Chapter 305: Endless Troubles
Chapter 305: Chapter 305: Endless Troubles
"Will, we’re done here. How about you?" the two agents who were still in the crew rest area spoke casually into the walkie-talkie.
The next second, sharp knives were plunged into their throats. As the blades sliced through their necks, the crewmembers quickly covered the wounds with towels to avoid blood splatter.
The method was clean and swift; this definitely wasn’t their first time. The agent still outside had no idea that all his people had already died onboard.
The two agents died silently, their bodies quietly laid flat. Afterwards, the crew returned to their rooms, pried open the layers under the bed frame, and pulled out an unloaded, folding stock version of the AKS-74U.
Laura and Nathan were somewhat surprised by the crew’s actions; Chen Ke, however, was not surprised. If it were him, he might have done the same.
The crew loaded the magazines into the guns and carefully chambered rounds, then they gathered at the deck stairs. After signalling each other, they charged up the next second.
Instantly, rapid gunfire erupted outside, while the crew below also armed themselves and rushed toward the deck.
Chen Ke, Laura, and Nathan could only temporarily stand close to the cabin walls, clearing a path for them.
Through his spiritual vision, Chen Ke observed the situation outside; a large number of crew members quickly attacked the opposite ship, killed all the unsuspecting Bureau of Administration’s Sea Patrol agents, and stormed their ship to seize control.
As expected, these Sea Patrol agents must have all been ordinary people because Chen Ke heard and saw them return fire but no one used spiritual powers.
Conrad must have known this too, which is why he dared to make the first move. It made sense; if common sea patrols involved spiritual ability users, it would be too extravagant.
The fight ended within five minutes. The opposing ship did not have many armed agents; the number of people on both ships was about even, with possibly even fewer combatants on the Bureau’s ship.
Once the gunfire outside ceased, Chen Ke saw the crew force the surviving members of the Administration’s ship onto the deck of the Endurance, lining them up and making them kneel with their hands on their heads.
"We need to go out and see this. I never knew the people on this ship were like this!" Laura said angrily.
"I suggest you better not go out. Let’s pretend nothing happened and go back to our cabin. Let Conrad handle the rest," Nathan advised, glancing at Chen Ke who nodded in agreement.
The inland sea was not lawless, but it was not uncommon for a few people to die or ships to sink, reminding Chen Ke of something Pankia had said.
"The world operates like this... it just so happens to be us..."
Underworld has its rules, and smuggling of Holy Relics is also a part of the Spiritual Power Industry. No agency can break this chain.
"This isn’t fair!" Laura exclaimed and turned, wanting to rush out.
"Listen, Laura," Chen Ke grabbed her arm.
"Listen, we are on their ship; they have over twenty people, all armed. What do you think you can do? I don’t know where you originally planned to go when you boarded this ship, but I must reach Norton City tonight," Chen Ke said.
"Keep a low profile, he’s right," Nathan also advised.
At that moment, gunfire erupted outside the cabin.
Chen Ke looked up and, through the deck, saw only seven surviving Administration workers. A crew member, holding a handgun, was executing them point-blank.
"I’m going to rest now, can you let go of me?" Laura said, realizing she couldn’t do anything.
Chen Ke looked at Laura, loosened his grip, and she returned to her cabin, displeased, slamming the door shut.
"You did well just now. I bet it’s like a scene from a 17th-century pirate movie outside," Nathan said.
"I think so, too. Now is not the time to provoke them. I hope this little incident doesn’t delay our journey," Chen Ke replied.
"Maybe," Nathan said noncommittally.
At that moment, Conrad came down from the deck and found Chen Ke and Nathan.
"Gentlemen, where’s... Laura?"
Conrad looked around but didn’t spot Laura.
"She’s in her room; it seems the recent commotion has worried her," explained Nathan.
"Things have been settled. We failed to agree on a few matters, so you’d better stay off the deck for the upcoming while; there’s some cleaning up to do," Conrad said with a laugh.
For some reason, Chen Ke always felt as though he saw a different person every time he looked at Conrad. His personality seemed to change every minute.
"We understand; we won’t go up. Just let us know when the ship docks," Nathan responded with a laugh.
"Excellent. What about you, Mr. Chen?" Conrad turned to Chen Ke.
"Of course, of course," Chen Ke nodded slightly.
"Alright, best inform Miss Laura too. I have many things to attend to, so I’ll take my leave now," Conrad said.
Watching Conrad walk away, Nathan shook his head, Chen Ke saw that he was a smooth operator but he still had his own principles.
Two people had been killed right before their eyes, yet Laura and Nathan hadn’t shown the typical reactions of ordinary people—no fear, no confusion. Nathan had chosen to keep a low profile, whereas Laura had burst forth with a sense of justice similar to Diana.
These two were nothing like the roles they had introduced themselves as.
"I’m also heading back to my room; maybe I should get some sleep. What do you think?" Nathan asked with a smile.
"If I may ask, how did you and Laura end up on this ship? Where are you headed?" Chen Ke suddenly asked.
"We were headed to Carefree City, but halfway through, Conrad said we needed to make a detour to Opportunity City to pick someone up—look, it was you. Then, he plans to drop you off at Norton City first; you’ll definitely be the first one to disembark," Nathan replied with a smile.
"It sounds like I’ve wasted your time," Chen Ke shrugged.
"No, no, no... I didn’t mean that. Besides... mate, you probably have an idea of why we boarded this ship. Perhaps it’s best to just keep playing our roles and not delve too much into each other’s past, right?" Nathan suggested.
Chen Ke’s lips curled up slightly, and he nodded.
"Taking that as a yes, then see you. We’ll see you off when you disembark," Nathan said, then turned and headed back to his cabin.
With nothing else to do now and having experienced these recent events, Chen Ke could only return to his cramped cabin, curl up on the cramped folding bed, close the door, and quietly assess everyone on board using his Spiritual Vision.
Laura was in her cabin writing something; was it a diary?
True to his words, Nathan was lying on the bed, but his hands fidgeted with something, unclear what he was playing with.
The crew was busy on the deck; they were throwing the bodies of the Administration Bureau’s Sea Patrol Team overboard, letting sharks erase the evidence. They seemed to also be stripping the Administration Bureau’s gear to stock their own armory.
Besides that, the crew was also transferring something onto the other ship, needing two people to manage, and they seemed to be going down into the machine room of the other ship—Chen Ke guessed it was explosives.
Blowing up the opposing ship and throwing its crew into the sea to feed the fish was indeed the method of sea smugglers—back in the 17th century, these people would have been professional pirates.
After busying themselves for half an hour, Endurance finally started moving again, leaving the Administration Bureau’s ship far behind.
As Endurance sailed away, a huge explosion was heard; the side of the Administration Bureau’s patrol boat was blown open, creating a massive hole. Water poured into the engine room in an instant, and in less than a minute, the ship began to tilt and sinking was just a matter of time.
