Chapter 907: Volume 29, Distant Sword Qi, Chapter 1: Sky Wolf_2

The sinister and dark words barely left his lips when Callum Wolfe and Macbeth Dior were already so frightened that they were crawling on the ground, shaking uncontrollably, "Boss, we have no dissenting intent; we only wanted to secure for our brothers a bit of what rightfully belongs to us."

These words were an accusation to the heart, by heaven and earth, Callum and Macbeth never had such thoughts, nor did they deserve such an accusation. As the second-largest clan in the Beamon Kingdom, the Chief position of the Wolf Clan was not one that just anyone could sit in. When Carter Wolfe first took that position, he did so standing on the skeletons of three or four of his cousins, and similarly, the previous Chief of the Deer Clan fell to Carter’s Skywolf Gun out of a dispute over stands; and even now, every time Macbeth sees Carter’s Skywolf Gun, he feels a subconscious chill at the bottom of his heart.

Seeing Callum and Macbeth both kneeling on the ground, the other Wolf Clan senior members quickly followed suit and knelt, all except for one person, Fuerhaus, Carter’s most trusted man and Corps Commander of the Skywolf Cavalry. He clearly had not been involved in this matter and, though a little uneasy, he seemed to be keeping his composure.

"Really? Can I believe your words?" Carter knew full well that even with several doses of courage, these two men would not dare to harbor such thoughts. Callum, although brave and fierce, with some renown within the Wolf Clan, lacked the cunning, even less so than his third brother Callan, and had always been loyal to himself, as for Macbeth, he had been his ironclad ally whom Carter personally supported to ascend as Chief of the Deer Clan. However, this event greatly embarrassed him, especially in front of Christina, which was why Carter was so infuriated and ashamed.

"Boss, please see the truth of the matter."

"Do you even regard me anymore? Or the kingdom’s laws?" Carter struggled to control his emotions, his voice nearly bursting from between clenched teeth, "The law forbidding plundering outside has been published among all tribes, so why did you ignore it? Are you deliberately trying to make a fool of me in front of them, to make me look bad?"

"Boss, it’s not that we don’t follow the law, but you also have to consider our brothers below. The Tiger Clan, the Bear Clan, and the Cow Clan take their places at the back during battles, but they are not slow in taking the spoils. Most of the good stuff in Jazair City was taken by them, leaving only the poor, and now they want to treat mortals equally, but what about our brothers? We lead the charges, but we end up with nothing; how do you expect the brothers to go into battle without even a bit of spoils? How are we supposed to fight the next time?"

Callum, his voice overlapping with laments and grievances, continued, "Besides, we didn’t plunder within the lands controlled by the kingdom, we just went to Silesia and Galle to catch a little windfall, so how did that vex anyone? In our opinion, the northern part of Galle should have been conquered long ago. Just give us control of Cologne City in the north of Galle, and we guarantee no more outings. Who doesn’t want to stay at home and relax? They think we go to war because we have nothing better to do?"

Macbeth hastily agreed, "Yes, Boss, there’s also quite a disagreement within our Deer Tribe. I’ve already complained to you about it last time, but merely enduring this isn’t a solution. The brothers are very upset. The Tiger Clan, Bear Tribe, and Cow Tribe are living the good life while we also need a way to survive, right? Even the Leopard Tribe and Sheep Tribe are able to bask in their reflected glory, surely our Deer Tribe can’t just wait to starve?"

Carter’s expression was stormy, he was of course keenly aware that his Wolf Clan was dealt a bad hand in the distribution of spoils from Jazair last time. He had thought they could make up for it during the looting of the cities, but to his surprise, Christina’s policy of peaceful coexistence had won support from the Tiger Clan faction, putting an end to the plans for plundering the common mortals. As Christine’s staunch ally, he couldn’t fail to support her, and this put the naturally non-agrarian Wolf Clan at an even greater disadvantage. His subordinates were very restless and without a practical solution, his position as Chief would be difficult to hold. He had thought that turning a blind eye to his subordinates’ minor skirmishes in the surrounding region would suffice, but this time, Callum and Macbeth had launched large-scale assaults on Silesia and Galle, making such a racket that it was impossible to cover it up.

"Brother, what’s done is done, Shami and the others understand our predicament; do they really have to be so relentless? We were driven to this. I’ve always believed that Galle and Silesia could be effortlessly seized, with the armed force of the Beamon Kingdom as it stands now; seizing these wealthy regions isn’t an issue at all, so why should we be so hesitant?" Callum seized the chance to speak up, "Once we’ve taken these regions, distribution within the kingdom will ease up a lot. Those mortals who wish to stay could, as per Christina’s wishes, coexist peacefully just like in Jazair City, and those who have fled, naturally, their lands would be left to our Beamon people. Why not seize this opportunity?"

Carter shook his head. Deep down, wasn’t this what he desired? But according to Christina’s vision, relations between mortals and the Beamon Tribe within the kingdom’s control had just begun to warm up. The Beamon had much to learn from the mortals, and only by integrating into the civilization established by mortals, fully absorbing the essence of mortal culture, and standing on the shoulders of giants, could the beastmen quickly break free from the shackles of ignorance and barbarism. Only then could the Beamon truly claim a prominent place among the mainstream races of the Blue Continent and even become leaders. To now jeopardize the long-term plan for short-term gain would be to kill the goose that lays the golden eggs. Even Carter himself found this perspective somewhat faint and distant, and it was uncertain if Bill and Mouni would understand or believe it, let alone convincing Callum and Macbeth, which would likely be easier if he just gave them direct orders to obey.

"Boss, what’s done is done. How they decide to handle this will have to be determined at the Leader Conference. I think Miss Christina is just in a temper right now. At that time, it will all depend on your smooth talking. As long as Miss Christina supports us at the Leader Conference, the Tiger Clan will have to think twice before causing trouble. We’ve reaped a considerable bounty this time, and the brothers are all waiting for your word. We’ve already exchanged these items for gold and are just waiting for you to divide it up. Why not prepare a share for the Fox Clan as well?"

Macbeth’s mind was already set on the distribution of this wealth, for to him the troubles would fall on the Boss to shoulder. The Leader Conference, where underlings and Tribe Chiefs are not qualified to attend, wouldn’t involve him. As long as the Fox Clan firmly stood by the Wolf Clan, there would be no major trouble for them.

With a sigh that spoke volumes, Carter felt exasperated. With such simple-minded fellows creating problems, relaxing was impossible for him. Now, he needed to face the recriminations from the Tiger Clan, and stabilizing the situation to make gradual progress was the principle agreed upon at the Leader Conference, including by himself. Now, he was essentially slapping his own face. Though there were grievances, a violation was a violation. The Beamon Tribe didn’t need any objective reasons for their explanation. His immediate concern was how to handle this issue, as for this bunch of fools, there would be plenty of opportunities to teach them a lesson in the future. (To be continued...
