Chapter 271: One Against Four
Chapter 271: Chapter 271: One Against Four
The siege outside the city had weakened slightly, signaling that the Sun Sect’s forces were not as numerous as he had previously thought. What should have been an overwhelming siege had now entered a wasteful phase that was costing lives.
The entire Fan Hede was like a meat grinder, with both Fan Hede soldiers and members of the Sun Sect pouring their lives into it, seeing who would be wiped out first. Chen Ke believed there was a high chance that the Sun Sect would break first.
After all, the worst fear for those attacking a city is the inability to achieve a swift and decisive victory; there’s even a saying in middle school Chinese textbooks, "With the first drumbeat comes vigor, with the second a decline, and with the third exhaustion." The same principle applied to sieges.
Initially, when the city walls fell, the morale of the Sun Sect’s soldiers would be greatly boosted, and their killing intent would be at its strongest, pushing into the city and forgetting life and death.
Then, when their advance was stalled, ensnared in the close combat of the town, Fan Hede’s soldiers would make use of the city’s streets and layout to abruptly halt the previously unstoppable momentum of the Sun Sect, cutting their morale and confidence in combat by half.
Eventually, the Silver Knights entered the fray. Facing fewer in number but tremendously powerful Silver Knights, who could fight ten men each, the Sun Sect’s morale would plummet, leading to a reversal of the battle situation.
The current situation couldn’t be clearer; the Silver Knights, in groups of three, though not many in number, were hunting within the city, slaughtering squads of Sun Sect soldiers who had broken into the city, while the soldiers outside remained unaware of this, continuing to charge in.
The result was that the casualties of Fan Hede had dramatically decreased, and the losses of the Sun Sect had begun to mount.
The turning of the tide happened in an instant, and it seemed that their defeat tonight was inevitable.
The only unclear matter now was what the Black Ring Sect was doing in this war?
Since the Sun Sect was the former state religion of Fan Hede, why didn’t they attack the cathedral instead of besieging the royal palace?
Chen Ke walked and pondered, his Silver Knight armor allowing him to occasionally see Sun Sect soldiers from a distance, who consciously would detour around him.
The Sun Sect soldiers who remained in the city and had not died were aware of the might of the Silver Knights.
At that moment, Chen Ke caught a glimpse of something from the corner of his eye; under the detection of Spiritual Vision, a humanoid figure was silently watching the street from the rooftop.
Wasn’t that the guy in the next-generation armor, the ironclad warrior?
Chen Ke was startled and instinctively raised his shield to his chest. That guy was indeed still alive, but his chest armor had been directly struck by a Soul Crystal Gun, leaving behind a large, burn-like white mark.
The Crystal Gun didn’t just rely on the sharpness of the crystals to harm people; when it hit the target, the explosion in that instant would unleash a magical blast, similar to a kind of firecracker that Chen Ke played with as a child in the countryside, which would pop upon hitting the ground.
"No, he shouldn’t be able to recognize me now," Chen Ke thought to himself, trying his best not to look directly at the other party, and continued to walk as if nothing was happening.
What mattered now was to find the way to the cathedral, which was built into the middle of a cliff and directly connected to the overhead bridge. However, Chen Ke had not yet found a way to get onto the bridge.
There must be a way in the town that led directly to the cathedral; no urban planner would construct a building that no one could reach out of thin air.
Hearing a whooshing sound by his ear, Chen Ke looked up to see the ironclad warrior actually emitting blue light from his feet, flying straight up onto the bridge pier.
Is this armor so advanced...? It even comes with a flying device? It’s getting more and more like Iron Man...
As Chen Ke looked up at him, the ironclad warrior also looked down at Chen Ke. He didn’t recognize Chen Ke but took him for a Fan Hede Silver Knight distracted by a strange object and paid him no more attention.
"Fly far away, better not come down again," Chen Ke snorted coldly.
This guy was full of secrets that he surely wouldn’t reveal to Chen Ke, and Chen Ke was not confident he could defeat him in a head-on fight. A direct hit from a Crystal Gun couldn’t even break his armor, so Chen Ke was not his match for now. It was better to keep the peace.
"It’s a lone Silver Knight."
Just as Chen Ke’s gaze returned to the road, four Sun Sect soldiers sprang out from the street corner. Their gear was incomplete and they looked to have sustained some injuries; probably a makeshift squad that had reformed after being scattered.
The opponent eyed him warily, as if to suggest the four of them together still had a chance of taking him down.
"We can beat him, there are four of us, and he’s just one," the soldiers of the Sun Sect mustered their courage and adopted a combat stance.
"Don’t underestimate me, I am..." Chen Ke had barely started speaking when the four individuals across threw four thunder spears at him.
"Whoosh!"
"Whoosh!"
"Whoosh!"
"Whoosh!"
Four yellow-orange thunder javelins assaulted Chen Ke, moving so fast they eclipsed a premium account’s download speed. Chen Ke couldn’t even react with his shield before his vision exploded in flashes.
A powerful impact sent him flying, and under the heavy inertia of his armor, he landed on his back, feeling each muscle and every vessel seared by the fierce current.
"Blargh..." Chen Ke felt a heat in his throat and a mouthful of blood choked out. He sat up abruptly, blood dripping down from the helmet’s dark seams onto the ground.
Damn it...
Chen Ke cursed silently, looked up, and then came another four thunder spears!
He yelled out an expletive and was struck down by the lightning again, kneeling on one knee. The pain and numbing sensation of his muscles and blood being torn by the current left him feeling completely drained.
This damned armor was supposed to reduce electric shock damage by 70%... It must be a fake... Chen Ke shook his head, but then he heard a terrified voice from the opposite side.
"He didn’t die after eight direct hits with thunder spears... Are all the knights of the Black Ring Sect monsters?" Although the group of Sun Knights had brought Chen Ke to his knees with electricity, it was clear that this was not the result they had anticipated.
Being hit by a single thunder spear was essentially a death sentence; the fact that he could still move after eight was definitely not normal.
Chen Ke clenched his teeth and his body returned to normal. He stood up vigorously and, with his shield raised, charged toward the enemy.
"I can’t use the Crystal Soul Gun now, that tin can is up there, and if he sees, he might come down and cause me trouble..." Thinking this, Chen Ke swept up his shield for a bash, leveraging the weight of his own armor to send a Sun Sect soldier flying through the air.
Next, with his right hand, he drew his longsword and chopped down at another soldier.
"Clang!"
The opponent reacted quickly, and even without a shield managed to block Chen Ke’s strike. Meanwhile, the other two soldiers launched their attacks at Chen Ke.
However, the defensive capabilities of the silver knight’s armor were so remarkable that the two iron swords clanging against him produced no damage, and Chen Ke felt no pain at all.
He roared in frustration, wielding his shield with a war cry, smashing open the head of the soldier in front of him, then turned around and dealt another shield bash, sending another soldier from his side into the air.
These hits made Chen Ke realize that his strength seemed greater than before.
When he had been fighting the saucy-talking toad in the sewers, wielding a small, broken shield was strenuous, yet now in heavy armor, he could easily use a heavy shield to bludgeon people. It seemed the increase in his life’s upper limit had enhanced certain physical abilities.
Perhaps, an extended lifespan limit didn’t just mean how long one could live, but also represented the level of one’s strength... But was it just physical strength that improved? What about speed and intelligence?
Chen Ke plunged the longsword into the chest of a Sun Sect soldier, pressed down with both hands on the hilt until it hit bottom, forcing the enemy to kneel before him. Then, stepping on the soldier’s shoulder, he pulled the sword out, blood splattering all over.
After shaking the blood off his sword, Chen Ke looked up at the chapel on the cliff and walked toward the street ahead.
