Chapter 342: Chapter 342 Mr. Wang’s Spiritual Energy Mini-Lesson
"I knew it was you!" Chen Ke said, walking over and patting Parker’s shoulder. It was solid, and felt like real flesh.
"Parker, you have no idea how long I’ve been stuck here!" Parker said.
Parker briefly described the changes his body underwent after Chen Ke left the cathedral for the second time.
Parker likened the sensation to suddenly losing control of his body, as though he had been teleported somewhere instantly.
"It might be more apt to say this, I was half inside that damn cathedral, and the other half inside this room. I don’t even know how I managed it," Parker said.
Chen Ke shook his head; he didn’t know the principle behind it either, but he was certain that this phenomenon had something to do with the previous time paradox...
In the West Gold Building, where Chen Ke and Parker first met, until they were attacked by a pack of dogs in the lobby on the first floor, the experience of time for both of them changed.
In Chen Ke’s eyes, Parker’s throat was bitten by the dogs, and he was as dead as could be.
However, in Parker’s experience, he successfully defeated the pack but could no longer find Chen Ke, and he jumped through the newly opened portal, entering the Fan Hede Kingdom.
Wang Ailin was surprised by Parker’s appearance; she quickly noted everything in her notebook and copied all the readings from the four screens.
"This is unscientific! Parker! That’s your name, right? You clearly died! What exactly happened?" Wang Ailin hadn’t recovered from the shocking scene before her.
"I’ve never been dead, girl. And then... what exactly is this place?" Parker, having just regained his human form, was also confused.
"It’s a long story, Parker. This is the Spiritual Ability Research Institute... that is, the one in Norton City... and we’re currently inside the Research Institute’s containment area..." Chen Ke spread his hands.
"Fuck... Why am I in the Research Institute...? Did you guys dissect me?" Parker looked at Wang Ailin in astonishment.
"We... didn’t dissect you, but we indeed took some tissue samples from you for research..." Wang Ailin said, feeling embarrassed.
"That’s why I hate those people in white coats..." Chen Ke pursed his lips and said.
"What on earth is going on? Chen Ke? I’m getting all confused, first the West Gold Building incident, then the Great Void, and now the Research Institute..." Parker was having trouble grasping it all.
"Wait... you guys have been to the Great Void?" Wang Ailin’s eyes lit up.
"Ah... We..." Chen Ke became alert, unsure whether or not to tell her about the Fan Hede Kingdom.
"Yes, we’ve been inside, and came out alive. Of course, my way out was a bit unusual... But come to think of it, Chen Ke, how did you get out?" Parker looked at Chen Ke and asked.
"You have to tell me everything... Chen Ke, I am researching the Great Void, and without bragging... I’m one of the most knowledgeable people about the Great Void on this planet," Wang Ailin moved closer to Chen Ke, clutching the hem of his clothing, looking up at him like a little girl next door asking for sweets.
"You say you know a lot about the Great Void, right? So first tell me, what exactly is the Great Void, and what about it?" Chen Ke took a step back.
"Of course, we can, in fact, since 1920, we’ve been attempting to study the situation within the Great Void and trying to figure out its significance," Wang Ailin pushed up her glasses and entered research mode.
"In 1910, we discovered the effects of spiritual energy and then started military experiments; within just a few decades, we made remarkable progress in the field of spiritual energy application. The key turning point was the birth of Spiritual Power Injection Skill, which allowed us to harness its power to enhance the human body and create superhumans... Then came the Black Box Space, Holy Relics, Skill manuals, and so forth—a series of spiritual creations that we could utilize, followed by the development of spiritual power weapons, including firearms and bullets..." Wang Ailin explained.
"Hold on... stop the history lesson... Just tell us about the Great Void directly..." Chen Ke waved his hand.
"What I mean is, all these things are closely related to the Great Void—many of them were unearthed from the Great Void. For example, in the early explorations of the Great Void, researchers found that Holy Relics that were summoned from the Great Void could not be transformed back into diamonds, a phenomenon that to this day lacks a unified theory to explain it."
"We know spiritual energy is divided into six categories and eighteen types, and by liquefying the spiritual element in the air and injecting it into the human body, even ordinary people could use spiritual creations..." Wang Ailin paced as she spoke.
"Wait a minute, Wang Ailin, I’ve heard a lot of people tell me about this, spiritual attributes divided into six categories and eighteen types, but damn it... no one has ever told me what the six categories and eighteen types are! After 800,000 words, I still haven’t figured this out..." said Chen Ke helplessly.
"Didn’t you say you were with the Administration Bureau...? How could you not know this..." Parker glanced at Chen Ke.
"We’ll talk about that later..." Chen Ke shrugged his shoulders.
"Spiritual energy is not colorless or tasteless—at least it’s not colorless. Each category of spiritual energy has a unique color... The only reason we can’t see the colors is that the level of spiritual element absorbed by spiritual ability users is very low, preventing them from truly unleashing the power of those spiritual energies. To confirm, the various attribute bullets made by the Administration Bureau all have different colors when fired," explained Wang Ailin.
Then, she listed the six major categories of spiritual energy on a small whiteboard:
Element Attribute, Discipline Attribute, Sin Attribute, Corrosion Attribute, Mysterious Attribute, Original Attribute.
Looking at the spiritual energy classification written on the whiteboard with a marker, Chen Ke felt somewhat bewildered.
Element Attributes were easy to understand; they were just the usual metal, wood, water, fire, earth, and so on. But what about the rest? Recalling the Punishment bullet he had used, it seemed these attributes were not so simple.
"Based on the efficacy of spiritual energy and its effects on different evil creatures, we categorized the spiritual energy into six major types. This classification has been tested and perfected over more than fifty years," Wang Ailin stated.
"You just said spiritual ability users can’t unleash the real power of spiritual energy, so how do you know the efficacy of each kind of spiritual energy?" Chen Ke couldn’t help asking.
"Spiritual ability users being unable to unleash the original power of spiritual energy means they can’t project shock waves with bare hands or shoot lasers from their eyes... like in comics, but they do have the ability to wield Skill manuals and powerful Holy Relics. Spiritual ability users with different accumulations of spiritual element using the same Skill manual or Holy Relic will manifest different levels of potency," explained Wang Ailin.
Chen Ke nodded; the principle was similar to his life engine—the more life used, the more powerful the skill...
"Moreover, we can also technically collect specific attribute spiritual energy from the atmosphere, compress, and condense it. That’s how Spiritual Bullets are made," Wang Ailin said.
"What about Skills, how do spiritual ability users learn Skills?" asked Chen Ke.
"Skill manuals are recorded on some kind of ancient tablets. We suspect that there must have been a systematic set of steles in ancient times. These Skills are learned through meme transmission—just looking at them once allows one to learn them permanently. Theoretically, a person could learn an unlimited number of Skills, but if your body does not contain spiritual element, then learning the Skills is useless," explained Wang Ailin.
"Too much injected spiritual element and you’ll have to drain it, I know this," Chen Ke said, which Diana had told him.
"Right, and not everyone can handle the same amount of spiritual element; don’t expect just anyone to become a superhuman by injection. If your body can’t handle that much spiritual element and you still force an injection, you’ll end up dead," Wang Ailin nodded.
