Chapter 870: Volume 27: Sudden Gust - 9: The Door is Already Open_2

"So, how is it, Rebry? How does it feel to be imprisoned?" Komer finally drained his cup of coffee, a meaningful smile playing on his lips.

"The taste is exquisite," Rebry replied with a faint smile. "To have such an experience in life is enough to boast about to the younger generation."

"Haha, it indeed is an experience worthy of boasting, practicing within the Religious Court’s prison tower is not something just anyone can qualify for," Komer laughed as well.

Mihailovich joined in, "Rebry, I feel that this experience has been quite beneficial to your practice. Your current state is vastly different from over a year ago. Can you tell us any exciting stories from within the prison tower?"

"There is nothing particularly exciting. Noyola and Lorenzo are clear that if a person’s mind and faith have already shifted, it is delusional to think that they can be persuaded by mere verbal arguments. Unfortunately, I am one of those people. They understood this many years ago. The reason they imprisoned me instead of sending me to the burning stake is probably to use me as a living propaganda to show off, especially to those they consider heretics, in their eyes. But I think it will only backfire," Rebry appeared detached, showing little sadness or dissatisfaction with his time in prison.

"Then it seems you have been living quite comfortably here, haven’t you?" Komer teased. "You look as if this misfortune has turned into a blessing as if you might have jumped straight into the realm of a Magic Instructor."

"Well, you try it, and maybe after a few years in the prison tower, you too can transcend and become a Great Mage," Rebry retorted but didn’t deny the probing nature of Komer’s last remark.

"Hmm, alright, as long as you have returned, it’s a blessing from the Church of Light that Our Caucasus-Homer United Mage Corps could receive such a training opportunity. Now, Newman, Flamengo, and Solka are diligently practicing. Giovanni and Konti have also gained much insight; they have each entered their practice rooms to contemplate the enlightenment received from this ordeal. Such an opportunity doesn’t come easily to anyone. I’m also well aware that my spiritual confrontation with Michelangelo is equivalent to a year of solitary exploration. I didn’t expect Michelangelo to have such profound spiritual practice. My Dark Erosion had broken his mental defenses when he was vulnerable, but that man was able to keep the cracks from spreading, which is nothing short of a miracle."

Komer seemed to immerse himself in the reminiscence of that war, his expression changing with his feelings of insight, astonishment, and experience. For a practitioner who had advanced to a higher level, a well-matched fierce battle was undoubtedly a stairway—how to use this stairway to reach higher realms depended on the practitioner’s insight.

"How are Solonberg and Vladimir Koff doing?" Rebry nodded and asked casually.

"Solonberg is currently healing his internal injuries while meditating. This battle should greatly help the integration of his Frost Fighting Qi with magic. Vladimir Koff is also impressive; his Dark Fighting Qi erupted to the extreme, which is invaluable for breaking through the plateau. Next time he faces a Heavenly Knight, he shouldn’t be so embarrassingly outmatched," Komer said with a smile. "I’ve told them that the challenges ahead will only get more and more difficult. As long as they aren’t afraid to challenge themselves, I believe the Church of Light will have more stepping stones to pave their way."

The conversation seemed to touch on something within Rebry. A thoughtful expression crossed his face, and his gaze became somewhat scattered. After a while, he gathered himself again, "Komer, are you really prepared to keep going like this?"

"Do I have a choice?"

Rebry was taken aback for a moment, a bitter smile tugging at his lips, "Yeah, now nobody has a choice anymore, including myself, right?"

"Even if there was a choice, I would still choose this path. There originally is no path in the world; if someone walks one, then it naturally becomes a path, doesn’t it?" Komer responded with a statement rich in philosophical significance.

The meaningful words touched Mihailovich deeply. Two people defying the heavens had dragged him into their whirlwind, but it seemed that defying destiny was also a fine path to take. After all, in one’s lifetime, one should always do things worth being remembered by posterity, and that one is willing do. Such pursuits are rare, and aren’t we exactly on that path right now?

"How do you plan to proceed?" Rebry no longer played word games but asked directly.

"To swallow whole or nibble away, it all depends on the situation. The foundation of the Church of Light has already been greatly shaken. Even if we do not shake them, the Salvation Society will eagerly challenge them. Why not use this opportunity?" Komer pondered for a moment before responding.

"Do you think the timing is ripe now?" Rebry frowned.

"Hmm, not quite ripe yet. I still have some matters to sort out," Komer did not attempt to conceal anything.

"The Dark Holy Church?"

"Hmm, Xerob and his men are making relatively smooth progress in the South. City-states such as Piraeus and Tilo have begun to fall within our sphere of control. Some other city-states and realms are also evolving in that direction. I haven’t paid too much attention, as Xerob has been doing very well. This guy’s vision and skills have exceeded our expectations. However, up until now, he hasn’t encountered any substantial opponents. Maybe when the Dark Holy Church begins to infiltrate the Central Region, he will encounter some trouble," Komer nodded in agreement.

"Indeed, the influence of the Church of Light on the Southern Coast is relatively weak, but the closer one gets to the Central Region, the stronger the Church of Light and the forces that are in line with it become. That area is Frenster’s base and sphere of influence; that’s where Xerob will meet his opponents," Rebry agreed with Komer’s point of view.

"Between Frenster and Vazinsky, who do you favor more?" Komer suddenly asked, as if something had occurred to him.

Rebry fell into deep thought for a long while before saying, "I cannot predict because the two are not easily comparable, and what’s most important is His Holiness the Pope’s attitude."

"That wise old man who is old but not perishable?" Komer asked with a mix of jest and respect.

"Never underestimate him, even if his soul has returned to God’s kingdom, I believe his name can still have an unexpected impact." Rebry could talk and laugh with ease in front of anyone from the Church of Light, but he had nothing but respect for that elderly man. If it hadn’t been for his excessive indulgence of Frenster, Vazinsky, Noyola, and their ilk, perhaps the doctrines of the Church of Light wouldn’t have been altered by this bunch to such an extent, and he himself wouldn’t have embarked on the path of rebirth.

Komer nodded thoughtfully. He never ignored Rebry’s words. The Church of Light, this gigantic behemoth, could still bring endless storms even in its extreme weakness. Having reached an irreversible opposition, they naturally had to be doubly careful.

"Let’s hope his fire of the soul has already burnt out. I certainly don’t want to reach the day where I truly have to confront him face to face," Komer shrugged.

"To have such a day would be an honor of a lifetime. What is there to regret in death?" Rebry looked outside the window, his eyes filled with wistfulness.
