Chapter 731: Chapter 388: The Country Where Death Is No Longer Respected_1
During the time when the nobles on Cross Island were making a big fuss, Lord Ivita had already embarked on a journey to the Duchy of Lombardy on a twin-masted merchant ship. Accompanying him were the Hearthstone Witch, Knight Robinson, several higher-ranked rangers, a Master Archer, a priest, and ten sailors.
Traveling from Cross Island to Lombardy by ship, even at top speed, took a minimum of three to four days and nights.
On the fourth day, they arrived at the coastline of the Duchy of Lombardy.
Surprisingly, the Lombardy harbor, Mole Harbour, was without any supervision. Ships of various sizes entered the harbour in a very chaotic manner, frequently causing conflicts and even fights among themselves.
In a lawless place like this, the weak would always be forced to yield to the strong.
Ordinary fights often developed into robbery of other ships.
On the deck, the Hearthstone Witch was excited by the sights. Perhaps she wanted to fish and stood on the deck on purpose, letting everyone see the array of magical items and rings she adorned.
However, perhaps it was because their ship didn’t appear to carry any goods, or maybe the witch’s fishing method was too crude, no one tried to trouble them as Ivita’s ship docked at the port.
Due to the absence of harbor officials and soldiers, they chose an arbitrary dock to anchor their ship.
As the sailors were anchoring, Lord Ivita and the Hearthstone Witch cast a United Magic to protect their ship from intrusion and invasion.
Many nearby people, witnessing this, muttered under their breath.
Fortunately, they suspected that something was strange about the ship and chose to observe instead of rashly taking actions, thereby avoiding falling into the trap of the witch on the deck.
After Ivita and his party of five left the ship, instructing the sailors to wait for their return, they began to survey the surroundings from the deck of the dock.
The whole dock was in absolute chaos.
Two men were shouting expletives at each other after a collision, a pickpocket was apprehended and the thief’s small finger was cut off by the fearsome merchant...
Beggars begging for alms were everywhere on the dock.
A pale and emaciated girl, with dirty hands, tried reaching for Ivita’s clothing but was blocked by Knight Robinson. Robinson sternly told her, "You can’t approach this man!"
The young beggar girl pleaded, her voice trembling, "Sirs, could you... could you give me a piece of bread? I haven’t eaten anything for two days."
"The last time I had a drink was three days ago."
Ivita frowned. As a Great Wizard, he could perceive the Law principles flowing in the air, which existed even on Cross Island.
But while setting foot in Lombardy, he was shocked to discover that he could hardly perceive any Law principles here.
A place devoid of Law was the same as disorder.
There were no powers to govern and protect the weak and the commoners.
Ivita asked the little girl, "Where are your parents? Why don’t they feed you? Has anything happened in this country? What’s your name?"
The skinny, pale girl burst into tears, "My name is Elwell. My parents used to be lords, but they were summoned to go to war by the Duke of Lombardy, and they never returned. For some reason, there have been monsters everywhere outside the city since six months ago, and my house was attacked by a bunch of zombies."
Then..."
A puzzled look crossed the faces of Ivita and his party, their eyes filled with sympathy as they looked at the little girl.
No wonder a beggar would dare approach Ivita, someone who obviously held great power and was not a mere merchant, just by the look of his clothes. This was because, compared to commoners, this girl’s subconscious probably trusted more that the nobility would help her.
The Hearthstone Witch, however, showed her no sympathy. Instead, she grabbed the girl’s hair and snarled, "You’re lying. There have been no wars in the Duchy of Lombardy for the past year, nor has it attacked any other country."
"There hasn’t been a war, so how could they be recruiting soldiers?"
"Tell the truth, or I’ll pull your hair out..."
The beggar girl looked terrifiedly at the Hearthstone Witch, her lips turning blue. "No... I only know this much, don’t pull my hair..."
Ivita stopped the Hearthstone Witch, "Stop, she may not be lying. The lack of guards in the entire harbor indicates that this country must be in dire need of an army somewhere."
"It’s not for invading other countries, but to deal with some internal enemies. There’s no Law in this land of Law, indicating that enemies like the Black Death will become even stronger and more ruthless here."
"Give her something to eat and drink."
The begging girl began to feast on the bread and water handed to her by the priest, especially when she found milk and honey added in the bread Lord Ivita gave, which almost choked her.
"Thank you, Lord... thank you all... thank you..."
Tears trickled down the girl’s face.
Knowing her noble status, Knight Robinson showed great sympathy for her. "Lord Ivita, can we take her with us into the depths of the duchy? I think I can take care of her."
