.
After driving the carriage for a while, Jacob carefully navigated a path avoiding the patrols of the constables. Fortunately, patrols were scarce in Langdon, and about two hours later, they could see the red roof of Baron Mox’s imposing estate.
The faint sound of the Big Ben chimes came from afar, the two hid the carriage in an alley near the park, then walked toward the red-roofed estate.
Baron Mox’s estate was a very imposing two-story villa, not particularly large, with its own yard, quite a contrast to the crowded five-story tenements for workers in the surrounding area.
The guards at the entrance of the estate were dressed in blue uniforms of public security officers, and Jacob’s worries were not without reason; Mox was not a member of the royal family, but he had obtained a title and was counted among the nobility thanks to his medical skills.
Chen Ke had planned to freeze the guards at the door with his time-stopping ability, but at the same time, a black carriage rushed over from the other end of the street and stopped at the entrance of Mox’s residence.
Chen Ke and Jacob quickly darted to hide in a dark corner nearby and observed the newcomers.
The black carriage, pulled by two horses, had three people disembarking from its black carriage box. They wore trench coats and triangular hats, and in their right hands, they carried black bags.
Chen Ke, with his sharp eyes, immediately realized that the black bags were actually cold weapons wrapped in cloth.
Once the three men got off, the coachman tugged at the reins and drove the carriage away. The three men, conversing with the public security officers, seemed not to be constrained by the curfew.
"Who are they? Are they also here to see Baron Mox?" Chen Ke asked Jacob.
"I don’t know. They’re certainly far beyond the status of a public security station..." Jacob shook his head.
Chen Ke saw the guards at the door bow respectfully to the three men, then stepped aside and let them swagger into the estate.
"Could they also be in the medical field? No, that’s not right; I seem to have seen..." Chen Ke muttered to himself, recalling that very morning, when he was wearing his Florence suit, he seemed to have been watched by these sort of people...
Now that he thought about it, his Florence suit looking quite similar to their outfits... only perhaps even more upscale.
"They might well be Secret Keepers..." Chen Ke didn’t say it out loud but had already made his judgment.
Secret Keepers operated directly under the commands of the Queen and were a special organization formed in the 19th century Ingra to combat mysterious entities; they hunted every night.
In other words, where they appeared, there would be mysterious occurrences.
"Jacob, there might be something in Baron Mox’s estate that you can’t comprehend; I advise you to stay here and watch the carriages," Chen Ke warned.
"Is it like the things underneath the academy?" Jacob had seen those things before, and upon hearing Chen Ke’s words, he instantly understood his implication.
"It should be, I’m not sure, but do you know about Secret Keepers?" Chen Ke asked.
"Hmm, I don’t know. What’s that?" Jacob shook his head.
Chen Ke turned his attention back to the estate. Since Secret Keepers was a secret organization, it was normal for a commoner like Jacob not to know of them; however, even so, the personnel at the public security station should have a basic understanding of Secret Keepers, as cross-departmental cooperation was sometimes required.
The guard at the door rubbed his hands together, cursing the cold air of the evening. He saw the gas lamp flicker unnaturally and moved closer to adjust the gas valve.
Meanwhile, Chen Ke had already crossed him and entered the small courtyard of the residence,
The manor didn’t look that big, just a two-story villa. Chen Ke moved to the edge of the door and gently pushed it open; in front of him was a long wooden corridor.
The length of the corridor was clearly well over 200 meters, an obvious defiance of logic since, from the outside, the width and length of a single level of Mox’s residence were nowhere near 200 meters.
The three suspected Secret Keepers who had just entered were nowhere to be seen, and Chen Ke, standing at the entrance, heard no sound.
As soon as he stepped onto the wooden floor, he felt as though the floor was like an escalator in a shopping mall, abruptly moving him inside; the wooden door behind him also slammed shut with a bang.
Chen Ke turned to look back; the windows in the wooden door were pitch black, with no sight of the outside. He drew his Type 67 pistol and looked towards the end of the corridor.
At that moment, a line of small text floated into view at the corner of his eye: "Entered mutated space."
