Chapter 1027: Chapter 524 Enemies and Allies_2
Ivita said, "So, does that mean you can confirm the origin of these assassins?"
The jailer hurriedly shook his head. "I cannot be certain. Your Majesty, although these weapons all originate from the Emperor’s territory, they can be circulated in the market and could have been stolen and sold by soldiers."
Ivita nodded her head.
That is to say, the identity of the assassins could not be confirmed with this alone.
At this moment, under the interrogation of the jailers, an assassin, apparently at his limit, suddenly cried out, "Emperor Aoyue III!"
Then, he bit down hard and committed suicide.
Ivita instinctively wanted to capture his soul and resurrect him, but she found that his method of suicide was extremely advanced. He destroyed his own soul and obsessions so thoroughly that no trace was left.
Ivita raised an eyebrow. Though she was furious with the person behind the curtains, she was not foolish enough to believe that the Emperor had done this.
This behavior also confirmed that there were issues at play.
The Hearthstone Witch screamed, "He had just given up the Emperor’s name, why would he still need to commit suicide? Something’s wrong here."
The Hearthstone Witch saw that one of the interrogated assassins, who was tied up and hanging in midair, had a vacant look in his eyes. She immediately and keenly took control of him with a mind spell to prevent another suicide.
The Hearthstone Witch sneered, "Just search the memories in his head, and we’re done. Ah, Your Majesty..." The Hearthstone Witch paused for a moment, then turned to Ivita. "Your Majesty, there’s defensive magic placed over their minds."
Ivita snapped her fingers. "Now, you can continue searching."
The Hearthstone Witch said admiringly, "That’s really impressive."
Confident, the Hearthstone Witch began searching the assassin’s memories. She was half an expert in interrogation too and was confident that she could extract the memories without losing any details.
But after the search, the Hearthstone Witch froze.
She turned to look at Ivita and Minister Ronan Anderson, who looked eager, and said, "This is too strange. It really seems like these men were sent by the Emperor."
"It’s bad, the memories are self-destructing."
Ivita quickly pulled her back and pressed her right hand onto the forehead of the assassin, who, already showing signs of dullness from being forcefully searched, began to show signs of recovery thanks to Ivita’s subconscious protection of his brain while extracting his memories.
"The Hearthstone Witch, your ability to search memories is too poor. Memories aren’t disposable; we need to verify them multiple times to ensure their accuracy. You can’t just use his brain once and then leave it ruined," Ivita said while simultaneously undoing the magic the assassin had used to destroy all his memories and soul. She then began to explore his memories again, and the face of Emperor Aoyue III appeared high and mighty within the assassin’s recollections.
After confirming several times, Ivita was certain that the memory had not been altered or transplanted. Emperor Aoyue III had indeed given him orders to find opportunities to assassinate either herself or key members of her smaller government.
The Hearthstone Witch walked up beside Ivita, dancing happily. "So, it was the Emperor all along?"
"Ah, I knew he was a bad apple. How could he possibly coexist with you? He killed your kin and played a hand in changing the rulership of Alsace Kingdom!"
Ivita frowned. "There’s absolutely no problem with this memory; this person is indeed one of the Emperor’s men."
"But... why does this seem so odd?"
The Hearthstone Witch said, "These men must have racked their brains to protect the Emperor’s secret. Now that we have direct evidence, it will surely prove the Emperor was the mastermind behind this assassination."
"Your Highness, if you still think there’s a problem, you could let me and you divine again."
Ivita raised her hand and discovered that her right hand disappeared once again for an instant. She shook her head slightly, used three simple divination spells, and broke the magic that obscured divination. The results all indicated that the Emperor was indeed the planner of this assassination.
The Hearthstone Witch then seriously extended her left hand, and the chains binding one of the assassins snapped one after another as he was drawn towards her. The assassin fell into the clutches of the Hearthstone Witch and was gutted in the blink of an eye for her to perform a divination with his entrails.
After the divination, the Hearthstone Witch looked at Ivita and said, "We definitely haven’t wronged the Emperor."
"Your Majesty, there are now two sets of mutually corroborating evidence. This is the work of Emperor Aoyue III, and he even wants to pin the blame on the Kingdom of Frank. Fortunately, we discovered his plot."
"Your Majesty, you are already a recognized prince of the Holy Empire. For the Emperor to assassinate a prince, merely spreading the news would be enough to cause him great distress. His reputation will be tarnished; his prestige significantly reduced than before, and his power clearly diminished. We must make him pay!"
Ivita raised an eyebrow. "Let’s not act rashly for now. The Blue Illusion Witch is The Great Witch; it’s very difficult for an assassin to fully kill a Great Witch. I will revive the Blue Illusion Witch."
Although magic cannot revive the dead, the Blue Illusion Witch was an exception; she wasn’t actually dead but her body was damaged, and her soul had temporarily left its vessel.
Once reaching The Great Witch’s level, it’s very difficult to die easily. Even if one is temporarily killed by someone, a priest must bless both the witch’s body and the place of death to truly kill the witch’s soul that hovers in the air.
However, Ivita was a Wizard; he used magic to kill, so he didn’t need a priest’s help.
The Hearthstone Witch couldn’t believe it. "Your Majesty, you’re just going to let this go?!"
"This is absolutely infuriating!"
Minister Ronan Anderson, feeling a desire to make amends for his past mistakes, said, "Your Majesty, do you think some people are taking advantage of you?"
"My intelligence network can help you verify the master of these assassins once more."
Ivita frowned, and said nothing.
The Hearthstone Witch commanded him, "Then go and do it, remember, I’m only giving you one day. I want results within one day."
Ivita said, "Three days. I’m giving you three days."
After all, if he really gave him one day, the intelligence personnel below might not have enough time and could simply concoct an answer to report back.
Minister Ronan Anderson immediately responded: "I will not fail the mission!"
...
Three days later, Minister Ronan Anderson gave Ivita an answer; the large-scale assassination attempt three days ago was indeed orchestrated by the Emperor.
His men had found several strongholds of the assassins in the Royal Capital, and after investigation, they confirmed these were indeed Emperor Aoyue III’s men.
Ronan Anderson reported to Ivita that Emperor Aoyue III did this because he wanted Alsace to continue to be mired in chaos, rather than recovering some of its national power during the war between the Emperor and the Kingdom of Frank.
Emperor Aoyue III believed that eliminating enemies was important, but it was also necessary to prevent other countries from benefiting as opportunists.
These other countries he referred to included Ivita.
That day, Ivita summoned the Hearthstone Witch and told her about the three visions he saw through top-level divination and the results of Ronan Anderson’s investigation.
Ivita said, "The prophecy tells me that I will be misled by my enemies and attack a temporary ally of mine."
The Hearthstone Witch became alert. "Prophecies can still be erroneous."
"We can’t trust them completely. Besides, the divination didn’t specifically point to the Emperor."
"You mean..."
"What if I allied with other enemies?"
Ivita found it amusing. "You mean to suggest I would form an alliance with the Kingdom of Frank? That... that’s not impossible. Alliances are complicated; anything could happen."
The Hearthstone Witch said, "Your Majesty, all the evidence points to the Emperor provoking you. Your subjects are watching; if you don’t retaliate, they will be disappointed... they might doubt your strength."
Ivita furrowed his brow.
