Chapter 732: Chapter 388: The Country Where Death Is No Longer Respected_2
Ivita looked at Knight Robinson. "No, you haven’t. Mr. Robinson, we are heading to the capital of Lombardy, to where the Iron Crown lies. Taking her with us would only lead to her death."
"Although it sounds pitiful, in truth, staying in this lawless port city teeming with people is her only choice."
A look of regret crossed Knight Robinson’s face as he patted the little girl’s head. "You’re right, I didn’t consider thoroughly."
After giving the girl some food and water, Ivita and his party left the port city.
They rented the six finest horses from an inn in the city, replenished their conventional weapons at a blacksmith’s shop, and then headed to the tax station of the port city.
To unravel what happened in this city, they need to go to the capital.
Once they reach the capital, the whereabouts of those inexplicably conscripted but then disappeared soldiers can be easily figured out.
And also why this city lacks the protection of law.
But who would have thought that when they arrived at the tax station of the port city, ready to leave, they found the missing soldiers right there.
The soldiers barricaded all routes out of the port city, not allowing anyone, including the overland traders, to leave it.
Even a great witch, clad in a witch’s robe, blocked the road with a magic wand in hand, seated on a huge rock in the middle of the city gate, not allowing anyone to force their way out.
The businessmen were furious. The majority of them who dealt in vegetable trade stood to lose a hefty sum if they couldn’t leave the city and sell their goods.
Some small-scale vendors even faced bankruptcy.
The businessmen shouted at the soldiers, "On what grounds are you stopping us? Speak up! We’ve never seen you do this before."
"If you don’t let us in, we’ll storm in!"
The Great Witch who was sitting on the rock instantly looked at the man who was suspected of stirring up trouble, confounded his speech with her gaze.
The Great Witch turned to the terrified businessmen and said, "I am not trying to stop you from leaving. The wilderness outside of the city is just too dangerous with the undead insects roaming about."
"If you die out there, it will only make defending our city much harder."
"This city might be one of the last few that can protect you. Please heed our warning."
The eager merchants refused to listen to the witch’s explanations, continuing to berate her, threatening to storm the city themselves if not allowed out.
Those incited by the commotion joined in the cursing of the soldiers and the witch.
Ivita exchanged baffled looks with Hearthstone Witch and Knight Robinson. Insect-people?
How could there be insect-people in the territory governed by the Iron Crown Law?
Ivita said to Hearthstone Witch and Robinson, "Let’s leave the city gates. It seems we won’t even have to pay the entrance tax anymore."
Hearthstone Witch laughed, "A country that is unable to protect its own people has no right to collect taxes from us. It’s they who ought to pay us, seeing as we are going to help them get rid of those monsters."
Ivita shook his head. "The prosperity of the state is strongly linked to its people. A weak state is unable to protect its citizens. In its current state, Lombardy Duchy in name, is virtually nonexistent. The air here is almost devoid of law."
He could even apply the Divine Spring Law here.
Most of the situations Ivita had encountered before involved states and people who, though they had lost order, still fundamentally existed. Such states, despite their chaotic law and order, could easily be reinvigorated.
But the current Lombardy Duchy was more akin to the ruins left by a great war.
The foundations of the state, its laws have been obliterated.
After all, the greatest power in this world is violence.
Knight Robinson expressed some concern. "But didn’t they say we are forbidden to leave the port city, can we really just walk out..."
Ivita waved his hand dismissively.
Hearthstone Witch said to this law-abiding church knight, "What a joke. There is no order here anymore, that witch is just using her personal magic. She can’t stop us."
Ivita and the others strolled through the crowd, arriving at the city gate.
The Great Witch on the rock changed her expression repeatedly as their group approached. She could feel the evil and potent magic emanating from the Hearthstone Witch, sense Ivita’s Light Soul as radiant as the sun, and perceive the destructive force Knight Robinson wielded with every gesture...
The Great Witch immediately understood. Ivita and her five companions were not mediocre individuals.
She, however, was unsure about their intentions entering the country at this time.
The Great Witch on the rock hurriedly told the soldiers, "Open the city gate, let them pass."
After some hesitation, the soldiers began to remove the wooden barricades and opened the city gate.
At this moment, the merchants who had been waiting in line all day took exception when the city gates were swung open for Ivita’s group. They were visibly displeased, and grumbles arose from the crowd.
The Great Witch tried to explain to them, "Each of these six individuals is high-level professionals. They are different from you."
"They have the power to protect themselves."
Most of the merchants fell silent on hearing about the high-level professionals, but a few continued to incite the crowd to assault the city gate.
"Who believes that? Those six individuals must have used backdoors, they might be going into the town to sell their merchandise."
"If we don’t fight for our interests now, we will lose them. Let us together..."
The next instant, that person’s head inexplicably caught fire, leaving behind a phoenix-shaped flame.
To their astonishment, Ivita turned around and casually cast a spell.
The crowd could hardly believe it; they did not expect Ivita to suddenly kill someone.
The guards and the Great Witch raised their weapons and magic wands, ready for battle, looking at Ivita with an uncertain gaze.
The Great Witch swallowed hard; technically speaking, as long as high-level professionals didn’t kill in the open, there would be no trouble.
After all, you need people to report any crime.
But Ivita’s blatant act made it difficult for her to back down.
"Something felt wrong," Ivita said. "Turns out something snuck into the crowd."
A thing?
The Great Witch looked instantaneously towards the decapitated body in the crowd.
A parasitic worm like an iron wire crawled out from the neck of the corpse!
This hit home for the Great Witch. Those who had been stirring trouble all this time and behaved oddly probably had the worm inside.
The wizard was not murdering people, but killing puppet corpses controlled by worms.
The crowd nervously evaded the headless body and the gigantic parasitic worm.
But the parasite couldn’t wreak havoc.
After it crawled out of the body, it spun around on the ground, intimidated the surrounding merchants for a while, then curled up on the ground, bursting into flames and turning into ashes in no time.
Ivita noticed several people among the merchants secretly wiping away their tears, apparently weeping over this.
Ivita pointed them out instantly. "You... You... Come out."
"So you’re not even humans, huh?"
"No need to pretend, my Light Soul can scan your souls; you cannot hide from me."
Seeing they couldn’t hide anymore, the worm-people who hid among humans and had been stirring up trouble unveiled their brutal faces. They growled menacingly at Ivita, "Damned wizard, what’s this to you, why do you have to ruin our plan?"
"These people are all traitors who betrayed the Iron Crown!"
