Chapter 327: Chapter 327 [Spiritual Energy Sideline: Mysterious Shadow of the Strange Sea] Completed
Chen Ke withdrew his Holy Relics and stretched out his hand to block the blinding white light emanating from the stone.
Up close, looking at the stone in Laura’s hand was like staring directly into a 500-watt lightbulb, dazzling to the eyes.
"Wait, I’ll figure out a way to..." Laura began, reaching into her bag to pull out a handkerchief, intending to cover the stone.
However, at that moment, the light from the stone dimmed and then its surface suddenly became covered with cracks. Then, it shattered into twelve pieces, spread out in the palm of Laura’s hand.
Chen Ke had wanted to borrow it just a moment ago, suspecting that it might not be a Holy Relic but rather something like a legendary suit that had been infected with Spiritual Energy.
Laura sighed, wrapped the stone fragments in the handkerchief, and put them back in her bag.
"You shouldn’t have come down here to find me..." Chen Ke said.
"I wouldn’t have had to if you might have been dead by now," Laura replied with a smile.
"Did you have that thing from the start and never thought about using it?" Chen Ke felt rather frustrated.
"After all, I had you, Mr. Spiritual Ability User. This isn’t a place to chat; is the hole in the boat fixed?" Laura asked.
"I’ll go check; it’s dirty over there, so just stand here and don’t move," Chen Ke said, wading back through the water to the crack in the hull.
He saw that the water flow, which had been temporarily stopped, was now continuing, as when Chen Ke had used his time-stopping ability to deal with the contract demon, the effect of time suspension at that spot vanished.
"As expected, I can only suspend one target at a time..." Chen Ke muttered to himself.
Following the same method, he suspended the flow of time for the water again and checked his lifespan; he had 127 hours left.
After using the time suspension ability, one second for Chen Ke was equivalent to two seconds, meaning, after conversion, he effectively had 63.5 hours left, which was actually enough. If his lifespan wasn’t sufficient by that time, he would revert to Soul Pinching!
"How’s it looking?!" Laura’s voice shouted from a distance.
"It’s blocked! Let’s go up and see how Nathan is doing," Chen Ke replied.
The two of them exited the cabin and went up to the bridge to meet with Nathan. There were only six living people left on the ship; where they went was up to them to decide.
Nathan told Chen Ke that the ship could still manage to sail, and if nothing strange happened, it should be no problem to reach Norton City before sinking, but it definitely wouldn’t make it to the port.
"Never mind the port... Just get within the vicinity of Norton City and find some wilderness along the shore to run aground and abandon the ship," Chen Ke said.
"I was thinking the same. The Administration Bureau might be after this ship, although they surely wouldn’t expect it to be capable of leaving this sea area," Laura added.
Nathan and the three crew members started to get busy. They dared not go too fast, as the bridge had become open to the elements, and with high speeds, the winds would make it unbearable for the helmsman.
Laura and Chen Ke stood on the deck, wary of any potential dangers that might arise.
Although Laura wasn’t a Spiritual Ability User, she had many bizarre items in her bag, which could, if used, be nearly as effective as Chen Ke, and perhaps even easier to wield.
Chen Ke found some clothes belonging to the crew in the cabin and changed into them. While the style didn’t match his own, at least his new outfit was dry and intact.
"What was that stone just now?"
Gazing at the sea under the peaceful moonlight, Chen Ke couldn’t help but ask, driven by curiosity.
"It’s something I found in some ruins. I’ve been using it to fight against Spiritual Monsters, but evidently, I’ve used it too many times..." Laura answered generously, without any concealment.
"Ruins... What kind of ruins would house such a thing?" Chen Ke spread his hands.
"Chen Ke, are you interested in history?" Laura asked with a smile.
"Why do you ask that all of a sudden?" Chen Ke was puzzled.
"Have you ever thought about the fact that recorded human history is only a little over four thousand years, but Homo sapiens appeared 250,000 years ago? In those unrecorded eras, what exactly were we doing?" Laura gazed at the stars, seemingly fascinated by such questions.
"Advancements in eras don’t happen overnight," Chen Ke said. "You have to consider the stage-like improvements brought about by explosive innovations. The first time we looked up at the stars, the first time we sparked fire from wood, even the first industrial revolution..."
"Of course, I’m well aware of that, but I’m still very curious. Chen Ke, take this stone, for example. It was a burial item from an ancient royal family, and clearly, it’s a handcrafted artifact. If we already had the ability to possess and use such power back then, why wasn’t it until 1910 that we regained this strength?" Laura said.
"I don’t know, Laura, I’m not an archaeologist. The Administration Bureau and the Spiritual Ability Research Institute should have a clearer understanding of these things," Chen Ke said.
"No, they’re more interested in those strange doorways and all sorts of pretty little diamonds, but they don’t understand that to review the past can help us understand the new, insight into history can let us foresee tomorrow," Laura sighed.
"It sounds like you’ve done your research on these things, not just a history teacher who sticks to the textbook," Chen Ke said.
"I prefer to take action and see things with my own eyes to make sure what I see and hear isn’t a lie," Laura said.
"If I have the chance... Laura, could you take me to see that ruin when you’re free?" Chen Ke looked at Laura.
"Uh... that’s..." Laura began hesitantly.
"It’s okay," Chen Ke said, looking toward the horizon.
"That’s not what I meant, Chen Ke. I mean, when I came out of that ruin, it just happened to collapse..." Laura said with a laugh.
"It collapsed...?" Chen Ke asked, puzzled.
"Yes, physically collapsed. There’s nothing left there now but a pile of rocks. Speaking of which, it seems like every ruin I’ve entered eventually collapses," Laura said.
"That’s really... a pity. But if you find any other odd places in the future, you could call me to help. I won’t charge... just as long as I can have a share of whatever’s inside," Chen Ke suggested casually.
Laura thought for a moment, then pulled out her waterproof phone.
"Having a companion who can confront monsters head-on wouldn’t be bad, give me your phone number."
Chen Ke smiled and entered his phone number into Laura’s phone.
After sailing on the ocean for over three hours, the sky shifted from pitch-black to a deep blue, and Chen Ke, looking at the dark blue sea, felt for a moment as though he saw a gigantic woman’s face.
Suddenly, three lines of small text popped up in the corner of his eye:
[Category: Deity]
[Form: Physical]
[Status: Active]
A huge black tail fin flipped out of the water, creating a splash, then disappeared beneath the sea.
"It’s a whale, looks like we should be out now."
In the open-air cockpit, a crew member also witnessed this scene and said to Nathan.
"Oh, there are whales in the inland sea?" Nathan said.
"Who knows," another crew member replied.
Another hour passed, and other ships appeared on the horizon, signaling that they had left the mysterious sea area.
"We’re out, haha!" The three crew members, having survived a great ordeal, hugged and cheered in the open-air cockpit.
Surely, this experience would get exaggerated and embellished, eventually erasing Chen Ke, Nathan, and Laura from the story, turning it into a legendary tale of their own.
As the sun’s rays radiated across the sky from the eastern coastline and a flock of white seagulls appeared, looking west, Chen Ke and his companions saw the color of land.
