Chapter 314: Sea of Nightmares
Chapter 314: Chapter 314: Sea of Nightmares
"I must be seeing things," Chen Ke turned back to look at Laura and Nathan, unable to believe his eyes.
The plane was enormous, its color indiscernible in the night sky, completely engulfed in flames.
The left wing broke off during its fall, making a rumbling noise, then plummeted straight into the sea, creating a huge splash.
The sound of the anti-aircraft guns was still thundering in their ears, and Chen Ke felt the whole ship shaking from side to side. At the same time, the sky was filled with the roar of airplane engines.
The three of them looked up to see many planes flying across the night sky, appearing and disappearing among the clouds, surrounded by the fireworks left by the exploding anti-aircraft shells.
"What the hell is this, are we at the scene of a Pacific Ocean sea battle?" Nathan exclaimed in surprise.
Not just Chen Ke and his companions, but other people on the ship also heard the commotion outside, some crew members couldn’t help their curiosity, and looked up from the staircase.
Chen Ke himself didn’t understand what was happening. Had their ship entered a war zone? Was the reason the Administration Bureau sealed off this area of sea simply because of the war?
Or perhaps, it was a time-distorted space, similar to the Great Void, where a past battle was looping endlessly?
Chen Ke shook his head, feeling that none of his ideas were plausible, and for some reason, he always felt like someone would laugh whenever he thought about it.
"What is Conrad doing...?" Laura suddenly asked.
Chen Ke looked up, his vision piercing through the bridge, and saw only a human silhouette sitting in the captain’s cabin.
He couldn’t help frowning, there should also be a helmsman and a navigator in the pilot house... their silhouettes were gone, which can only mean that they were dead.
"I’m going to go up and check. It’s better if you guys stay here," Chen Ke said, turning back to them.
"That’s not fair, Chen Ke." Nathan shook his head.
"This has never been fair, Nathan. At this critical moment, let’s not play acts with each other," Chen Ke said and summoned a Blasphemous Dagger in his left hand.
Laura was already mentally prepared, so she wasn’t too surprised to see Chen Ke summoning the Holy Relic, but it was still novel for her to witness the summoning process from such a close distance.
But it was Nathan’s first time learning of Chen Ke’s Spiritual Power, so when Chen Ke summoned the Blasphemous Dagger, he was somewhat taken aback.
"Oh my god, you mean... you are... a Spiritual Ability User?" Nathan was incredulous.
"That’s right, I’m a Spiritual Ability User. Now I want to know what you two do. I hope you’ll answer truthfully because I need to assess how capable you are," Chen Ke said sternly.
"I’m an archaeologist... an adventurer. I’ve seen things that you’ve never even heard of. I can take care of myself, even against those messed up things," said Laura.
"Oh, I just knew it, Ms. Laura definitely couldn’t be the kind of history teacher who stands at the podium giving lectures," said Nathan.
"Why not talk about what you do, Nathan?" Laura asked.
"I’m a treasure hunter. With all due respect, I’ve seen things that perhaps even you have never seen," Nathan replied.
"Oh... is that so...?" Laura was skeptical.
"I get it, you two are just ordinary people... So, stay in the cabin, I’ll go up alone to check. If anything goes wrong, I’ll find a way to let you know," Chen Ke said.
"You’re underestimating us too much, but I agree with you," Nathan said, nodding and turning to walk down.
"Maybe I can go to the stern to take a look, to find some clues," suggested Laura.
"No, that thing is very dangerous... Even now I can’t clearly say what it is... It’s best if you don’t act recklessly," Chen Ke advised.
"Laura nodded. "Then take care of yourself."
Chen Ke knew he couldn’t persuade these two, they were sure to take action, so he didn’t waste any more words and could only hope for the best.
He patted Laura’s shoulder, gripped the Blasphemous Dagger in his left hand and held his gun in the right, adopting a standard CQC posture, and quickly sprinted up the bridge’s stairs.
Scaning with Spiritual Vision, the entire bridge had people only in the captain’s cabin, but he still carefully entered the door, first stepping into the cockpit to look around.
On the ground lay two bodies, facing skyward with both hands clutching their necks as if they had suffocated to death.
Obviously, these were the pilot and the one who had severed his hand, Chen Ke squatted down to check and found black handprints on their necks and black blood flowing from their eyes, nose, and mouth, which reminded him of the child in the kitchen.
He came to the door of the captain’s cabin and saw that it was covered with black handprints of the same size as a child’s; Chen Ke tried to open the hatch only to find it was locked from the inside.
Through the porthole, Chen Ke saw Conrad sitting in a chair holding a picture frame, sobbing over something, and completely out of his mind. He knocked on the door and shouted, "Conrad! Pull yourself together! Conrad!"
Just shouting like that was of no use; Chen Ke put his gun back in its holster, and a pile of white ash appeared in the palm of his right hand, the ash accumulating more and more and accompanied by sparks of Flame.
It was An Helei’s Witch Fire, Magic Flames over 1000 degrees that could melt anything.
Chen Ke pressed his palm against the door, keeping his body as far away from the door frame as possible, and the surrounding air immediately became oppressively hot.
The high temperature emanating from his right palm seemed to insulate his hand completely; he didn’t feel any heat, but the whole door was now slightly red and emanating an unpleasant burnt smell.
With a clang, the round valve on the door fell off first, the structure of the entire door had been destroyed, and the upper half collapsed as well due to the hollowing out from the burn through the middle, turning yellow and black, melting into a viscous liquid.
After burning for about 40 seconds, 60% of the door had melted away, leaving only a piece of junk metal the size of a shield that fell to the ground, and there were scorch marks next to the door frame.
Chen Ke stepped into the captain’s cabin, scanned the inside environment, then went straight to Conrad.
Conrad was now delirious, with tears streaming down his face as he clutched the picture frame, repeating "I’m sorry, I’m sorry."
Chen Ke shook Conrad, trying to snap him back to reality.
"Conrad, Conrad! What happened here just now?" Chen Ke asked anxiously.
"I’m sorry... I shouldn’t have done this... It’s all my fault... I’m sorry..." Conrad muttered softly.
Chen Ke moved behind Conrad to look at the frame he was holding, which contained a family portrait.
It was a picture of Conrad with his wife and son, taken in a park-like setting, and from the looks of it, Conrad must have been in his forties at the time.
In the picture, Conrad was in military uniform, seemingly ready to deploy. If Chen Ke wasn’t mistaken, it must have been the year the Gulf War had just begun.
The little boy in the center appeared to be seven or eight years old, wearing a blue short-sleeve shirt and brown shorts, with dense golden medium-length hair, and his skin was an unhealthy white...
Chen Ke suddenly felt a chill run down his scalp.
And on the boy’s right side was Conrad’s wife. She had brown long hair, was wearing a teal dress, and her right hand had a string of amber beads.
"Conrad..." Chen Ke shook Conrad’s shoulder, but he still had no reaction.
"I think I know what’s happened here..." Chen Ke said faintly.
