Chapter 350: Give Me the Answer
Chapter 350: Chapter 350: Give Me the Answer
"Professor... Professor?" Wang Ailin shook Mansis’s body, tears flowing uncontrollably.
"He’s dead, Wang Ailin," Chen Ke advised.
Mansis was Wang Ailin’s mentor, who had taught her all he knew. Now, Mansis’s inexplicable death in front of Wang Ailin was something she couldn’t accept.
"How could he just... be dead...?" Wang Ailin muttered blankly.
"This is... fate," Chen Ke paused, not knowing what else to say.
At that moment, a gust of ash blew by, and Parker appeared behind Chen Ke. He glanced at Professor Mansis and murmured, "May the Holy Father bless..."
"Now is not the time for silence, everyone. Corridor 1 is the only way out for us, right?" Chen Ke looked at the two.
Parker nodded, while Wang Ailin clutched Mansis’s hand and sobbed softly.
"Besides the containment item you mentioned, there’s also a person down there... He might stop us, or he might not," Chen Ke said.
"Wuwuwu... Chen Ke, help me kill him, that Corrigan guy... He killed the professor," Wang Ailin lifted her head and looked at Chen Ke.
"There are already three of us who want him dead... This is exactly what I was going to say. You stay up here while Parker and I go down to check things out," Chen Ke told Wang Ailin.
"Wait... I don’t have a weapon, Chen Ke," Parker shook his head.
"You are the weapon," Chen Ke said as he stood up, tucked his gun into its holster, and summoned the Fire-igniting Broadsword.
"What do you mean?" Parker asked, puzzled.
"You’re now a Transcendent... Try and see if you can use this sword," Chen Ke said, holding the hilt out to Parker.
"Mmm... I’ll try." Parker looked at the sword, tentatively reaching out to grasp it.
When his hand touched the hilt, he felt a real sensation. Parker couldn’t help but smile excitedly, exclaiming, "I! I’ve got it!"
"Don’t rush," Chen Ke cautioned. When a Spiritual Ability User holds a Holy Relic, another person, regardless of whether they have Spiritual Energy or not, can touch the Holy Relic and also borrow the intelligence of the one touching it. The principle behind Wang Ailin and the candlestick works like this.
But whether a person can truly use a Holy Relic still depends on the individual.
Chen Ke slowly loosened his hand from the hilt, making more room for Parker to grasp it firmly, until only one finger remained on the hilt.
He and Parker locked eyes, then with a whoosh, Chen Ke let go.
With a clang, the sword fell to the ground, and a white light flashed, transforming into a small diamond.
"It won’t work! What a pity!" Parker sighed.
Chen Ke picked up the Holy Diamond and slipped it into his wallet, but this was something he had anticipated, considering Parker’s current level was about the same as that of the sewer toad.
That toad probably couldn’t use the Holy Relics either.
"I’m sorry, Chen Ke, I can’t help you," Parker said. But from his expression, it seemed there was a bit of relief.
"This is what I expected... Don’t worry too much about it. Your abilities go far beyond this, and we’ll find the right way to use them," Chen Ke said.
"It sounds like I’m just a tool..." Parker crossed his arms, looking at Chen Ke.
"No, no... You’re, a companion. You know, the type who would take a bullet for me... No, no... the kind who would fight alongside me," Chen Ke argued.
"Stop, stop... you’re really not good at lying... Just tell me, what’s down there?" Parker waved his hand dismissively.
Chen Ke’s eyes emitted a blue halo as he looked down beneath his feet, and after penetrating through several floors, he saw a blue human silhouette stumbling around in the hall.
"That’s a person... but I’m not sure about his current condition..." Chen Ke explained.
"Let’s go down and find out, shall we?" Parker said.
Chen Ke nodded, no further words needed; this was a hurdle they had to overcome.
Chen Ke turned to Wang Ailin, who was kneeling on the floor, holding Mansis’s hand, a look of deep sorrow on her face.
"Just stay here, we’ll come up and find you when we’re done," Chen Ke said.
"I want to stay with the professor... You go and do what you need to," Wang Ailin said coldly.
Chen Ke stopped bothering Wang Ailin and turned to head downstairs.
The massive, bar-like growth filled the maintenance corridor and the elevator, forcing Chen Ke and Parker to take the stairway down through the containment layers.
Fortunately, although the things contained here were strange, as long as they didn’t touch anything recklessly, there were relatively few items that could cause trouble.
Silently, Chen Ke reached the last one of 20 segments of the containment site—the door to Hall 1.
A pair of double doors wasn’t fully closed and left a slight gap; a swirl of dust slipped in through it.
After waiting a few seconds, Chen Ke scanned the interior, seeing only one human silhouette wandering, and that vague voice echoed in his mind again.
"I/you=partners, open/merge, partners. The last, the last..."
Chen Ke was prepared; was that voice in his head perhaps sent by Corrigan?
He pushed open the door, and ahead of him was a circular hall with floor lighting installed, and only one circular light on the ceiling. From the floor, white light ascended, fading halfway, leaving the ceiling submerged in darkness invisible to the eye.
In the center of the hall, a glass dome suspended a palm-sized black stone. Through the distance, Chen Ke couldn’t discern the specifics of the stone.
That was the research institute’s containment item number one, although he didn’t know what the stone actually was.
Next to the dome stood an elderly man in a suit, his hair white but his face youthful, wandering about. Chen Ke walked into the hall, approaching the old man step by step.
"Lin Mo," the old man suddenly said.
"You know me..." Chen Ke exclaimed in surprise.
"It’s hard not to, given that you once worked for me," the old man said.
"Corrigan..." Chen Ke said in a deep voice.
"Having come this far, what are you here for?" Corrigan turned around, his hands crossed, clearly adopting the tone of educating someone younger.
Chen Ke noticed there was a blue stone embedded in Corrigan’s right forehead, emitting a faint blue glow.
"Don’t be surprised, Lin Mo, I survived till today because of this," Corrigan noted Chen Ke’s expression and began to explain with a smile.
"Tell me... what is this countdown..." Chen Ke asked, his voice trembling.
"This is your question? You came all the way from Opportunity City just to ask such an insignificant question...?" Corrigan chuckled.
"I thought I had let it go... accepted it... but I haven’t, I need an answer, and only you can provide it..." Chen Ke drew out a Type-67 pistol.
"I can tell you, Lin Mo, of course, I can tell you what that countdown is..." Corrigan pondered for a moment with his head down, then looked at Chen Ke.
Chen Ke clenched his teeth, staring intensely at Corrigan, and finally... finally, he could get the answer!
