Chapter 829: Volume 25, Rowing against the Current, Chapter 16, Rescue Challenge
Komer, clad in his voluminous black robe, sat in the room alone, the dim environment seeming to impart a sense of tranquility and peace. At least, that’s how Komer felt as he sat quietly, thinking of nothing yet encompassing everything in his mind, his thoughts wandering to the farthest reaches, his spirit journeying thousands of miles. At this moment, he could allow his mind’s musings the chance to stretch infinitely without any fetters to hinder their flight. With his eyes half-closed, his mind would sometimes become clear, at other times a chaotic maelstrom, and this illusion of a moment lasting a year brought Komer great comfort.
Meditating alone was evidently beneficial for enhancing his Spiritual Power, with elements from the surrounding air excluded from his thoughts. He needed only to explore quietly, and with each bit of insight, he gathered them into his heart, little by little, accumulating like fur from the arm becoming a coat, sand becoming a tower. Komer could even sense the rapid growth and movement of that power within his soul, the nourishment of Magic Power enriching his spirit. Only when his soul expanded infinitely to a certain height, could Komer begin to glimpse the profound mysteries of the Magic Heaven.
"Ding!" A crisp sound rang in Komer’s ears, pulling him back from his boundless spiritual journey. He slowly shifted his gaze forward, as the holographic image, once blurred like a light shadow in water, gradually became clear before Komer’s eyes.
The image of Maha Gummi with his mischievous appearance appeared at the entrance of the courtyard. Komer frowned slightly; although he knew Maha Gummi’s presence at this time must be for something important, the fact that it wasn’t the person he was waiting for made Komer somewhat disappointed. However, he quickly adjusted his mood, as those in high positions have no personal time to themselves.
With a light tap of his finger, the holographic image faded away slowly, disappearing into the air like a wisp of smoke, silent and traceless. Standing up, he stretched his body casually and pulled back the heavy curtain, Komer standing with his hands behind his back.
The sound of firm, steady footsteps approached, and Maha Gummi, viewing not the broadest of backs, still felt an immense reverence for Lord Komer. Each encounter with the Lord always imparted in him some new sensation, and even Maha Gummi couldn’t explain why his usually calm mind would experience such subtle enlightenment in the presence of the Lord.
"What’s the matter?"
"Lord, the matter you instructed me to investigate now has some leads," Maha Gummi stated, not daring to enter without permission, standing at the door. The gloomy atmosphere of the indoors hit him, making it slightly uncomfortable for him, not knowing why the Lord preferred such an environment for solitude—perhaps it was a necessity unique to Mages. Maha Gummi dared not speculate recklessly.
"The matter I asked you to investigate? Which one?" It must be no small matter for Maha Gummi to come looking for him at this time.
Looking up in slight surprise, Maha Gummi then said, "The matter concerning Mr. Rebry."
"Oh?" Komer’s spirit lifted; this matter had been ongoing for some time, yet Maha Gummi’s men had always been unable to grasp more detailed and accurate intelligence. Komer had been too preoccupied with other matters to attend to it recently, and now that he had delegated the affairs of Homer to Neptune, he could be somewhat at leisure. With this new development, it was just the right time. "Go on."
"Mr. Rebry is still imprisoned in the dungeon tower of the Marco Religious Tribunal. Our people have been watching that place for a long time. However, we dare not infiltrate, nor can we understand the situation inside; we only know that there are at least fifteen people around the dungeon tower, among them five who are said to be senior members of the Court, and three who are reputed to be Saints of the Church of Light, along with three Semi Holy Knights. The status of the other four is unclear. It seems their surveillance is not very strict; usually, there are only two to three people present at a time. On every Saturday, their guard is likely the weakest, typically with only one Light Saint, a senior member of the Court, and two Semi Holy Knights on duty, but at other times there could be five to six people."
Maha Gummi felt somewhat ashamed; in fact, these details were still quite vague, but it was exceedingly difficult to infiltrate the Church of Light, especially the Religious Court. After surveilling the surroundings for a considerable length of time and even with the help of insiders from the Salvation Society, he had managed to gather this information. Knowing that Mr. Rebry was very important to the master, Maha Gummi did not dare delay further and reported as soon as he had a fairly comprehensive and systematic understanding.
"Hmm, are there any other dangers around the prison tower?" Komer had already turned his head, his starry eyes electric, the jet-black depths of his pupils as unfathomable as the vast starry sky.
"There is Saulsbury Church, three kilometers from the prison tower, which is a rather important place for the Church of Light, but there are usually no special figures there," Maha Gummi obviously organized this information very meticulously, as his master was not one to overlook details.
"Leave what you have in your hands and go down," Komer thought for a moment and did not ask any further questions.
Watching Maha Gummi’s retreating figure, Komer was deep in thought.
Perhaps it was indeed time to resolve the matter with Rebry, but was he truly prepared for it? Marco was not Jazair, much less Cyprus; it wasn’t a place where one could come and go as they pleased. He had made quite the stir in Homer, and the members of the Religious Court were not unaware of it, but their lack of any response so far caused some uneasiness in Komer’s heart. He didn’t like this feeling of being on guard every day, but under the current circumstances, it seemed unwise to provoke a fight with the Church of Light. However, if the target was only the Religious Court, or more precisely, a rescue mission for Rebry, it might be feasible.
Rebry was very important to him, increasingly so, Komer realized. This man, who had emerged from the Church of Light and was even a figure of saintly stature, had profound knowledge of the Church, yet he defected completely—not the kind of departure due to doctrinal disagreements as with the Salvation Society, but outright betrayal. His courage and daring truly set him apart. Rebry was not only highly accomplished in magic, his political savvy seemed far superior to that of those around Komer. For him, Rebry was more a mentor and friend in one, a source of shared intellect. Mihailovich, although his magical accomplishments were comparable to Rebry’s, lacked the ability to discuss a wide range of topics with Komer; his expertise was limited to magic.
There was no question of Rebry’s importance, but was his own power enough to rescue Rebry from Marco? Komer gently tapped on the wooden case in his meditation room. Although Maha Gummi’s intelligence indicated that the prison’s defenses were not particularly strict, and the guards themselves were not very impressive, Komer believed that the situation was not as simple as it seemed. With the resources available to Maha Gummi and the others, this was probably the extent of the information they could gather.
One must always prepare for the worst case scenario before taking action. The forces at his disposal were limited; Solonberg and Vladimir Koff could hold their own against the Semi Holy Knights, and with Mihailovich, Clarence, and Uma—though Komer wondered how the latter was doing since he acquired the body of the Light Saintess and then seemed to vanish—he rather believed that dominating the body and soul of the Light Saintess wasn’t as easy as imagined.
Interesting, thought Komer, who had deliberately chosen not to deal with that fellow. He was curious to see whether Uma, without his assistance and stripped of his original self, could conquer the body and soul of the Church’s Saintess. If that fellow made good progress, then perhaps Komer himself could undertake a daring adventure to Marco, to challenge the world-renowned invincibility of the Marco Religious Tribunal.
The harm done to him by Noyola and Lorenzo was something Komer never forgot. Although he was not arrogant enough to directly challenge the entire Religious Court, the prospect of striking a blow against the Religious Court’s arrogance in another way was highly appealing. Komer could hardly suppress a smile at the thought of Noyola and Lorenzo’s expressions if he managed to release all the prisoners from the tower—what a satisfying act of retribution against the degenerates of the Church of Light. As a respite from the tediousness of military and political affairs, if there were an opportunity to vent his emotions, Komer certainly did not intend to miss it.
With a clear, ringing "ding!" the awaited person finally arrived. Komer smiled slightly, and with a gentle tap of his finger, the holographic illusion once again slowly rose into the air. In the lush, verdant path outside the door, a graceful figure appeared, walking elegantly towards him—who else could it be but Lome?
