Chapter 622: Volume 16: Mists and Illusions, Chapter 15: The Snipe and the Clam
The Magicians, fully prepared, finally launched their attack. A succession of Light Bindings and even Gravity Spells immediately caused the agile Blue Jiao to struggle desperately, while offensive magic also appeared in the air. The best magic to use against such Magical Beasts is Thunder Magic, for every beast instinctively fears it. Bursts of Yin Thunder Sound floated in the air, and the wind and clouds, along with the thunder, emitted dazzling arcs of electricity that struck from every direction. The desperate Blue Jiao twisted its body frantically, trying to avoid the assault it couldn’t understand why it provoked by simply frolicking by the lake.
Countless Knight Spears drew up waves of gold and silver, creating a thousand layers of Sword Qi and spear shadows. The Blue Jiao was immediately in a situation akin to facing slaughter. The Knights moved with elegance as if strolling by the lakeside, their casual and confident demeanor making Komer somewhat envious. Did these guys really think they had everything under control? No, the game had just begun, and it was far from over. The marvelous outcome was not something anyone could predict.
"It’s time, Shatima. You can notify the Blue Jiao’s partners now." Somewhat jealous of those true Knights’ carefree grace, only strength could make these guys realize that the world isn’t as simple as they imagine. Everything must be explained by strength, and mere arrogance will only lead to disgrace.
Komer watched the scene unfold with satisfaction, finding it truly wonderful. The Blue Jiao was indeed not weak, but the Magicians and Knights before him were also remarkably formidable. Within just two rounds, they had driven the Blue Jiao into a hopeless situation. If his own group had to confront the other side head-on, they would certainly win but at a considerable cost. Now, someone else—no, the Blue Jiao, this free labor—was taking care of it all, while he could simply sit back and watch the battle unfold.
"Heehee, there’s no need to notify them. The Blue Jiao’s hearing is extremely sensitive; they’ve already detected their partner’s distress. But I can guide them a bit to help them find the battlefield sooner," Shatima also seemed particularly interested in the Great War unfolding before them. Although she couldn’t participate, being able to watch so closely was almost like being in the thick of it.
Gently pressing her mouth to the ground, Shatima let out a deep howl towards the northeast. The ground and leaves trembled slightly, and a sound wave, like a call for help to a partner, instantly reached the searching group of Blue Jiaos.
"What’s that sound?" Komer asked curiously after watching Shatima make this gesture.
"Imitating the distress calls of those little crawlers. This kind of sound wave travels faster and more clearly through the ground. The little crawlers will be here soon. Heehee, what a breathtaking show this is," Shatima’s smile curled up in a devilish grin, looking particularly sinister.
When the Knight Spears of two Knights penetrated without hindrance into the gaps of the scales on the chest and abdomen of the Blue Jiao—which was struggling in the water—it let out a shrill scream that nearly tore through the sky. The Magicians, full of confidence, began to gather their Magic Wands, while the satisfied Knights started to wipe their blades clean. This victory had come too easily; they hadn’t expected the Blue Jiao to be as weak as it was, contrary to their expectations. It seemed that books and rumors could be wrong: there’s no substitute for seeing with one’s eyes. The famous Blue Jiao was just so after all.
But for them, the celebration was too premature. Just as they were proudly watching the Mountain-swallowing Blue Jiao twist and then lay still, a Knight eased his Spear from the fatal wound of the Blue Jiao, and a white silk scarf stylishly wiped the green blood off. Meanwhile, the Magicians were happily discussing how to divide the spoils before them. At this moment, a violent screech from midair signaled that a sudden change was about to unfold.
Four Blue Jiaos, swooping in from the lake’s surface, picked up the scent of their kin’s blood almost instantly. The huge stimuli sent them into a Berserk State at once. When they saw the limp body of the Blue Jiao abandoned by the lakeshore, the grey eyes of the Blue Jiaos turned blood red.
With almost no warning, the four Blue Jiaos opened their dragon-like maws, and intense sound waves, like a gale, whipped up a massive whirlpool on the lake’s surface, spreading outwards in waves. The first to bear the brunt were two unprepared Knights. As they turned their heads to see the horrified expressions of their peers and the Magicians, they only had time to glimpse the four green figures reigning in the sky before a thunderous roar pierced their ears. The overpowering sound wave instantly ruptured the unguarded eardrums of the Knights, and from their dim gazes and the blood trailing from their eyes and nostrils, it was clear there was no hope left for them.
The four knights, engulfed in a mix of grief and rage, positioned their severely injured companion aside and suddenly leaped into the air. Three knight spears and one knight’s sword soared up like three morning stars and a dazzling firefly, striking fiercely at the leading Azure Serpent clawing wildly in the sky.
The Azure Serpent also realized in time that its opponent was not as fragile as imagined. Flashes of cold lightning, carrying endless Sword Qi, swept over, enveloping the entire space. By this time, the magicians had also come to their senses. Four Azure Serpents! My God! Had it not been for the four knights at the forefront who took the brunt of the Azure Serpents’ fierce pounce, it’s feared that it would have been the turn of the four magicians to fall prey to the claws of the serpents.
Heavy Earth Shields and Light Shields slowly rose above the flurry of the magicians, who could only at this point take care of themselves. The sharp claws and teeth of the Azure Serpent could easily turn the fragile magicians into shreds, and with no idea how long these knights could withstand, selfishness prevailed as they ensured their own safety before considering others.
The foremost Azure Serpent let out a ferocious roar, boldly facing the oncoming Sword Qi. The mature serpent’s claw, covered with scales, was not like the young serpent from before — just one strike dispersed the light emitted from the knight’s sword like falling lanterns. Blood spurted from the sword-wielding knight’s mouth as the enormous impact forced him into the lake. Without the aid of the magicians’ defensive magic, directly facing the mature Azure Serpent’s furious strike was more than he could handle. The mature Azure Serpent wasn’t having an easy time either. Indestructible Fighting Qi infused into the blade created a spray of blue blood, causing the serpent uncontrollable pain, eliciting a plaintive howl to the sky.
Seeing the sword-wielding knight plummet like a meteorite, a young Azure Serpent followed in an instant. The hefty serpent’s tail smashed down fiercely, crushing the lowered head of the knight, turning half the lake surface crimson with splattered blood.
The magicians now suddenly snapped out of their trance, with the knights’ frontline defense gone, and no cover provided, the Azure Serpents’ lightning-fast attacks could easily shred them to pieces. A slew of defensive magic was raised, providing cover over the knights, but alas, such protection had come a little too late. The aggrieved mother Azure Serpent, whose massive body coiled up, thrust its horn tip fiercely against the incoming knight spear, embedding the flashing spear deep into the base of its horn — its strongest part. Although the pain caused the serpent to roll in the sky, the mighty tail swept through in the last moment, delivering a devastating blow. Despite the Fighting Qi protection, the knight could not resist this strike, filled with power accumulated over hundreds of years. Blood splattered like scarlet streaks, and the twisted, pale visage confirmed that the lead knight, too, was now on the brink of death.
As the knights’ resistance came to a dismal end, it was time for the magicians to face their doom. The sky was full of rolling clouds; the magicians had given their all to invoke the Thunder Magic Array. However, it was regrettable that such an array came too late. To the mature Azure Serpents, this mid-level thunder-based array could not put them to death, and the rage of having their offspring killed had made them forget their fear. The four serpents soared upwards, two above and two flanking from the sides. With scarcely a moment’s attention, a young Azure Serpent had cleverly torn through the gap in the Magic Shield to rip open the sternum of a magician—his gory wound went straight through his chest, clearly no chance to survive. The overwhelming thunder strikes also disoriented the young Azure Serpent. Had it not been for the mature Azure Serpent recklessly shielding it with its body, it likely would have been reduced to charred remains from the concentrated thunder strikes.
Clearly, the mature Azure Serpent’s experience with thunder strikes was much richer. Its skillfully erected scales cleverly deflected the arcs of electricity across its body. Though equally uncomfortable, it could keep its body intact to the greatest extent. Occasionally, dipping its tail into the water transferred the thunder strikes through the lake, avoiding fatal damage to its vitals.
Seeing each magician cleverly dragged out of their defensive circle and killed in the Azure Serpents’ coordinated attacks filled Komer with inward alarm. These serpents were indeed formidable; their innate blood ties allowed them to communicate telepathically. Every move by a member was echoed by the others. Though the magicians continually used their magic power to activate Magic Shields to block the Azure Serpents’ offensive, it was evident that their collaborative strategy was not very effective.
When Komer noticed the earth-based magician signaling the other associates with a gesture, he knew that these feeble souls were preparing to flee for their lives. Continuing like this only meant they’d all end up dead here. Now the only option was to run separately and hope for the best luck, while those who were weaker would inevitably become the sacrificial victims.
"Hehe, gentlemen, it’s our turn to take the stage. I’ll deal with that earth-based magician, Rebry, keep your eyes on that guy named Burqin, Mihailovich, watch that Deravak, and Vladimir Koff, make sure to keep an eye on that Sheferley fellow. Solonberg, the rest is up to you," Komer said with a crazed laugh. "A fight between two equals benefits the bystander—isn’t that what they say, Mr. Xerob? We’ll leave the four Azure Serpents to you. Uma, assist them—I hope you don’t disappoint me."
