Chapter 937: Volume 30: The Emergence of the Empire, Chapter 8: Exposed
"Your words are too harsh," Komer replied, his face devoid of indignation, a faint smile still present. "The reason I invited both of you here has nothing to do with personal feelings. I would not lie in the presence of the Mortals. With the current situation in Nicosia so chaotic, as a part of Nicosia, I feel that both myself and you two have a duty to step forward to clarify the situation and to contribute towards a better tomorrow for Nicosia."
Hearing the other party’s shameless remarks, Mathew felt a sense of frustration. This man had the gall to speak as if he were a great person concerned for all, his shamelessness was unprecedented. He did not even feel ashamed of his unprincipled and aggressive actions. Mathew thought that it takes someone quite unique to compare. But victors write history, and since he had succeeded, such words could no longer be considered an overstepping of bounds.
Tez watched with a smile as his old friend sparred verbally with Komer. He had long since learned of Komer’s cunning and astuteness. Mathew would never gain the upper hand in a battle of wits against him. However, their visit that day was not intended for a verbal duel; they had come with different intentions in mind.
Nicosia had been in decline for far too long. Since the Romanov family had lost the qualification to revitalize Nicosia, Tez and Mathew were not narrow-minded men. If there truly was a suitable candidate, they would not hesitate to offer support, provided this person aligned with their ideas. Though Komer appeared excellent in many ways, it was precisely because his unexpected and exceptional approach always caught people off guard that Tez and Mathew harbored doubts about him. Upon receiving Komer’s invitation, they did not hesitate to accept. They needed time and opportunity to closely observe what kind of man he truly was, whether he was an arrogant fool with great ambition but little talent, or a practical, far-sighted person destined for success. This was the purpose of Tez and Mathew’s visit.
"Really? It seems that Lord Komer harbors aspirations of great concern for state affairs. However, I fail to understand how the chaos of today is not the result of Lord Komer’s own making. Why then does Lord Komer put on the pretense of pitying the common people?" Now that all pretenses had been dropped, Mathew had no reservations, his words directly addressing the topics Komer could not avoid. "Has the Romanov family truly become so depraved that it falls to Lord Komer to bury them?"
Komer found it rather interesting that General Mathew, known for his military talent, also possessed such a gift for speech and did not shy away from embarrassing topics, practically accusing him to his face of being a national traitor. Arguing with such a person was truly inspiring for Komer’s own thoughts; surrounded by flattery all day long, his thinking had almost come to a standstill.
"General Mathew, how do you view the beastmen invasion? Do you believe that, given their current way of life in the northern part of the kingdom, the kingdom will completely assimilate them, or are we waiting to be transformed by them?" Komer countered with a question.
After a brief pause, Mathew cautiously replied, "It’s probably difficult for either side to conquer the other. The beastmen will to a large extent assimilate the advantages of our civilization, but their defiant and violent nature is likely not something that the civilization of us Mortals can subdue. To truly win their allegiance, I’m afraid it would take an irresistible Martial Power for them to understand."
"Then, given the current strength of the beastmen, do you think Nicosia has any hope of driving them back to the Mogan Wilderness? They are maintaining relative calm now, do you think they will keep this up, or that they will remain satisfied with the status quo and not launch further attacks on us?"
Mathew was silenced by Komer’s two questions. Although he had no fondness for Komer, he had to admit that even the united Nicosia under the former Romanov Dynasty had not achieved this, let alone the now fragmented Nicosia. If there truly was hope for this, it would probably only come from the man before him. However, that would require Komer to attain even greater Power, and that was not what Mathew truly desired in his heart.
More importantly, the beastmen were no longer the shortsighted and fickle creatures of the past. They had undergone a sudden metamorphosis, their mindset making a qualitative leap. This was evident from their occupation of Jazair and subsequent steadfast hold. The current calm was merely an illusion. They would not remain tranquil indefinitely; they were never the kind to be content in obscurity. This tranquility was only to prepare for a better opportunity, to gain more sufficient Power. Looking at their performance in Jazair, they were absorbing the essence of Mortal civilization while cleverly creating a reality that gradually made the numbed Mortals acknowledge and adapt to this mixed living situation, achieving a subtle change—a situation that Mathew and the others absolutely could not tolerate.
"Mr. Tez, Mr. Mathew, we all know the answer. I do not expect to gain everyone’s support, and I am aware that many people reminisce about the good times under the Romanov Dynasty. However, we can see that the Romanov Dynasty’s last glories are past, and what remains are ruins and desolation. I cannot tolerate the beastmen standing on the foundation of our civilization to build their edifice, nor will I allow foreign powers to strut on the soil of Nicosia. Nicosia belongs to us Nicosians—a view I believe both of you will agree with. That is why I have decisively come forward."
Komer appeared very natural and magnanimous. He did not conceal his ambition and Desire. To win the support of these two men, it was better to openly express his thoughts, "I also do not deny that I am pursuing greater authority because only with greater Power can I wield more force, and only then can I have the means to fulfill my dream. I believe that as long as my dream does not conflict with your thoughts, with your character, you two should support me in achieving something that does no harm to ourselves and benefits others."
Both Tez and Mathew were stunned by Komer’s forthright speech, taking on the responsibility owed to the entirety of Nicosia in place of the Romanov Dynasty—a sentiment many had thought and acted upon, but no one dared to express openly. Yet, this man brazenly revealed it. Nicosia was not the Cordillera Wilderness or the Mogan Wilderness, where Martial Power could decide everything. It was the seat of Mortal civilization, passed down through generations. Whether he was mad or confident in his actions was debatable. (To be continued.
