Chapter 749: Volume 22: Revival and Rise Chapter 9: The Frenzied Surge Is About to Begin
The enlistment of Melkin and Badi finally eased Muktse’s concerns. Under Muktse’s clandestine activities, traders finally began to take action. The first step was to raise a considerable sum of funds for Katya’s side to actively lobby in the near term, considerably boosting the morale on Katya’s side.
Hidden behind her window screen with a complex expression, Katya watched the young man stepping steadily into the inner courtyard of her residence. The calm and gentle look on his face made it hard to guess what was truly on his mind. This enigmatic man always brought her something new and stirring, forcing her to carefully ponder the hidden meanings.
In fact, Katya had known about Komer’s arrival in Jazair for some time but had no immediate plans to meet him. As far as she knew, this fellow hadn’t fully committed to her even at the last moment, still maintaining a tenuous connection with Hoffman. He thought he had covered his tracks, but in Jazair, nothing could be hidden from her. For the sake of money and profit, those nobles would sell out even their own wives and mistresses.
Yet, this man’s actions were indeed incredible. Under Muktse’s influence, the traders had already begun to pledge their loyalty to her, albeit still in a covert and unclear manner, which was a far cry from their previous coldness and distance when she had tried to contact them.
Most importantly, some nobles were showing new trends. Katya had long desired to open a breach in Hoffman’s noble faction, but the contempt and disdain from the Great Aristocracy to their very core made it impossible for her to garner any support from the noble faction, even something purely symbolic. However, it seemed that the icy situation was showing signs of thawing, at least the ambiguous goodwill displayed by renowned representatives like Melkin and Badi brought immense joy to Katya, who had struggled to gain the support of the Great Aristocracy.
Katya was certain all this had something to do with the young man now slowly making his way towards her. His hidden influence within the kingdom was unfathomably deep, managing to pull old nobles like Melkin and Badi into relations, and even the observing traders seemed to have changed their stance under his influence. All his actions clearly showed his support for her, but then why did he still maintain ties with Hoffman?
This was an enigma of a person; if the man did not demand Quke Valley in exchange for his full support, Katya would really hesitate to accept his kindness. A person without desires was the most difficult to figure out. Although his appetite was not small, Katya preferred to deal with ambitious and desirous individuals rather than those whose intentions were inscrutable.
"Your Highness, Viscount Komer has arrived," her attendant said lightly as he twirled into the room.
"Mhm, I know. Ask him to wait in the reception room and say that I will be there after I change," Katya replied without moving, in a languid voice.
"Yes, Your Highness," the attendant bowed respectfully and left, leaving Katya to be by herself.
Katya felt she needed some time to sort out her somewhat chaotic thoughts. Recently facing Hoffman’s aggressive pressure, she had been preoccupied with coping, and both her body and mood were somewhat tired. But it was often on the eve of decisive battles that one must not dare to slack off. With Hoffman having the upper hand, she could not afford to lose her grip.
If both traders and financiers could shift their ambiguous attitudes and support her, her situation would be much improved. Although she was still at a disadvantage against Hoffman, she would at least have the possibility of turning the tables. Right now, the crux lay in the attitudes of Tez and Mathew. The three major legions were under Mathew’s control, while Tez’s stance influenced the attitudes of a large number of Jazair government officials. Although the Great Aristocracy supporting Hoffman had plainly laid out their demands to both Mathew and Tez, neither of them paid heed to the aristocrats’ threats. The two men, well-weathered by political storms, were accustomed to the bluster of the Great Aristocracy. It was the concerns of the Four Great Lords of the Kingdom that truly mattered to Tez and Mathew, and the Great Aristocracy of Jazair had intricate connections with those Four Great Lords, to the point of collusion.
When the charming Katya finally appeared in front of Komer, he was almost certain that she was deliberately suppressing her own aura. Komer didn’t care; the more she did so, the more it revealed her insecurity. Subconsciously, he wanted to scoff, yet he still satisfied her vanity with respectful demeanor on the surface.
Dashler Schnecke, with steady steps, entered the tent festooned with black and gold patterns, leaving the burly man that had been pacing nervously inside to abruptly turn around. The bearded lips seemed poised to inquire something but then he seemed to realize his impatience, lightly coughing before striding forward a few steps to ask, "Dashler, how’s the situation?"
"Hmm, the situation hasn’t changed much, the Iron Cross Corps is still stationed in the west, the Blue Dove Corps has now been pushed to the front line, and the Golden Oak Legion is holding near Jazair,..."
Before the thin, cold-looking man could finish, the burly man had already impatiently cut him off, "What about their Mage Corps? How is the Court Mage Corps doing?"
"There hasn’t been much activity yet, but signs are suggesting that their Court Mage Corps might soon be leaving Jazair to head southeast to Homer. It seems they’re planning to help Homer subdue a wayward minor lord in the south." Dashler Schnecke certainly knew what news the leader wanted to hear.
With furry palms rubbing together excitedly and the deep lines on his forehead smoothing out a bit with emotion, Shami Taegor’s thick lips seemed to chew on something, his amber eyes flashing fiercely, "Hmph, it seems that these mortals can’t be trusted. They’re keeping such a great opportunity from us in secret, so it seems they’re reluctant to see us completely destroy the Kingdom of Nicosia."
Dashler did not join in the conversation, his job was to provide the necessary intelligence. He did not want to voice any opinions or advice without being directly asked for them.
Pacing swiftly around the tent twice, Shami Taegor was clearly at a crossroads. Without any notable message being conveyed and with an intentional concealment, it was evident that they did not want the Beamon Kingdom to know these details. Their intention was clear—they still hoped that the Kingdom of Nicosia, once the most powerful nation in the Northern Alliance, would continue to maintain its weakened, semi-divided state. In their eyes, the Beamon Kingdom was probably just a tool for use. Without their help, it seemed that the Beamon Kingdom could only stay put on the Mogan Wilderness. With this thought, Shami Taegor was filled with a burning rage. Damn these mortals, to think they could control everything in this world?!
With his eyelids drooping, Dashler seemed to pay no mind to the Tiger Clan Leader before him, who appeared somewhat agitated. It was rare for him to see the usually composed and steady Tiger Clan Leader in such a state. In his memory, the Tiger Clan King had always been calm and collected, a demeanor all Beamons considered kingly, so much so that even Carter Wolfe had to admit he fell slightly short in this aspect. But today, the Tiger Clan King seemed rather impatient, and Dashler knew his news played a part in this. Now it remained to be seen how the Beamon ruler would deal with the current situation.
"Dashler, in your judgment, which is more vulnerable, the Blue Dove Legion in the north or the Iron Cross Corps in the west?" The heavy breathing made Dashler aware that the Beamon ruler had perhaps made a final decision and was now considering which route would be more convenient.
"The Nicosian’s northern defense line is definitely weaker; their fortress castles have been thoroughly destroyed by us, so they have to retreat further south to establish an effective defense line. The western line, having been fortified for a longer time, might have better defense installations. However, looking at their defensive forces, the Nicosian’s Blue Dove Corps is currently stronger than the newly reformed Iron Cross Corps, so the situation on both fronts are quite similar," said Dashler matter-of-factly.
Seemingly not fully satisfied with the careful words of the Snake Tribe’s leader, Shami Taegor bluntly steered the conversation, "Then what do you think are our chances of success if we mount a surprise attack this time around?"
After a brief silence, the Snake Tribe leader spoke in a muffled voice, "Shami, have you already decided to take action? Where does your confidence come from? Without the support from within the mortals, do we have absolute certainty?"
"Pff, nothing is ever absolutely certain. To go to war is to accept risk! Dashler, we can’t count on those mortals; they just want to use the martial power of us Beamons for the personal desires of a few. We both understand this. Why wouldn’t they let us know of such significant information? Why have they deliberately exaggerated the preparedness of the Nicosians lately? It’s clear they don’t want us to take advantage of this opportunity. But they’re overlooking one thing—we have never relied entirely on them. We have our own brains, our own judgment!" declared the Tiger Clan King, pointing to his head forcefully.
