Chapter 661: Chapter 579: The Devil’s Daily Life_3
"Tell me, do you work for Diga Ultraman, the Lich, and was it you who leaked the exam questions to those alchemy apprentices?"
Parurier said with a smile, "Knowledge must be exchanged with knowledge. I have answers to both of your questions, but what do you have to offer in exchange?"
Gustavo Flint frowned and asked, "Is that considered knowledge as well?"
Parurier explained, "Our conversation today is also a part of history, and history is indeed a form of knowledge, wouldn’t you agree?"
Though it was a sophism, Gustavo Flint understood devils never give mortals anything for nothing. To get an answer from this Succubus, it seemed he really had to offer something.
"What do you want?" Gustavo Flint asked.
Parurier thought for a moment and then said, "You asked two questions, both about my personal secrets. So, exchange them for two of your secrets. Think carefully, oh, if I find your secrets inadequate, I might just leave after hearing them."
Gustavo Flint said with a frown, "That’s not fair!"
"How naive, expecting fairness in a deal?" Parurier said with pride, "In bargaining, the one who reveals their bottom line first will lose. I can sense that you have to know the answers no matter what, while I’m not that interested in your little secrets, so, you’re the one begging me, right?"
This familiar negotiation tactic... Gustavo Flint was eighty percent sure this Succubus worked for Amberser. Could it be that the Lich really resurrected in Hell? Was the leak of the exam questions his way of getting revenge?
But what secrets could he trade for this information, and who could guarantee that the devil would offer the complete truth?
Gustavo Flint simply said to Parurier, "Damn devil, I don’t need your answer anymore. Tell that Lich that I’ll be waiting for him here. No matter our past grievances, I have the right to speak with him face-to-face."
But Parurier glanced at Gustavo Flint as if she hadn’t heard a thing.
"So, you’re giving up on the bargain. Farewell, mortal."
At Parurier’s words, Gustavo Flint was momentarily stunned, then he noticed the Magic Mirror’s image begin to fade.
"Wait!"
All Gustavo Flint managed to say was two words before Parurier completely vanished from the Magic Mirror.
He could only recite the Incantation again, hoping to summon Parurier back.
But this Succubus seemed to have principles; no matter how Gustavo Flint recited the Incantation, she did not reappear.
"Could I have been mistaken?"
Gustavo Flint wanted to convince himself that the devil was playing hard to get and would surely deliver the message, but even the faintest chance of error left him feeling uneasy.
Parurier was right, no matter the cost, Gustavo Flint had to be one hundred percent certain of the Lich’s fate; that was his bottom line he couldn’t abandon, otherwise from today on he would not be able to sleep.
Unconsciously, the influence of the Lich had become so significant that even the slightest rumor could make the president of the Alchemist Association fidgety as ants on a hot pan, completely unable to stay calm.
After trying dozens of times in vain to summon Parurier, Gustavo Flint had no choice but to call over his assistant and have the young man recite the Incantation.
"Magic Mirror, Magic Mirror, tell me."
After the assistant nervously recited the phrase, Parurier’s figure reappeared in the Magic Mirror.
Parurier said to the assistant, "Oh, poor child, if you’re being threatened, just blink, and sister here can help you, for just a trivial piece of your Soul Fragment."
The assistant hurriedly propped his eyelids open with his hands, afraid that an involuntary blink would make a pact with the devil.
Gustavo Flint, however, ignored the assistant’s safety and hastily said, "Never mind that, ask her my previous questions!"
The assistant had no choice but to ask with bloodshot eyes, "Please tell me if you’re working for Master Ultraman and what his plans might be against the Alchemist Association?"
Parurier let out a laugh and simply turned the Magic Mirror directly to Gustavo Flint, saying, "Bargaining with a devil, using someone close as your stake, truly a fine old tradition. But I’m not interested in this child’s secrets, and, unfortunately, I’m no longer interested in yours now."
"What on Earth do you want?!" Gustavo Flint asked.
"I want a soul, of course. Your restless soul, willing to pay any price for the truth, and this child’s terror-stricken soul, too frightened for his future to rebel. Dissatisfaction, fear, and greed, such a complex flavor, I like it. Now, you can choose to sacrifice either your own soul or this child’s, and then I will tell you the answers to your questions.
"So, it shouldn’t be a hard choice, right?"
Parurier’s words sent shivers down the assistant’s spine, who looked at Gustavo Flint in shock, hoping he would firmly reject the suggestion. However, Gustavo Flint hesitated for a moment.
He was truly tempted, after all, it wasn’t his own death, and merely by nodding he could clarify the issues he cared most about. But, after thinking it over, he considered that this assistant indeed did a good job, so it would be a pity to sacrifice him. Just a soul, no need to sacrifice someone close, wouldn’t exchanging a few slaves be better?
