Chapter 312: Chapter 312: Both You and I Have Secrets
Fei Huang hurried down the stairs and walked into the crew lounge, Conrad’s voice emanating from the ship’s broadcast. The crew didn’t know what had happened, but all of them, following Conrad’s instructions, picked up their weapons and crowded in the corridor, staring at the loudspeakers on the ceiling, surrounded by a noisy commotion.
"What happened, Fei Huang?" Laura’s voice came from the other end of the hallway; she squeezed past the crew members and waved at Fei Huang.
In this noisy environment, the strange incident that had just occurred seemed less terrifying. For a moment, Fei Huang wondered if he had simply seen things wrong.
He too moved towards where Laura was, and then they both bypassed the crowd and headed to the kitchen, which was less crowded.
"I just saw a child, at the stern. It slipped behind the crane arm and disappeared," said Fei Huang.
Laura understood what Fei Huang meant without needing an explanation.
Because when describing the child, Fei Huang had used "it" rather than "him."
In English, "it" is used for non-human entities, while "him" is for humans, just like "it" and "he" in Chinese.
"Where do you think it might be now?" asked Laura.
"I don’t know. If this thing has a physical body, its movements should follow physical logic... It would need to climb or open doors to get to other areas of the ship," Fei Huang analyzed.
"Could it possibly be..." Laura crossed her arms, as though thinking of something unpleasant.
"If it’s something like a demon spirit... that would be troublesome," nodded Fei Huang, aware of what Laura was worried about.
It wasn’t the monsters that could open doors that were feared, but the ones that could pass through walls.
"How did Conrad know about this? Did you tell him?" Laura inquired.
"Yes, but Conrad has installed surveillance cameras on the ship; he can see what’s happening in every corner. Unfortunately, even so, he didn’t spot that child," Fei Huang replied.
"Wait... he installed surveillance cameras?" Laura frowned.
Fei Huang understood Laura’s concern. Without a word, he knew that Laura was definitely not just a university history teacher as she claimed. Under the current atmosphere on the ship, she was too calm for a teacher.
"I don’t know if he has cameras in the cabins, but from what I glanced at, it seems he cares more about the fish hold below and the side gangways. Hainerd is also afraid of something climbing onto the ship," said Fei Huang.
"I hope you’re right, Fei Huang. I don’t want to be on a ship with a pervert," Laura sighed.
"Have you seen Nathan?" Fei Huang suddenly asked.
It was strange that Nathan hadn’t appeared in this situation. Fei Huang activated his Spiritual Vision and scanned the crew lounge, his sight filled with numerous blue human silhouettes overlapping each other, making it impossible to distinguish one from another.
He then looked down at his feet, near the fish hold, and spotted a figure.
"I knew it... this Nathan is not a quiet guy," Fei Huang thought to himself.
"Fei Huang... just now..." Laura warned.
Fei Huang snapped out of it and realized she had moved a couple of steps away from him and was gripping a kitchen knife from the chef’s counter.
"Is it that obvious?" The blue glow faded from Fei Huang’s pupils, returning to their original color.
"Are you... a Spiritual Ability User?" Laura became alert.
"Yes, and you, definitely aren’t a history teacher. Am I right?" Fei Huang asked.
Laura looked at Fei Huang, her mind swirling with thoughts, and after a few seconds, she put down the kitchen knife.
"Spiritual Ability Users aren’t that uncommon, so why are you so guarded?" Fei Huang asked curiously.
"Either you’re illegal, or you’re with the Administration Bureau, and I think the former is more likely. You know better than I do how dangerous an illegal Spiritual Ability User can be," Laura replied truthfully.
"There are exceptions, Ms. Laura," Chen Ke smiled.
"Then prove it to me," Laura said.
"I usually..." Chen Ke had just begun speaking when he saw a boy of about seven or eight behind Laura, standing next to the kitchen counter.
Laura could tell what had happened just by looking at Chen Ke’s face. She didn’t make a sound, knowing she shouldn’t turn around.
The little boy wore a blue short-sleeved shirt and brown shorts, his thick golden mid-length hair framing his sickly pale skin. His eyes lacked pupils, and black pus-blood dripped from his mouth as he stood motionless.
Chen Ke activated his Spiritual Vision, but in his field of view, the boy’s form had no outline whatsoever.
No sense of malice nor effect from Spiritual Vision: this was the second entity, following Bader, that caused Chen Ke’s abilities to fail.
In that case, striking first was paramount.
Almost within two seconds, Chen Ke drew his gun and pulled the trigger, aiming behind Laura at the little boy. A crisp ’ding, ding, ding’ sounded as the modified Type 67 pistol ejected three bullet casings.
The bullets missed their target; the little boy vanished the instant Chen Ke fired, with all bullets hitting a pot.
Chen Ke lowered the gun, darted into the kitchen, and looked everywhere, but could no longer find the boy. He had disappeared without a trace, just like before on the deck.
He shook his head, looking at the gun in his hand, quite satisfied with its silencing effect.
"Did you just see... it?" Laura followed him in and asked.
"Yes, but it disappeared into thin air. This is exactly what I was worried about. That thing could be some kind of invisible Demon Spirit," Chen Ke said.
"I’ve never seen a gun like yours..." Laura seemed to be focusing on something different than Chen Ke.
Chen Ke raised his hand and waved the gun in front of Laura’s eyes, saying, "The Fei Huang Type 67, of course it’s a modified version, not for sale."
"I thought you’d use Spiritual Guns or Transcendent abilities... You should know ordinary bullets are useless against that kind of thing, right?" Laura said, hands on her hips.
"I’ll use them when the time comes, but as you know, we’re on a ship. I don’t want to accidentally sink it," Chen Ke slid the gun back into its holster.
"You’re right, Chen Ke. I should go back to my cabin and pack my things," Laura said, turning and running out of the kitchen.
Chen Ke didn’t follow Laura. Her secrets didn’t concern him, and he had no interest in her. Now he had two choices: go up to find Conrad and tell him what happened in the kitchen or go down to the fish hold and see what Nathan was up to.
Chen Ke chose the latter.
He had always felt Nathan wasn’t the trustworthy sort, and given the current situation, Nathan’s decision to sneak into the fish hold surely had a motive, which greatly worried Chen Ke.
At critical moments, the last thing one needed was someone with a hidden agenda.
Chen Ke squeezed through the crowd and descended the steel ladder. Most of the crew were gathered in the resting area and the bridge, leaving the fish hold virtually deserted. In Chen Ke’s vision, he saw only a blue outline of a person lurking near the fish hold, seemingly searching for something.
Chen Ke instinctively drew his gun, treating Nathan as a dangerous person. Nathan was very likely in search of the Holy Relics that Conrad had smuggled, which were worth a fortune.
Chen Ke had no idea how Nathan found out about them. Maybe he hadn’t even come for the relics at all.
Down at the very bottom of the fishing boat, the temperature was noticeably warmer than above. The loud roar of the engine room combined with the dim red light could easily induce psychological discomfort, but such conditions barely affected Chen Ke.
He approached Nathan, who was at the stern of the boat, with caution, attempting to see what he was up to before being noticed.
And at that moment, Chen Ke saw something strange once again.
