Chapter 271: Chapter 182: Boots Cat makes an appearance, Gladiator profession, Hunter’s Hunting Arrow (7217)_1

Inside the ballroom, Baron Taketick had tried a few times to strike up a conversation with the Ice Witch, only to be repelled by her formidable gaze.

In the end, he could only resort to approaching Ivita, "My friend, I did not expect your dance partner today to be so special."

"No wonder you seem to be completely indifferent to all the beauties today."

"So that’s why."

Ivita watched as he stubbornly took a seat next to her, feeling quite exasperated. Initially, she thought that maintaining a casual friendship with him wouldn’t be too much of a problem. However, she hadn’t anticipated that this man’s private life was a chaotic mess, and she certainly did not have the time nor patience to entertain him.

Ivita reminded him, "I was under the impression that you were here today as a representative for the Viscount Winchester."

"Well," Baron Taketick replied casually, "While it’s true that it’s my job to seek a union between the Viscount and Jenny’s family, it doesn’t mean that I can’t have a private life outside work."

"The perfection of aristocratic life lies in the fact that social activities carried out by nobles are all beneficial to society."

Ivita nodded slightly.

Whatever you say.

She noticed the chairman arriving with his daughter Jenny. He was evidently aiming to speak with Baron Taketick.

Finally, I can have some peace and quiet.

Baron Taketick also noticed the chairman and his daughter, his expression became serious as he stood up straight.

Clearly, he was aware of the importance of this task.

The chairman glanced at the Ice Witch and Ivita, then turned to Baron Taketick and said, "Baron, if your cousin intends to marry my daughter, when does he plan to marry my Jenny, and what can he provide to ensure my daughter’s happiness?"

Clearly, Baron Taketick had come prepared. With a wink at Jenny, a handsome face and a confident smile, he easily won Jenny’s affection.

Baron Taketick bowed to the chairman and said, "The Viscount told me that his first wife bore him no children and died early. They had practically no marital relationship. Therefore, he will seek the Church’s acknowledgment that there was no marriage between him and his first wife."

"Your daughter will be the Viscount’s only wife."

"And, since we are in a time of war, all matters will be simplified. If possible, the Viscount will be able to marry your daughter next month."

Baron Taketick, aware that the chairman was anxious to wed his daughter off to prevent a curse from coming true, responded promptly.

A smile formed on the chairman’s face.

To him, the fact that the Viscount was willing to do so much for his daughter meant that he was serious about this marriage.

This seemed to be a good choice.

The chairman took Jenny’s left hand and pulled off a ring embedded with sapphire and amber from her index finger. He then handed the ring along with a portrait of Jenny to Baron Taketick.

Jenny exclaimed in shock, "No!"

Ivita understood. This exchange of items was likely a symbol of engagement, signifying that the chairman’s daughter was officially engaged to Viscount Winchester.

Baron Taketick was also starting to smile, feeling a sense of relief. As it turned out, the task wasn’t as difficult as he had imagined.

Jenny’s father was quite understanding. As for Jenny’s attitude...

He was of the opinion that it didn’t really matter.

After all, many marriages among the nobility occur without any emotion involved.

Once acquainted over time, romantic feelings may grow. Even if they cannot bear each other, it doesn’t matter.

The husband and wife can each live their own lives.

A marriage among nobility mainly involves intertwining interests and preserving ancient bloodlines, rather than romantic love between a man and a woman.

Baron Taketick himself was a testament to this. He could have a romantic encounter with any beautiful woman for a night, but he could never marry these women. His marriage was a duty to his family and one of the primary ways he could contribute to his family.

Baron Taketick pulled out a portrait and a ring fashioned from fine steel from his pocket. The decoration on the ring was a small shield.

"This is a portrait of the Viscount himself, and his shield ring. These are personal items of the Viscount, treasures left to him by his mother."

The chairman took the ring and portrait, opening it to take a look.

Ivita saw a man in the portrait. Even though the artist had meticulously embellished it, the man’s old age was evident.

This was a middle-aged man, considerably older, with one eye scarred from an injury, a knife mark apparent across the site. It was unknown whether that had affected his vision.

The artist had tried hard to cover the wrinkles on his face, emphasizing instead the Viscount’s maturity and stability. But compared to Jenny’s petite and innocent appearance, the stark contrast between the two was undeniable.

However, the chairman seemed satisfied and nodded appreciatively. "Jenny, take a look. This is your future husband. The child you bear him will be able to inherit the position of Ambrose Grand Viscount."

As the words left his mouth, the whole ballroom instantly fell silent.

Even though the musicians continued to play and people continued to dance with their partners, the atmosphere had taken a shift.

Another group of unmasked middle-aged and elderly people approached. A shy young man in lantern pants was following them. Ivita, seeing the chairman’s grim expression, knew these people must be the guild leaders of Marlinna City.
