Chapter 297: Chapter 194: Thousand-Year Fire’s Plea for Help_2
Maximilian remembered then; the Bearman and the Wolfman were different.
The Wolfman needed a pack of wolves to have the courage to survive, whereas the Bearman lived alone.
These Bearmen, which were like cubs, still listened to his command for now. However, they might not listen to him after some time.
Not long after four Bearmen and one human left, Kristin appeared on the wasteland.
The girl brought with her ten apprentice hunters who were dressed in wolf hides and fox fur cloaks.
Kristin examined the grass on the wasteland and discovered remnants of a fire and footprints of bears. There were also remnants of a honeycomb on the ground.
"Damn it! Maximilian. He has indeed started converting the Bearmen," Kristin said.
"There are signs of Magic around here too, Ivita. You made the wrong choice."
"We must seize this last opportunity to kill Maximilian."
"Success or failure hinges on tonight."
An apprentice hunter suspiciously asked, "Ms. Kristin, why is it our last opportunity?"
"Because there’s a good chance the Hunter Forest will choose to protect Maximilian," Kristin answered. "The Hunter Forest has always served the cities of Ambros. I heard that Maximilian’s father-in-law is now negotiating with the Master Hunters from the Forest on his behalf."
"Once the negotiations succeed, we may have to tolerate the existence of the Black Bearman in Ambros. What’s infuriating is that some Master Hunter thinks that Black Bearman are less dangerous than Wolfman and are even considering using the Black Bearman to guard Marlinna City."
The faces of the hunters turned grim when they heard this.
Typically, hunters were from common backgrounds and had suffered at the hands of non-human creatures. In their quest for revenge, they gained the power of the tiny hunter’s sword.
The professional hunters harbored deep hatred for non-human creatures.
They could not allow the Hunter Forest to ignore the wishes of the average hunters and strike a compromise with a subdivision of the Dark Night Clan due to political reasons.
"Release the dogs. We pursue," Kristin told the hunters.
Among the ten apprentice hunters, five were leading German shepherds.
This was the hunters’ pet ability. Hunters could select certain animals as their allies, sharing their own power with them.
The five German Shepherds, with their keen sense of smell, led the hunters to chase down the Bearmen.
Kristin said, "Keep two dogs at the front. They will go the path which they are likely to take and set up a hunter’s trap there."
It was strange for Kristin to see rain at night when she looked skyward.
The rain could wash away the scent left by the Bearman.
Kristin could not help but frown upon realizing this.
...
In the woods near Kappa Town, surprisingly, the Tide Fishman was choked by the Ashen Man’s left hand. The Ashen Man’s right hand had pierced the left chest of the Tide Fishman straight to the vortex within.
Hugo Russo, along with Francesca and another bald-headed Witch Elder, burst into laughter. "I knew it. The Ashen Man is the perfect counter to this monster."
"Ha ha ha..."
"This Fishman Monster is indeed very tough. I destroyed him multiple times, but he resurrected every time using the vortex connected to the water body. But this time, I used the Aschen Man to attack the vortex and effectively created issues for that Fishman Monster."
"Since it’s like this, we should choose to seal this Fishman Monster."
"Elders, what do you think?"
Francesca replied without any change in her expression, "I would be very happy to do so."
The bald-headed Witch nodded in agreement too.
"Alright, Klauk, you’ve done a good job. Step back, let us seal this Fishman," said Hugo Russo.
Klauk did not move.
Hugo Russo was perplexed, then yelled sternly, "Ashen man, step back!"
Under his commanding order, the Ashen Man, whom he had cursed, let out a painful sound. He tried to retreat, but his hands could not separate from the Tide Fishman’s body.
His lava-like hands were tightly connected to the vortex within the Tide Fishman, as if there was some resonance.
Hugo’s face changed color. "What is that vortex, after all!"
Francesca frowned, suddenly thought of something. If Ivita was an Igniter, then perhaps the fire, which was still flickering 500 meters under the cemetery, was resonating, trying to tell the Igniter something.
She glanced at the irritated Hugo. She could have told him the truth but chose to keep quiet.
Hugo extended his arm towards the sky and an ashen spear appeared in his hand. "Fine, since the vortex stops my Ashen Man from separating, I will have to take matters into my own hands."
To the two elders, he explained, "This is the magic I recently developed, the Twisting Spear. By distorting a part of space, I can obtain an equal amount of magical power."
"The spear has accumulated enough power to destroy this Fishman. All I need is for the Ashen Man to restrain that vortex within the Fishman so that he loses his regeneration abilities, and then I can easily kill the Fishman."
Interval of doubt crossed Francesca’s face and she said, "Wait. Mr. Hugo, isn’t distortion magic a part of Demon power? How did you come to possess it?"
