Chapter 629: Chapter 347: Magic Without Limits [Dragon Battle]_1
Atop Dragonbone Mountain, petrified statues of knights and soldiers were scattered, which if not for the faint residual spirits Ivita and the Hearthstone Witch saw encapsulated within them, they would have mistaken them as some form of performance art, an exhibition of statues mounted on the mountain.
However, it was evident that these sculptures were remnants of the army that protected the Frog Princess sixty years ago after they were petrified.
Little had changed here in sixty years.
At the summit, the Hearthstone Witch and Ivita found a golden statue of a male knight. He held a knight’s sword; it seemed like his left hand was pressing something down, while his right was in the motion of swinging the sword downwards. His face wore a pre-victory expression.
It was clear that he had once pinned an enemy beneath him, intending to kill the foe, but he had failed.
The knight had been transformed into a golden statue.
Ivita looked at the statue and said to the Hearthstone Witch, "The residual spirit inside this statue is more powerful than that of an average Great Knight. He must have been incredibly strong in his lifetime. But now, he’s just a golden statue. Can magic turn someone into a pure gold statue?"
The Hearthstone Witch circled the golden statue, observing and touching it to understand it, her face turning increasingly serious with every round. She explained, the color draining from her face with every word,
Ivita frowned. "What is it?"
"What did you find out?!"
The Hearthstone Witch muttered to herself. "Permanently petrifying someone isn’t hard to achieve. Deep study in transformation spells and a high-level witch’s magical power would suffice for permanent petrification. But turning stone into gold... that’s one of the most powerful magics in the mortal world."
"Being able to transform objects into gold means that this witch must already know the Evergreen Magic."
"The Evergreen Magic is a prerequisite for turning stone into gold."
The more Ivita heard, the more surreal it seemed. "Evergreen Magic? What level of magic power is needed to achieve that?"
The Hearthstone Witch swallowed. She told Ivita, "At least Level Six. The Witch Queen, the Duke Witch, and the Witch Princes can do this. As well as the Witch Kings. We’re in trouble. Sixty years ago, there had to be someone as powerful as a Witch Queen on Cross Island, helping Marco Anson and his team to execute their plan."
The Hearthstone Witch widened her eyes. "There’s far more to this than we had imagined."
"Mm," Ivita replied. The thought worried him - they were dealing with a Witch Queen, after all. "But since we’ve carried on this far without her bothering us, we should have nothing to fear."
"Someone always has a benefit in mind when doing something. The Cross Island has nothing to offer a Witch Queen. It might be true that some sixty years ago she had involved herself in something for some reason. But that doesn’t mean that our investigation of the past would annoy her."
It dawned on the Hearthstone Witch. "Of course, compared to what we stand to gain, this seems a trivial risk."
"This is our best chance at the Law, to get a Law that is entirely ours."
"We can take the risk."
"Your Highness, let’s go check that withered spring over there..."
They moved on to the third fountain they had come across on Cross Island, and it was in even worse condition than the others. Almost half of it had been destroyed, making it look almost like ruins.
As they got closer, the fountain emitted a beam of spiritual light. Within the beam appeared a mermaid with a beard like a dragon’s. She was of massive size, but only half of her body was there, and her expression was serious.
"I’ve been waiting for sixty years, and you two, chosen by the Frog Princess, finally showed up," said the Dragon-beard Mermaid in a deep, masculine voice, "I am the Guardian God of Dragon Spring. The three heroes I had chosen, they all died in battles, and they didn’t return the Dragon’s Instrument to Dragon Spring as they should."
"So, I’m afraid I have no power left to choose any more heroes now. I apologize."
The mermaid nodded apologetically towards Ivita.
Ivita waved a hand dismissively. "I’m here to ask you to lift the force blinding this witch by the Frog Princess."
The Dragon-beard Mermaid said in a low voice: "I see, I can just manage to fulfill this request with the power I have left. However, there is one more thing I can give you - the Green Dragon Stick, which represents the Dragon Princess and is the most precious power of Dragon Spring."
Ivita looked up at the Guardian God in disbelief. He had a pretty good idea of what was to come next.
But... surely not?
Ivita turned to the Hearthstone Witch, and found a halo of light had appeared in her eyes, restoring her sight.
The Hearthstone Witch had barely started celebrating before a stick, seemingly summoned from the void, formed in front of her. The two ends of the stick were decorated with dragon motifs.
The stick congealed from illusion to reality quickly and fell into the witch’s hands.
She hadn’t expected the Dragon Spring, which had ignored her like the Holy Spring and the Spring of Power did, would now grace her with its favor.
The Hearthstone Witch initially wanted to refuse the offer. What use could a stick be to her? But as she held the Green Dragon Stick, she felt her magic power boiling with a sudden surge, and she was stunned. "This is a magic wand..."
