Chapter 938: Volume 30: The Rise of the Empire, Chapter 9: Ambition

No one knew how the conversation between Tez, Mathew, and Komer continued, but at least Tez and Mathew stayed on.

The two made only a brief stop in Plovdiv before they set sail eastward, stopping in Odessa for a day to inspect the area before they headed straight for the Caucasus. After landing at Bruce Fortress, from Bruce to Banassia to Muscat, and then arriving in Izmir, in Izmir, the two attended a banquet organized for them by some of the Nicosian traders, especially those from Jazair. This occasion also allowed them to understand the living and development conditions of these Nicosian traders in these regions.

Then the two of them took a boat across Lake Niall from Izmir, inspected New Nirel City on the lakeside of Niall, where Half-Beastmen, Barbarians, and Dwarves were the dominant groups, and then traveled south along the canal to reach Galle, the most prosperous port city in the Caucasus. In Mattdam, Tez and Mathew stayed for three full days before finally leaving reluctantly by land to Ugru. Here, the two carefully inspected and understood various aspects, especially the living conditions of the immigrants in the three lands, and then went to Mandu to inspect the training conditions of the Caucasus Army, finally returning to Ugru and having in-depth conversations with Fran, Puber, and others who had already returned to Ugru.

One month later, Tez and Mathew boarded a ship back to Plovdiv from Bahomon, met with Komer once again, and after the two returned to Godeburg, the nobles and gentlemen in the surrounding area of Godeburg soon formally expressed their stance, acknowledging Komer’s official control over the entirety of Nicosia and stating that all the nobles in the Godeburg area would obey the ruling of the newly established state in the future.

Komer knew that Tez and Mathew had thoroughly inspected his entire territory, especially the situation in the Caucasus, over this month. They needed to obtain a concrete assurance, which was that he possessed the strength to contend with the Northern Beastmen; otherwise, they were highly likely to choose Cartin and the Northern Alliance, who were eagerly extending olive branches to Godeburg.

Katya was not content with defeat; the comet-like fall of Hoffman sent shivers down her spine, but she was not willing to exit the stage in such a gloomy manner. Consequently, the Northern Alliance, which was already feeling anxious about the dramatic changes in Nicosia, naturally became her best support.

Komer threw a thick stack of documents onto the desk, thinking hatefully that this bitch was truly unresigned to obscurity and overestimated her strength; at this time, she still wanted to rely on the power of the Northern Alliance to stubbornly resist. She hadn’t even weighed her own importance and already fancied cooperating with the vicious wolves of the Northern Alliance?

The wolves of the Northern Alliance, who devoured their prey without leaving behind bones, would they willingly be used by others? Such good fortune did not exist in the world. Countries like Attica and Knossos, which had long hoped to undermine Nicosia’s position within the Northern Alliance, could not wait for Nicosia to fall apart and decline utterly. Supporting a puppet with some influence but lacking strength to disrupt the situation in Nicosia was the best strategy for them.

And the Church of Light had long been extremely discontented with Nicosia’s secularism and principle of religious freedom. Now having the opportunity to subvert the nation’s faith stance and strike at the increasingly rampant Dark Forces was a double victory.

His plan to peacefully resolve the Romanov family issue had fallen through. Fortunately, he had successfully won over and persuaded Tez and Mathew, two courtiers with significant influence in the era of the old Romanov Dynasty. With the fading of Hoffman, the attitudes of these two men largely swayed the stance of the nobles around Godeburg.

Komer did not have extravagant hopes that the nobles represented by Tez and Mathew would willingly throw themselves into his arms, but he wanted to make it clear to them that now, in Nicosia, only he could save them. Otherwise, should the beastmen unleash their ferocity, Godeburg was highly likely to become the second Jazair. He believed the nobles of Godeburg did not wish to see such a scene. The Northern Alliance, through Katya, would have to sacrifice Nicosia’s interests to win support for her side. Otherwise, why would the Northern Alliance support Katya?

After the trip to the Caucasus, Komer believed that his economic scale and the training system for his army were sufficient to firm up Tez and Mathew’s resolve. Enough to make them believe that only he could stand against the brutal and wild beastmen, while the Northern Alliance merely sought to take advantage of the situation for profit and would never make any sacrifices for Nicosia.

They also firmly believed that no matter what, he was still a Nicosian, and those barbarous tribes were merely stepping stones at his feet. When choosing between barbarians and mortals, he would always choose mortals in the end. "He who is not of our race is sure to have a different heart." This saying was deeply ingrained in the minds of Tez and Mathew, and Komer was not quite ready to let them understand that this saying did not apply to him.

The current situation is precariously balanced. It is said that the Beastmen are tirelessly pursuing their assimilation policy, hoping to establish a harmonious kingdom in the north of the Kingdom where Beastmen and Mortals can live together in peace. Meanwhile, Katya is wholeheartedly clinging to the Northern Alliance, hoping to use its power to help her regain her influence. And what about myself?

Komer contemplated silently. The situation in Caucasus was stable as Mount Tai, with the public wholeheartedly supporting him. The state of affairs in Poznan was relatively stable under Renta’s control and was gradually developing in a way that was favorable to him. The commercial powers in the central and southern regions of the Busen Plain, represented by Odessa, had started to lean towards him, while the central-western regions, represented by Plovdiv, were still undecided but had temporarily submitted to his martial power. As for the north, led by Cyprus, they were still adopting a policy of non-violent non-cooperation, but Komer believed they could no longer stir up any significant trouble.

Silesia and Galle had already expressed their submission, which made Komer feel a bit troubled about how to deal with these two areas. For now, Galle would have to be spared; it was not wise to engage in a head-on clash at this time. Once he had completely brought the regions around Godeburg under his control, he was not afraid that Galle could flee to the heavens. Silesia, however, was a must-capture for him; although Nissa had shown enough sincerity, the arrow was already on the bowstring and had to be released. Being soft-hearted now would only bring endless trouble later. Komer certainly did not want the situation of the Great Lords during the Romanov Dynasty era, where the tail wags the dog to appear in his future territories. If he did not take this opportunity to completely eradicate the roots of the Ferdinand Family, it would only breed future calamities.

But it wasn’t quite appropriate for Silesia to simply repeat the Poznan scenario. The Ferdinand Family did not possess many assets or colonies on Mang Continent. Perhaps relocating the Ferdinand Family to Caucasus Ugru would be a good choice, even though it might provoke resistance and opposition from the Ferdinand Family. However, under the pressure of his formidable martial power, if the Ferdinand Family did not wish to be wiped out completely, they would have to submit.

Of course, to peacefully convince the Ferdinand Family to accept this "suggestion," he would need to make some concessions, such as retaining all assets currently owned by the Ferdinand Family, and even providing compensation for their ancestral lands in a certain manner. Only by doing so could he maximize their acceptance of this "suggestion."

Ugru needed the settlement of such wealthy magnates; a large influx of affluent immigrants could greatly promote local economic development, stimulate investment, and boost consumption. Even a bunch of parasites that only consumed resources could drive the consumption of luxury goods in the region. After all, Ugru had plenty of lands, and a population comprised mainly of mixed races didn’t need to worry about being coerced or incited by these foreigners.

As his territory’s central hub in the south, Ugru still wasn’t enough with just the upper echelons of the immigrants from the three lands. To build Ugru into a political, economic, and cultural center of the south, relocating those nobles who weren’t quite suitable to stay in their native places to Ugru seemed like an excellent choice. If Cyprus and its cohort continued to pose and alienate themselves from him, Komer did not rule out adopting a similar policy in Cyprus.

Everyone was waiting; he was waiting for the situation to stabilize further, while Katya was waiting for further support from the Northern Alliance, and the beastmen were also waiting for their position in Jazair to become more secure. But who stands to benefit more from this waiting?

To regain power, Katya could prompt the jackals and wolves of the Northern Alliance to confront him, so it seemed he could also pull in his neighbor Basarabia, the much-praised Skylark, which apparently wasn’t all that unseemly, into the mix. With Basarabia’s support in some aspects, he wouldn’t need to bear so much pressure.

Divide and ally seems to be an everlasting strategy, but how to execute it is a matter of individual tactics.

With a soft sigh in his mind, Komer wondered if he was being too greedy. The south with Flanders and the Southern Mediterranean, the Storm Ocean with Demisheme, and the entire Nicosia in the north – all seemed to drag him into their web. Where was the end of his desires? Where would his gaze turn after conquering Nicosia?

Komer didn’t know. (To be continued, for what happens next, please visit www.qidian.com. There are more Chapters, support the author, support authorized reading!)
