Chapter 163: Chapter 123: Is Law the King of the Country? (5217)_1

The transaction had been completed. Lord Ivita and Lady Alice had signed a long-term cooperation contract between them, with each holding a copy.

Ivita curiously asked, "Just how many cities have experienced successful noble faction rebellions, for the Florcana Republic to be this infuriated?"

Lady Alice replied in a worried tone, "The coup in smaller cities doesn’t really matter."

"The culprits behind the plotting are from several major cities. Among the top ten cities, besides the rebellion in the city of Parviga, another six cities underwent rebellion. Of those, the rebellion in four cities has already been quelled."

"These people must have agreed to act on the same day, to prevent their plot being discovered in advance by the cities."

"However, the city council of Cameron, the tenth-ranked city, and Sachs the seventh-ranked, have both unilaterally declared the dissolution of the noble council."

"Additionally, the newly formed noble council claims it will join the Baron Alliance led by Viscount Winchester."

"They have also announced that for the time being they will cease all city trade, abolish the guild system, and cancel the citizenship of all."

Lady Alice explained, "In the vast western territories of Ambros, most are towns and villages, while the eastern territories are dominated by mountains and plains. The Baron’s territories are dominant there, and it is these Barons who have come together to form Viscount Winchester’s faction."

"Fortunately, the alliance of viscounts tasked with defending Ambros’ eastern border has always maintained neutrality, refusing to join either the city or Viscount Winchester."

Ivita remained silent.

His territory was the protector of Ambros’ western region, while the three Viscounts guarded the eastern region of Winchester.

Both were tasked with guarding the main mountain routes leading into Ambros.

Nevertheless, he recalled Griffin mentioning that the eastern mountain route was more spacious than the one in his own territory. The lands of the triple viscount alliance encompassed vast plains, which were the most crucial paths for the independent viscount of Ambros.

The issues of Ambros hadn’t developed overnight.

A severe split had formed in the economic and social structures of this country’s east and west regions.

This civil conflict had been destined to happen.

Everything was ready, and all that was missing was a capable and heirless muddle-headed monarch.

And the now deceased Grand Viscount--the Mortal King of Ambros--was this man.

The only unknown was the exact role played by the Old Witch’s favorite pupil who was accused of murder. Was she really innocent, framed, or indeed the murderer of the Grand Viscount?

Ivita drummed his fingers against the table. "Two of the top ten cities are under the control of the nobility. The city council of Ambros should be pretty anxious, shouldn’t they?"

"Of course, and if it weren’t for your aid, Parviga would have also fallen under noble control." Lady Alice picked up the teacup handed by the servant and took a sip of the sweet, milk infused tea. "However, I believe the powers of the guilds in those two cities will sooner or later overthrow the noble council."

As Ivita was not too familiar with the situation in those two cities, he made no comment.

Although he had not known Lady Alice for long, their shared experiences of hardship made their current relationship reminiscent of old friends.

Ivita nodded his head, "How come?"

Lady Alice explained, "Because the assistance from the city council of Ambros and Florcana Republic will soon reach those two cities. The noble councils in those cities have inherently weak roots, how long can they hold out?"

"I see." Ivita frowned. "Viscount Winchester was too hasty."

"His sudden planning of the coup seemed to amplify the momentum, but in reality it only stirred up self-preservation among all cities. Even the neutral cities would consequently oppose him."

"However, he can’t gain much benefit from this."

"The cities, which might not have united completely in the beginning, are likely to be forced to react because of this coup."

All of a sudden, Lady Alice laughed, "Ivita, you should worry about yourself too."

"Me?" Ivita asked, puzzled. "Why should I worry about myself?"

Lady Alice nodded, "Yes, you. Even if we did not deliberately publicize you, it’s impossible to keep what happened hidden. Both the city council of Ambros and Viscount Winchester are bound to learn about the happenings in Parviga."

"Soon, you will probably have to make a choice between the two sides."

Ivita kept a stern face in silence.

He had previously ignored the letters from the City Council of Ambros and from Viscount Winchester in an effort to maintain neutrality.

However, he then was still insignificant and no one would pay attention to such a minor character.

After the recent incident in Parviga, he may once again attract both parties’ attention. He did not know what the attitude of the City Council of Ambros and Viscount Winchester would be this time.

Ivita said, "I understand. If there’s nothing else, I will take my leave now."

Before he left, Lady Alice suddenly said to Ivita, "Lord Ivita, there will be a public trial of the traitors by the council tomorrow."

"The court requires thirty of the most respected and prestigious individuals in Parviga to form a jury and participate in the trial of the traitors. You have been invited to be part of it. If you agree to participate, I will send someone to notify you tomorrow and lead you to the Parviga courthouse."
