Chapter 175: Why don’t we get married?
After being kissed again and again, Song Chengfeng finally relented and followed Qi Jianyi out of the room. Though he still wanted to stay with her longer, he knew he couldn’t be too wilful. After all, Qi Jianyi’s family was waiting for them downstairs.
"They know about us, so you don’t have to worry that they’ll scold you," Qi Jianyi reminded him gently as they walked down the stairs.
Song Chengfeng only nodded, his hand gripping hers tightly. He didn’t care if the Qi family or the He family disliked him. What mattered most was that they would accept Qi Jianyi into their hearts.
Since Qi Jianyi had told him that he was the reason she chose to come back to this world, he had made up his mind: he would do everything in his power to keep her here and never letting her change her mind.
Back then, he had accepted her choice to leave. But now that she had chosen to return, he would make sure she never regretted it.
He wanted to give her everything, to make her happy no matter what. And if, by chance, both families truly refused to accept her, he was ready to take her away and cut all ties.
His Jianyi could not be wronged—not even a little.
While these thoughts weighed on his mind, Qi Jianyi quietly led him to the dining table. All of her family members were already seated, but it was clear they hadn’t started dinner yet. They had been waiting for them.
Feeling slightly embarrassed under everyone’s gaze, Qi Jianyi’s cheeks flushed pink as she quickly took a seat next to Qi Jinlu. Song Chengfeng sat down on her other side, his face calm and composed which was completely different from the flushed, tender look he had shown on the bed earlier.
"Well, Jianyi and Chengfeng are here. Let’s eat," Grandpa He said gruffly, choosing not to voice his displeasure in front of the food.
Truthfully, the old man wasn’t pleased with Song Chengfeng. Today was his birthday, and he had wanted to spend time with his newly found granddaughter. But Song Chengfeng had kept her all to himself the whole afternoon, and only now at dinner did Grandpa He finally get to see her again.
At first, Grandpa He had genuinely hoped the two of them would reconcile. But who could have guessed it would take until dinner? To him, this Song Chengfeng was still just as troublesome and irritating as he had been seven years ago.
As sharp as he was, how could Song Chengfeng not notice the sharp glare from Grandpa He? But when it came to Qi Jianyi, he had long become shameless. He completely ignored Grandpa He’s stare and started eating as if nothing had happened.
Qi Jianyi, on the other hand, didn’t notice the tense atmosphere between Grandpa He and Song Chengfeng. She kept her head down, quietly focusing on her food. Once in a while, Song Chengfeng would place a piece of meat into her bowl, and she would do the same for him, like it was the most natural thing in the world.
After dinner, Qi Jianyi leaned back in her chair, rubbing her full belly. Turning to Song Chengfeng, she asked softly, "Are you going back?"
Wiping his mouth, Song Chengfeng took a sip of his drink, then calmly shook his head.
"It’s late. I think it’s better for me to stay here tonight." His shameless words caught everyone off guard.
He Zeqing, who happened to be drinking water, spat it out in shock. Even Grandpa He’s mouth twitched as he tried to figure out what to do with this thick-skinned brat.
With a frown, Mr. Qi quickly cut in, "Who said you could sleep here? Don’t you have your own house? Go back!"
Hmph! Want to stay over and sneak into his daughter’s room at night? Not a chance! Not in this lifetime!
Song Chengfeng turned to look at his once-again future father-in-law, but instead of arguing, he pouted pitifully and acted as if he’d been wronged, hoping Qi Jianyi would side with him.
Seeing his silent complaint, Qi Jianyi almost laughed out loud. She quickly hid her smile and gently reached out to hold his hand, trying to comfort him.
"Go home, and I’ll see you tomorrow," she coaxed softly.
The person he had counted on suddenly turned against him! Song Chengfeng froze, stunned, and his eyes filled with clear dissatisfaction.
On the other side, Mr. Qi’s mouth curled into a smug grin. As expected, a daughter was always her parents’ little padded jacket—always warm and reliable. She wouldn’t let them down, unlike his two useless sons who only knew how to cause trouble all day!
"Jianyi..." Song Chengfeng called out softly, his voice carrying an unexpected hint of childish pleading. For someone usually so cold and composed, it was almost unbelievable but maybe only Qi Jianyi could bring out this side of him.
Yet, no matter how cute or pitiful he sounded, Qi Jianyi stood firm in her decision. Even though she really did want to stay longer, to hear more about his life during those seven years apart, she knew now wasn’t the right time.
Not when her family was sitting right there, staring at them.
"I’ll come find you at your company tomorrow, and we’ll have lunch together, okay?" Qi Jianyi coaxed him gently, her voice soft with affection.
Realizing she truly wouldn’t change her mind, Song Chengfeng could only give up for now. But then, a sudden thought flashed through his mind, and before he could stop himself, he blurted it out.
"Why don’t we get married?"
Qi Jianyi froze, stunned by his words. For a moment, the whole room fell silent. Everyone stopped whatever they were doing, eyes wide.
Before she could even gather her thoughts to answer, Mr. Qi shot to his feet, face turning red with fury. With a loud curse, he swung his leg to kick Song Chengfeng.
Unfortunately, he missed, as Song Chengfeng quickly dodged out of the way.
"Marry?!" Mr. Qi’s voice boomed, eyes bulging in disbelief.
"You brat! Get out!" he roared, chasing Song Chengfeng away without mercy.
"Someone, get this bastard out of my sight!" Grandpa He shouted, his voice shaking slightly as he staggered in anger.
At that moment, he regretted letting Song Chengfeng into the house at all. How dare that brat talk about marriage to Qi Jianyi right in front of them?
The housekeeper, caught in a dilemma, hesitated before finally reaching out a hand toward Song Chengfeng, silently asking him to step out.
Finally, Qi Jianyi realized how serious the situation had become. She quickly stood up and moved to block Mr. Qi from getting any closer to Song Chengfeng.
"You! Is marriage something you can just say so casually?" she scolded Song Chengfeng, though her tone carried no real anger—only helplessness.
Then, Qi Jianyi turned to look at Mr. Qi, who now stood fuming, his expression so much like her father.
"Dad..." she called softly, her voice carrying a hint of hesitation. She wasn’t sure if Mr. Qi would truly allow her to call him that. After all, she wasn’t really his daughter by blood.
But contrary to what she feared, Mr. Qi froze, clearly stunned. Hearing Qi Jianyi call him ’dad’ meant more than words—it meant she was willing to accept him and the rest of the family as her own.
"Dad, don’t get angry—it’s not good for your health." Seeing that Mr. Qi didn’t reject her, Qi Jianyi gathered her courage, stepped forward, and gently hugged his arm.
"I’ll ask Chengfeng to go home first," she added softly, guiding Mr. Qi back to his chair. Mr. Qi gave a small nod, accepting her words without further complaint.
It seemed as if all the anger that had built up moments ago simply vanished the moment she called him ’dad.’
Relieved by his reaction, Qi Jianyi smiled and quickly pulled Song Chengfeng out of the room with her.
With her hand firmly holding his, Song Chengfeng followed obediently until they reached the gate outside.
Letting out a small sigh, Qi Jianyi looked up at him, her tone lightly scolding.
"Did you really have to ask me that in front of them? It only makes it harder for them to accept you."
Song Chengfeng slipped his hands around her waist and pulled her closer, lowering his head to whisper against her ear in a calm, almost teasing tone, "So what if they don’t like me?"
"I don’t need their acceptance. Jianyi, I want to marry you," he said, his voice soft but heavy with sincerity.
This wasn’t about tying her down to him. It was about tying himself to her—to be by her side, always.
Qi Jianyi lowered her gaze, lost in thought. Of course, she wasn’t really against the idea of marrying him. After all, she had come to this world for him.
Was it possible to stay by his side yet never marry? Just as Song Chengfeng wanted to promise himself to her, Qi Jianyi too wanted to give him the reassurance that she truly meant to stay and that she wouldn’t change her mind.
"Chengfeng..." She whispered, lifting her head to meet his hopeful eyes.
With that look in his eyes, how could Qi Jianyi possibly find the courage to reject him?
"I want them to accept you," she said softly.
"They are Jianyi’s family and now, they’ll be mine too. I’ll talk to them later, and once they agree, let’s get married, hm?" Her voice gentled even more as she reached out to caress his cheek.
"Until then, can you wait for me, honey?" she coaxed, blinking up at him with hopeful eyes.
She even rubbed her head lightly against his chest in a soft, playful gesture, trying to make him yield.
And truly, with how hopelessly in love Song Chengfeng was with her, how could he refuse? Especially when she called him by a pet name?
"Honey?" Song Chengfeng tilted his head slightly, pretending to weigh her words.
Seeing through his act, Qi Jianyi’s eyes narrowed just a touch. "You refuse?"
Realizing that if he dared say no, she might ignore him entirely, Song Chengfeng quickly nodded, his voice shameless yet utterly sincere.
"I’ll do whatever my wife asks of me," he declared, earning himself a sharp glare.
"Who’s your wife, huh?" she shot back.
"You are! My Jianyi is my wife." He lowered his head, cupping her cheeks in his palms, and kissed her lips tenderly.
"Don’t make me wait too long, Jianyi," he murmured against her mouth when the kiss ended, his breath warm against her skin.
Qi Jianyi, half-amused and half-moved, nodded with a small smile. "Don’t worry. I’ll throw you a grand wedding later," she promised.
At last, Song Chengfeng smiled—truly satisfied by her answer.
"Good! Then I’ll wait for you to propose to me. I’ll bring a big dowry and marry into your family," he echoed, adding his own thoughts, not the least bit embarrassed.
"My family doesn’t need me to carry on the family line. Your family, however..." Qi Jianyi deliberately let the sentence trail off, her meaning clear.
After all, the Qi family still had the twins to inherit the name, but the Song family only had this single heir. How dare this man talk so easily about marrying into her family?
"It doesn’t matter," Song Chengfeng replied calmly, his gaze unwavering. "I really will marry into your family. Our first child will take your surname, and if we have a second, that one can have mine." He had already decided fully, stubbornly, deeply.
Even if his family refused, he wouldn’t waver. Not to mention, they were no longer living in ancient times where continuing the family bloodline was everything, so he didn’t really care whether the child would take his last name or hers.
And so, without knowing it, Grandpa Song—who was still dreaming of holding a great-grandchild—had already lost his only grandson to Qi Jianyi. And General Song had no idea that his only son had so readily offered himself to the Qi family.
"Whatever," Qi Jianyi muttered, rolling her eyes, thinking he was just speaking out of childish spite.
But little did she know, Song Chengfeng meant every single word. In the future, their first child truly did take her surname, making it clear to everyone that he had married into the Qi family.
And the Song family? They would one day chase after Song Chengfeng, threatening to beat him for selling himself out so easily.
But that... was a story for later.
