Chapter 875: Volume 27: Sudden Gust, Chapter 14: Despicable Genius
Feuerbach? This seemed to be a surname, and Komer’s attention began to focus. Suddenly, he seemed to recall something, "Mr. Feuerbach, I wonder if you have any special relationship with the most famous arsonist in history from over a hundred years ago?"
Machette•Feuerbach, the most infamous arsonist on the Blue Continent, was imprisoned in the notorious Prison of Solitude—the Bash Hell—after he had sexually assaulted several noble women. By some chance, he obtained fire magic materials and created a super Fire Magic tool—the Dragon Flame Wind Column. How exactly he acquired and made this terrifying Fire Magic tool was a mystery, but it was indeed he who manipulated the Dragon Flame Wind Column to engulf the entire Bash Hell in flames, and even the most renowned Shangri-La Castle nearby was reduced to ashes, leading to Duke Malington, who was famed for loving scenery more than Jiangshan, vomiting blood in great amounts and dying without recovery.
"Hehe, I didn’t expect even Lord Komer to know of my ancestor’s great deeds. Machette is my great-grandfather. I am honored to accept your invitation," the man said with a noble’s etiquette, but it came off as sleazy when performed by someone with a goat head.
An offspring of a once promiscuous lunatic and serial arsonist? Komer didn’t know what purpose this so-called alchemist, introduced to him by Karmani, had in mind. Could this man really be a genius in some respects?
"Oh, Mr. Feuerbach, I didn’t expect that in your generation you have already switched professions. Alchemist seems like a more fitting title for you," said Komer insincerely, "It seems, Karman, that you have brought me a friend who is very much looked forward to."
Karmani seemed to pick up on the underlying tone in Komer’s words and hurriedly said, "Lord Komer, Mr. Feuerbach is the greatest alchemist I have ever met. He has a wealth of experience and unique insights into the smelting and refining of Magic Metals. I believe he will be of great help to you if he can serve you."
The man arrogantly raised his head, like a rooster flaunting its plumage, and Feuerbach’s image in Komer’s eyes became even more repugnant. Komer scrutinized the man for quite a while before slowly saying, "Mr. Karmani speaks so highly of Mr. Feuerbach, I wonder if Mr. Feuerbach would indulge my curiosity and share some of the experiences he’s had before coming to Our Caucasus?"
Karmani also sensed an unusual undertone in Komer’s words and became anxious internally. It was true that Feuerbach was a genius, but his bad character was hard to conceal. Karmani was also aware that the man had inherited his great grandfather’s traits; his lust for women was insatiable. In previous employments, he had repeatedly caused troubles; he liked women but lacked the finesse to attract them. Looking at his countenance, it was indeed hard to win over women’s favor. To get a woman, he would either assert himself forcibly or resort to despicable methods, such as using aphrodisiacs or intoxicating perfumes.
"Oh, Lord Komer, my life experiences are plentiful; even speaking for three days and nights non-stop wouldn’t cover them all. If Sir really is interested, perhaps we could find some leisure time to drink and discuss these matters at length," the goat-headed man said with a smug smile that Komer found even more contemptible.
"Is that so? Where have you held high positions before, Mr. Feuerbach?" Komer asked casually.
"Hehe, I’ve been to many places. I’ve had brief stays in several countries of the Northern Alliance, but I don’t like the atmosphere there; too solemn and rigid for my taste, which I find oppressive. I’ve also stayed in the Nebuchadnezzar region, but the lords there were too stingy, hard to get along with; the city-states in the South, I’ve visited, but they lack opportunities for me to showcase my talents. I really did like it there—the women are passionate, lively, and generous, invoking fond memories, just a pity..."
"Just a pity what?" Komer asked with some surprise.
"Heh heh, just a pity that I’m short of money, and it was hard to maintain a living," Feuerbach didn’t hide his situation at all.
Komer began to feel a slight softening toward the man, for at least he seemed unpretentious and fairly forthright; but the prospect of a descendant of a notorious sexual predator and arsonist staying in his territory was disconcerting, not knowing what troubles might arise. Yet seeing Karmani’s eager demeanor, Komer guessed the man must indeed possess some talent. The scale of extraction at the Izmir Mine was set to expand further, and the mining and refining of associated Magic Metal ores were about to enter the agenda. Komer realized this endeavor indeed required someone skilled in this area to undertake it.
"Mr. Feuerbach, I do not wish to mince words. Karmani invited you on my behalf, and I assume you know the reason. My territory requires a reliable alchemist to assist with the work in the mines. Uh, the main goal is to smelt and purify magic metal. I trust you understand my meaning?" Lord Komer said, fixing his gaze on the other party. "But as you know, Caucasus is land filled with fierce customs and a diverse array of races; conflicts are easily amplified. I hope the person I hire will abide by the rules and not bring unnecessary trouble upon me, otherwise there are some issues that even I may not be able to resolve."
"Heh, Lord Komer, rest assured, I am absolutely a man of rules and discipline. My purpose in coming to the Caucasus is simple: to make money. As long as you can satisfy me on this point, there will be no problems," replied the man with the goat head, his gaze calm and steady. This moment surprised Komer; the fellow wasn’t as filthy as imagined.
Nodding emphatically, Lord Komer casually took out two pieces of ore from a pouch beside him and tossed them to the other party, "Tell me, what’s inside these two stones?"
Catching the ores, the man with the goat head instantly became serious. He knew this was a prerequisite for securing satisfactory income. If he couldn’t give a satisfactory answer, his long journey here might end without a pleasant result. With his notorious reputation, finding a satisfying place to stay wasn’t easy. If it weren’t for Lord Komer’s urgent need for someone, Karmani probably wouldn’t have taken the risk of recommending him.
The two stones appeared ordinary at first glance. The goat-headed man didn’t stand on ceremony, but instead sat down with a flop, whipping open his wide robe. Suddenly, he pulled out a gigantic storage bag from around his waist. He plunged a bird claw into it and fumbled around before pulling out a slender, sharp, hollow awl, which he carefully used to grind into the first ore. Soon, the awl penetrated the center of the ore. With great care, he extracted some stone powder from the hollow part and poured it into a metal vessel pulled out from his pocket, seemingly completing the first part of his work.
Several peculiar bottles also emerged from the bag, the liquids they contained being poured into the vessel one after another. With each pour, the man with the goat head observed attentively for a while, then took out a roll of parchment to make some notes, until at last, he pulled out a small liquid fuel stove and placed the metal vessel on top.
With a simple flick of his fingers, a faint green flame ignited over the stove. Komer’s mind stirred; this was the Infinite Yin Ming Fire. Amid the dark green, a sliver of purple-black hinted at its presence. Such a flame was hard to accomplish purely through elemental mana—could this man have a dark background?
Lord Komer observed quietly, noting that the man indeed seemed to have some genuine capability. The apparently professional technique he exhibited wasn’t something any charlatan could replicate. Releasing Infinite Yin Ming Fire effortlessly was something Komer could do as well, but to control the flame so precisely required some proficiency in Fire Magic.
The pale green flame gradually turned crimson. Komer silently nodded in approval; this was the Solar Flare, the fiercest heat a flame could muster, achievable only with the release of pure fire elemental energy. He couldn’t discern what changes the ore powder in the metal vessel was undergoing, but seeing the man so diligently noting things down, Komer figured that there must be some findings.
The crimson flame slowly turned to a silver-white transparency, growing slightly higher. Komer, stroking his chin thoughtfully, was impressed. Not to mention other skills, just by demonstrating these few Fire Magic techniques before him, the man had already passed the first test. This was the Infinite Light Fire—a high-grade Fire Magic composed of pure Light Magic power mixed with a touch of fire element, something that ordinary Light Mages often struggled to perform perfectly. Whether or not the man was showing off, this alone was sufficient.
Eventually, the flame dimmed and finally extinguished. The goat-headed man’s eyes, resembling those of a goat, watched the substance within the metal vessel change, made some final notes, and finally raised his head with a touch of pride. "Lord Komer, given the limited conditions and time here, I was only able to conduct some simple tests, but there is indeed some progress."
"Oh? You’ve piqued my interest, Mr. Feuerbach. Please, do tell us more," Komer said with a twinkle in his eye.
"The primary component of this ore is naturally iron, with a high concentration that suggests it is quite high-quality iron ore. But I believe this is not what Sir is interested in. Indeed, this ore does contain a rich variety of magic metals. Note, I am speaking of a range of types, which is quite abundant. I can preliminarily determine that it contains at least three types of magic metals. To my knowledge, such a composition is rarely seen on the Blue Continent. Perhaps it would be more acceptable if it were on the vast Continent," the goat-headed man spoke with ease, his goatee twitching as he spoke. (To be continued.
