Chapter 369: Chapter 369 Diana, Completely New and Different
Opportunity City Spiritual Ability Administration, 3 p.m.
The white tank top was soaked with sweat, and the inside of the face guard was sticking to her face, making Diana somewhat uncomfortable.
She had cut her long hair short, leaving a tomboyish hairstyle. Without the annoying long hair, everything in front of her seemed to become much clearer.
She protected her chest with her hands and tensed all the muscles in her body, her eyes staring through the edges of her boxing gloves at Steve Rogers three steps away.
Diana feinted a step toward Steve, faking a couple of times, then a hint of fear rose in her heart, and she retracted her steps.
She sized Steve up and down, trying to find any weaknesses in his posture, but strange thoughts kept popping into her mind.
Steve was solid, his arms were thick. That left cross he had thrown earlier was not to be taken lightly; if it weren’t for the headgear, Diana might have lost a tooth.
Diana bit down on her mouthguard, keeping herself focused and alert. She didn’t want to admit that her previous thoughts were born from fear.
She took a step forward, leaning her body to the left, making a feint with a left hook. Steve lowered his body as if he was about to dodge.
Diana’s expression remained unchanged. She planted her advancing left foot firmly, and her right fist shot out like a viper towards Steve’s cheek.
Steve had already seen through the punch.
Before Diana’s fist could even reach Steve, she realized this.
Damn... I should have anticipated this... Diana cursed to herself.
Steve’s upper body swayed, and his right uppercut struck Diana’s left upper abdomen.
Diana’s abdomen caved in, a chill ran through her body as if her soul had been punched out of her, a dull pain circled her head, the contents of her stomach surged up, and her mouth was instantly filled with liquid, causing her feet to lift involuntarily.
She staggered backward several steps, swallowing what was in her mouth forcibly, and only then did the pain in her abdomen explode.
Diana bent over, squinting with one eye, enduring the agonizing pain.
I can’t let him hit me again... she thought, rubbing her abdomen and taking a deep breath to regain her stance.
"You’ve slowed down, Diana, is that it?" Steve said.
"It’s not over," Diana replied.
With a resigned huh, Steve repositioned himself into a fighting stance.
Diana charged towards Steve with a quick step, her eyes blazing with fury. Biting down on her mouthguard, she threw fast and furious punches at Steve’s cheek.
Steve covered his face, retreating continuously, as Diana pressed him into the corner of the ring.
She felt she had taken the initiative, constantly shifting her body, her left and right fists incessantly jabbing at Steve – now was the time, now was the time! Diana pulled back her left arm and aimed a beautiful uppercut at Steve’s chin.
Her fist brushed the air in front of Steve and swung through empty space, Diana looked at Steve in surprise, and in that brief second, her guard was down.
Steve just leaned back a bit, dodging Diana’s hook, and then, repeating his technique, he answered Diana’s alarm with another hook.
"Bang..."
Diana was struck squarely in the midsection, her feet briefly leaving the ground, her insides as if pierced by a sharp iron spike causing her limbs to go cold, a wave of the urge to urinate surging up, she closed her eyes, her teeth as if trembling in her mouth.
She stepped back twice, clutching her belly and bending over, but she still couldn’t ease the discomfort in her abdomen. The mouthguard mixed with saliva was spat onto the ring, and finally, she knelt on both knees, her head resting on the ring floor, emitting unwilling low groans of "Mmm... Mmm... Mmm..."
Steve walked over to the side and supported her shoulders, waiting for Diana to recover.
"You know, I wasn’t using my full strength," Steve said.
"Are you... trying to provoke me... fuck off..." Diana cursed, grabbing the rope beside her to stand up and wiping the saliva from her mouth with her boxing gloves.
"Still angry about that thing?" Steve supported Diana, but she pushed him away.
"I don’t know... Steve, those days weren’t easy for me, I didn’t know the Administration Bureau had such agreements..." Diana shook her head.
The cruelty of a Level 2 Interrogation Protocol could only be understood by those who had been through it.
"It’s not easy for anyone, but at least, the chairman has changed his opinion of you..." Steve consoled her.
"Fuck the chairman, fuck him! I suspect I’m the only agent throughout the Administration Bureau who has ever been ’served’ by an interrogation protocol," Diana raged.
"What you went through involves high-level secrets... You have to understand the actions of the Administration Bureau..." Steve said.
"You know the feeling, Steve, it’s distrust, a shameful betrayal! And all of it stems from the Bureau’s fear of the unknown," Diana said.
"The Administration Bureau is also trying... to make amends to you to the greatest extent possible... You’re now a Level 9 agent, you should know, in the Opportunity City Administration Bureau CPA and FPI departments combined, there are less than 20 agents with Level 9 clearance. And you don’t have to do fieldwork anymore, the chairman is preparing to put you in charge of the Great Void exploration department," Steve said.
"I don’t care about that... I always thought I was fighting for a goal alongside a group of people. But now, I find they don’t trust me," Diana said.
"Believe me, Diana, we are still fighting for the same goal... Keeping those things out, protecting the citizens’ awareness, letting them live in the familiarity of their everyday lives. I have never doubted you, Diana," Steve said.
"Where were you when I was imprisoned, Steve?" Diana asked.
"The director didn’t allow me to get involved in your case, and at the time, I was dealing with a very important matter," Steve explained.
"Who was that woman?" Diana asked.
"Which one?" Steve was taken aback.
"That time I was sitting there, she pressed on my shoulder, and with those four knuckles of hers, made me vomit a lot. You know who I’m talking about, and I know you all saw it through the surveillance. Plus, I know it was because of her that I was put under house arrest!" Diana exclaimed angrily.
"I really didn’t know... Diana, I didn’t watch it," Steve said.
"That Asian bitch... I will find her, I definitely will," Diana said coldly.
"No matter what you say, I’m on your side... That’s enough for today, try to cheer up," Steve sighed, stepped over the ropes, and climbed out of the ring.
Diana leaned against the ropes, biting the laces of her boxing gloves with her teeth, trying to pull them off.
"By the way, Diana... you’ve lost a lot of weight," Steve said before stepping out the door, looking back.
"You’re not my dad," Diana replied.
Steve walked out the door and gently closed it.
Diana tossed one of her boxing gloves onto the ring and saw the mouthguard and saliva she had spat out.
She lifted her tank top and looked at her abdomen. Flat and fair, slightly swollen with four fearsome scars partially visible, the six-pack abs had vanished, and she was leaner than before she entered the 2006 timeline.
She threw the other glove onto the floor, rolled out of the ring, changed her clothes, and drove off towards the gym.
