Chapter 942: Chapter 485: The Nation’s State_3
Ivita shook her head, realizing that the opponent’s hostility toward all Alsasians wasn’t for the mere sake of plundering wealth but stemmed from a certain identity she possessed.
Ivita distinctly felt that something had changed, something that intensified the fierceness of the war.
The wars between nations had been nothing more than conflicts between two interest groups of feudal lords, with soldiers plundering the enemy to make a living, yet most would not kill for the sake of killing.
The nature of war was shifting, turning into a fight between Alsasians and Frankish people, rather than between the feudal lords of Alsace and those of Frank.
Such wars were bound to be far more intense than before.
But for a nation, this was a good thing as it could enhance the allocation of resources.
Ivita sighed, "I know what Pinocchio wanted to give me."
The next moment, five Frankish cavalrymen were horrified to find their horses turning into sand and rapidly vanishing beneath them; then their armor dissolved into foam. They fell to the ground, and their bodies too began to transform into heaps of foam before swiftly disappearing into the air.
"My hand has turned into foam!"
"What in the world are you doing, what thing are you, my head’s turning into foam too..."
"Save me, save me, I have a ten-year-old daughter at home, please spare me, I’m sorry, I know I was wrong..."
Ivita sighed and said to the soldier pleading for mercy, "Is it only now that you remember that you and we are alike as humans, with families and similar ways of life?"
"If only you had remembered sooner, how good that would have been. The outcome you face now is of your own making, so it has nothing to do with me. You have killed yourself, and only you could have saved yourself."
The next moment, this cavalryman completely turned into foam.
Ivita glanced over the people inside the church, whose cheers thundered through the air, and over the hatred in their eyes, frowning but saying nothing.
People have the right to hate their enemies.
National sentiments were growing intensely between the nations of Alsace and Frank. People from one nation saw those of the other as piglets, as vermin, believing themselves to be more noble in terms of bloodlines, culture, and so on.
The God of All Things and the God of All Beasts’ followers might at most differentiate among people based on faith, but generally, they were still trying to pull each other into their own set of beliefs. Overall, everyone still regarded each other as human, belonging to the same species.
Nation-states, on the other hand, differentiated people based on culture and bloodlines—more conservative and divisive than both faith and law, yet it was an effective method to strengthen a nation.
When a nation falls to its nadir, the only thing that can protect it is nationalism.
Any other ideological inclination doesn’t hold as much power as extreme nationalism does in safeguarding a nation.
Ivita suddenly understood why Pinocchio’s master behind the scenes wanted the Frankish people to invade Alsace.
The Frankish people also faced invasion by Brandy and the Champagne United Kingdom; in their moment of deepest despair, they used nationalism to protect their nation and achieved absolute monarchy, regaining most of the power from the nobles.
And now, the person behind Pinocchio wanted to replicate this in Alsace.
In other words, the person behind Pinocchio was trying to spread nationalism in the Magic Black Forest, searching for an alternative to the universal Law.
Nationalism couldn’t be universal; the universal Law was too lenient by nature, essentially benefiting all humanity and was not designed to allow one group to deprive another of its rights.
"Strong nations seek universal Law, influencing all humanity; but a country amidst disasters," Ivita furrowed her brows, "Pinocchio’s master believes nationalism is the only thing that can fortify them. The existence behind Pinocchio seems profoundly dissatisfied with the universal Law and must have been harmed by it significantly, or he would not harbor such ideological tendencies."
"If a nation becomes powerful, it will unconsciously seek universal Law; the person behind Pinocchio must have experienced the extreme decline of a nation, otherwise his stance wouldn’t be so conservative."
