Chapter 693: Chapter 597: The Trinity Goddess
Yeg ultimately didn’t agree to Amberser’s request, but he didn’t outright refuse either, simply saying that he needed to go back and discuss the matter with the Grim Reaper Kranvo.
It seemed Amberser’s idea was still too bold. Conservatively minded Yeg couldn’t accept it on short notice.
It was a bit of a pity, Amberser’s plan still required the Grim Reaper’s aid to quickly take effect, otherwise, they would have to rely on the Magic Mirror to slowly ferment.
However, the problem wasn’t big, after all, Kranvo and Hircine were enemies as well, and this Grim Reaper likely wished to eliminate his enemy before retirement.
The meeting wasn’t completely fruitless—Yeg created a new Necromancy Codex on the spot for Amberser to use, proving that he hadn’t been kicked out of the Elegy Poetry Society. After Yeg left, the Poet came over with a wine glass in hand and said to Amberser, "You still want to be a Grim Reaper? Want to know what Yeg’s criteria really are?"
Amberser asked doubtfully, "Senpai, you know? You’re willing to tell me?"
The Poet smiled and said, "The condition is that you must be prepared because you’re not at all qualified, so I’ll tell you."
"No worries, being a Grim Reaper would be a pleasant surprise, so it’s no big deal if I don’t get it."
This was Amberser’s honest opinion—as he had earlier performed, Yeg must have been brainwashed by the "Shire Scripture" into imbecility to let him be a Grim Reaper; weren’t they scared he would sell one Resurrection Technique for two hundred Gold Coins?
The Poet was slightly surprised, not expecting Amberser to be so open-minded, poured him another drink, and then said, "Actually, I don’t want you to have any illusions so you won’t waste your time. Besides, by the looks of it, you’re still going to stir things up. Every time you dance on the blade of the Gods, you risk death. I really wouldn’t want you to rely on the Deity Position of the Grim Reaper, in case you can’t be saved."
"I understand, cheers to you!"
Amberser genuinely felt the Poet had been very good to him, always helping, with little recompense on his part.
"Okay, as long as you know. Yeg initially chose the Undead as candidates because most previous Grim Reapers had been living beings."
Perplexed, Amberser asked, "Is there a problem with living beings being Grim Reapers? The power of a Deity Position should be blind to race."
"It’s not that the power is insufficient. The Deity Position of a Grim Reaper is plenty powerful; even an ant becoming a Grim Reaper wouldn’t make too much difference. The problem is the power of the Grim Reaper is too strong. In theory, all deceased souls must go through the Grim Reaper’s review, whether they go down to Hell, ascend to the Divine Realm, or are sent to the Wall of the Faithless—it’s all up to the Grim Reaper.
"This is an extremely important, yet incredibly boring job. If mortals become Grim Reapers for too long, they either become ambitious, slowly developing undesired desires and beginning to wield this power recklessly, or they become bored, weary from the repetitive work, and unwilling to continue.
"This was the case with Hircine and Kranvo, and even Yeg himself stepped down from the Grim Reaper’s position due to his own boredom, otherwise it would be impossible to change Grim Reapers."
The Poet’s explanation surprised Amberser, revealing there was such a thing as changing Grim Reapers.
Even Yeg himself couldn’t bear the boredom of eons of labor, so he searched for someone to replace him, while Yeg himself acted as a fallback, ready to switch replacements should anyone underperform.
A fine Grim Reaper Deity Position, managed like a corporate CEO, replaced at will.
"What argument is there then for the Undead? Do the Undead have any advantages?" Amberser asked, puzzled.
The Poet clarified, "Intelligent Undead typically have just one fixation, maintaining this fixation allows them to live stable lives indefinitely. Look at the members of the Elegy Poetry Society; amongst the Undead, they’re quite unique individuals. As long as their fixation remains, their behavior and personalities stay consistent. Emotional stability is what a Grim Reaper needs most."
Amberser suddenly understood. No wonder all his group members were atypical Undead, each more eccentric than the last. But on reflection, the group members’ fixations were quite manageable.
For Amberser initially, it was just about getting enough money; for the Gareth couple, just letting them live together solved everything. Aige just wanted to resurrect his father, which wouldn’t conflict with the duties of a Grim Reaper.
Aside from the Withered Rose fervently desiring the destruction of Laine, everyone else’s fixations were fairly satisfactory... oh, it seems Hake Stone was just filling numbers, this Vampire had no fixed fixation, much like a mortal, lacking in no kind of desires.
Pretty cunning indeed, truly cunning.
It’s no wonder the Poet said Amberser no longer qualified; he’d rediscovered all the desires of a mortal, no longer just the money-loving Lich.
Amberser continued to inquire, "Then with so many people, how do you select?"
The Poet chuckled, then said, "Although the Undead are relatively stable, a fixation is a vulnerability—Grim Reapers can’t have such obvious vulnerabilities; they’re too easily targeted. Thus, Yeg hopes to find an Undead transcending their desires, achieving this would make them perfect successors to the Grim Reaper."
Amberser frowned and said, "Such vague standards? What does transcending even mean?"
The Poet shook his head, "Can’t explain it, the interpretation is in Yeg’s hands."
"Pfft, pulling that stunt again."
Amberser disliked these so-called "moral requirements" the most; he could accept the complex formulas, temperatures, ratios, and techniques of alchemy, all concrete and traceable. These logical rules you could learn, master, and strive for, but moral character, when voiced, tends to be inexplicably mystical, patently illogical.
