Chapter 623: Volume 16: Mists and Illusions, Chapter 16: The Demon’s Smile
Clarence simply couldn’t hold out any longer, the Blue Flood Dragons were too crazed, and the Gravity Spell seemed to have lost its effect on these creatures. Thunder Magic, too, was greatly restricted by the adult Blue Flood Dragons’ protective maneuvers, and with their guard, the juvenile Blue Flood Dragons were exceptionally active. It was in this way that Dreyba was torn to pieces alive. Gilbano was hit in the chest by these damned magical beasts and lay motionless in the lake water; his chances of survival seemed slim.
Under such circumstances, it was truly too difficult to keep oneself going; now, the only option was to go their separate ways in search of survival. It wasn’t that one didn’t want to take responsibility, but at this rate, when the magic power was exhausted, it was feared that none would be able to escape the Demonic claws of the Blue Flood Dragons, set on tearing them to pieces.
In the final moments, Clarence decided to make one last effort for his comrades to create an opportunity for escape; success or failure would be a matter of luck. Muttering spells and coordinating with the Yellow Stone Wand in hand, he whirled around, dodging a ferocious strike from a Blue Flood Dragon. Suddenly, three enormous Mud Giant Demons emerged from the muddy ground, interposing themselves between the Blue Flood Dragons and the magicians.
"Get out of here!" Clarence’s massive body suddenly sank downward, and the already soft, damp ground opened up abruptly like a gaping hole. As Clarence’s body quickly disappeared below, the mud closed back up over him. This Earth Escape Technique was the most fundamental survival method for an Earth-based magician, especially on wet ground, which made for the best way to escape. This was the main reason Clarence had dared to hold out for so long without fear.
Dumbfounded by the Mud Giant Demons conjured by Clarence’s magic, the Blue Flood Dragons, clearly less intelligent than humans, faced the sudden appearance of these bizarre creatures. As the Mud Giant Demons lunged at them with bared fangs and claws, the dragons instinctively knew that these new arrivals were not here to help. Their tails abruptly erect, the dragons lashed out fiercely, toppling one Mud Giant Demon, which exploded into dirt and debris. Some parts, where the magic had not yet dissipated, still writhed on the ground, drawing the curiosity of the juvenile Blue Flood Dragons.
When Clarence created his Mud Giant Demons, all magicians knew it was time to seize the chance to escape. If they didn’t leave now, they might never have another chance. Sheferley slightly contracted his body, and the staff in his hand transformed into a huge magic power wood column. With a shake of the column, numerous dark green tendrils sprang forth from tiny holes, covering the entire column in an instant. The tendrils stretched into the surrounding space like living creatures, quickly forming a barrier of vines. At that moment, Sheferley cast a modest Wind Travel Technique. Staffs could be remade or bought, but one had only a single life to live. If not now, when would be the right time?
The Blue Flood Dragons immediately noticed Sheferley’s attempt to escape and roared, soaring into the air. However, the vines on the wooden column spread out rapidly, ensnaring the dragons within a tight net. The enraged Blue Flood Dragons struggled with all their might, but the vines, thick as fingers, refused to yield, binding ever tighter around the dragons. If Solonberg hadn’t seen Sheferley escaping without a backward glance, he might have doubted whether the Blue Flood Dragons could ever break free.
However, the Blue Flood Dragons quickly proved their strength. When the dragons curled their bodies to the smallest size and then explosively stretched out, the strained vines snapped. Now free, the dragons shot into the air, but by then, Sheferley had gained enough time to vanish along the shores of Ice Lake, infuriating the dragons even more.
Compared to Clarence’s and Sheferley’s successful escapes, Burqin and Deravade might not have been so lucky. Light attack magic wasn’t very effective against Blue Flood Dragons. Aside from one or two types of High-level Light Magic which could inflict damage on adult Blue Flood Dragons, common spells like Holy Light Bath were almost ineffective.
When Clarence raised his Mud Giant Demons, Burqin also released a succession of high-level Heavenly Light Exorcism Magic without respite. This type of magic, originated from Light Magic, had considerable killing power against Magical Beasts and Dark Class creatures, but it was extremely magic power-consuming. Several Blue Flood Dragons were simultaneously struck by this all-encompassing spell, causing them to writhe and roll in agony on the surface of the water. Burqin, nearly faint from effort, knew this was his only hope. Disregarding the risk to his fundamental Saint Yuan Power, he quickly initiated the Land Soaring Technique, and in a flash, he flew thirty meters away with lightning speed.
But the Saint Light-struck Blue Flood Dragons had no intention of just watching their enemies escape. The most ferocious female, intertwined with her mate, lifted their conjoined heads, and with a roar that depleted their Magic Crystal Power, aimed precisely in the direction of Burqin’s escape.
The mammoth roar of the Flood Dragon enveloped a powerful sonic wave, sweeping through like a wild storm. Burqin, who thought he had escaped the clutches of the Female Blue Flood Dragon, was caught off guard by the spatial sonic attack. The thunder-like wave invaded his body, and the fierce impact robbed him of his ability to flee. He fell from the sky; although he had sprinted nearly a hundred meters, Burqin knew he was unlikely to escape his fate.
Deravade was even less fortunate. The rise of the Heavenly Light Exorcism Magic gave him a sliver of hope. After casting three strengthening magics in succession, Deravade knew it was time for him to escape. However, with no expertise in genuine offensive magic, his chances of escape were slim. The simple Wind Travel Technique was just the most basic movement spell within Wind System magic, not even considered an escape technique. He hadn’t made it thirty meters before he was locked onto by a young Female Blue Flood Dragon. The bone-chilling killing intent made Deravade inwardly lament his unlucky fate, that he would die in such a place.
As the claw of the young Flood Dragon loomed over the crown of Deravade’s head, he could only bow his head in dim resignation, waiting for death to arrive. However, a piercing roar of the Flood Dragon snapped him out of his despair. A Puppet, shining with metallic luster and aura, wielding a scythe like the Scythe of Death, swept past the claws of the young Flood Dragon with a sharp, whistling sound. The sharp scythe instantly severed three claws of the young dragon. Intense pain caused the Flood Dragon to dive and thrash about in the lake, but the Puppet seemed unwilling to leave matters at that. Its feet suddenly burst with countless swelling bubbles, allowing the Metal Magic Doll to continue the unfinished battle with ease upon the lake’s surface.
Clarence had burrowed underground and tunneled more than three hundred meters away in a single breath. Racing through the mud, apart from the slight bulging that rapidly extended outwards from the ground’s surface, nothing else was amiss. Only when he believed he was free from the threat of the Blue Flood Dragon did Clarence quietly emerge from the ground, wanting to breathe in some fresh air. Yet the moment he peeked out, he realized his luck was extremely poor. The tip of a gigantic Dragon Spear was pointed right at his head, and as the mud kept tightening, hardening like stone and almost suffocating him. Clarence knew he had encountered a true earth-based magician.
"Mr. Clarence, please stand up. We’ve been waiting for you for quite a while. Perhaps we can have a proper talk."
Cheferley’s escape came to an abrupt end at the same time Clarence encountered trouble. The cold Fighting Qi locked Cheferley in place in an instant. Suspended in the air, Cheferley had no choice but to follow the ominous Qi down obediently. He didn’t know who was lying in wait for him, but as long as it wasn’t the Blue Flood Dragon, it was negotiable. Since the other party had not killed him right away, it meant there was room for negotiation and likely his life wasn’t in great danger.
Rebry’s mission was easily accomplished; the fall of Burqin allowed him to complete his task effortlessly. The pursuing Flood Dragons were immediately confronted by silent individuals who were eager for battle. He knew it was a fight without suspense. The Flood Dragons, having expended much of their strength, stood no chance against these prepared Dark Magicians. He was confident that soon, several sets of armor made from Flood Dragon hide, naturally resistant to magic and particularly effective against water and earth-based magics, would appear on the important members of Komer’s ranks.
Rebry’s guess was correct; the ensuing battle was utterly one-sided. When Solonberg couldn’t hold back anymore and nailed the young Flood Dragon to a large tree on the lake shore with a leap and a thrust of his spear, the two adult Blue Flood Dragons lost all resistance under the combined onslaught of several magicians. With the help of two high-level Skeletons summoned by Mihailovich, the mechanical Metal Magic Doll successfully completed its mission, cleaving the young Blue Flood Dragon in two.
Under Komer’s suggestion, the knights who had not perished disappeared after an inspection by Vladimir Koff and Solonberg. Knights were of no use to Caucasus. The upbringing and family values ingrained in them from birth meant they would not serve him, and thus they had no reason to exist. On the other hand, the magicians needed to be treated differently, with a devilishly charming smile appearing on Komer’s face.
