Chapter 598: Volume 15: Thunder Shakes the Ground Chapter 16: Abnormal Resentful Spirit
Wave after wave of chilly coldness swept over the group, and nearly everyone felt the oppressive cold pressure almost instantly, creating a suffocating sensation. What was going on? The Black Warriors and Skeleton Warriors opposite them seemed to be suddenly infused with souls and vitality. They exuded a fierce aura, and even the faint dark mist on the Black Warriors’ long swords suddenly erupted, the dim dark light flowing over the blades like water, indicating the Black Warriors were now enhancing their Mana in preparation for battle.
"Hee hee, there are also two little girls, hmm, one seems to be a half-blood, with a not bad figure, rivaling my body from those days." Seemingly stirred by memories, another wave of murderous intent transmitted through Komer’s mind-reading, "Hmph, and this Elf Woman, I will make her into the true Dark Elf King of this world!"
Upon sensing the murderous intent, Rebry, Mihailovich, and the others immediately became alert. Even though they could not trace the shadowless presence that surged like waves, in the Underground Ancient Castle, anything could happen. Whatever the source, it was certainly not friendly. Rebry and Mihailovich realized that only now were they truly facing a crisis—an earlier skirmish was merely an appetizer compared to the main course.
"Heh heh, Kid, it seems your companions are preparing for a Great War. Unfortunately, your strength is too fragile, and you and your friends will hardly have the chance for a grand performance. Have you ever heard the phrase ’overwhelmingly powerful’? You are the weak, the decayed! Hahahaha, let my children come out to give you a performance, my children, it’s your turn to take the stage!"
Waves of shrill laughter reverberated through the mind-reading spell. While it caused no physical harm to Komer, the arrogance and boastful nature of the adversary still riled him up. She was a highly twisted woman, perhaps having stayed in this sunless environment for too long, which had completely warped her mentality. Coupled with powerful transformative abilities, Komer was still unsure whether she had a physical body—was she an energy body, or had she possessed her original body, or possibly usurped someone else’s?
When heavy footsteps started coming from behind the eager Skeleton Warriors and the indifferent Black Warriors, all eyes from Komer’s party turned towards the Dark Depths. The wheezing breaths, like those from an old bellows working furiously, prompted a question: was it a beast or a Demon? The hearts of Komer’s group were now suspended in mid-air, it was clear they had fallen into a deadlock with no easy escape. Although the Black Warriors and Skeleton Warriors had yet to exhibit overly aggressive behavior, the released aura clearly marked the group as prey.
Two massive forms finally emerged from behind the restless Skeleton Warriors. The others were just surprised, but fear had contorted the faces of Rebry, Mihailovich, and Newman, with Newman’s complexion turning to an ashen grey. Komer had his suspicions, but upon seeing the expressions of the three, his suspicions were confirmed—this was a stroke of misfortune!
"Thud, thud, thud..." Newman, his face ashen, almost shrank behind the others, "That, that’s a Giant Spirit Warrior, my God, beings of legend from the same era as the Dragon Clan, what are they doing here? Oh, my eyes must be deceiving me, I don’t believe it!"
Hearing Newman speak like that, the already convinced Rebry and Mihailovich felt their hearts sink even further. The Giant Clan was not the same as the Giant Spirit Clan. The Giant Clan was merely a branch of the Human Clan, whereas the Giant Spirit Clan was said to be descendants of the Earth Goddess Gaia—though such tales might be embellished, they were enough to underscore their unique heritage. The Giant Spirit Clan was rumored to possess boundless Power, drawing inexhaustibly from the land as long as their bodies stayed connected to it, and the Earth Goddess had also bestowed them with inherent healing abilities. Even if they suffered severe injuries, as long as they were not killed on the spot, they could rapidly recover, making them the bravest warriors at the forefront during the mythic battles between light and darkness.
"It’s not just Giant Spirit Warriors, but Giant Zombies. I can hardly imagine who would have the power to kill a Giant Spirit Warrior and moreover refine them into Zombies, Sir. I fear we won’t be able to escape this time. I can’t imagine how we could deal with these two. I might manage to cope with the Black Warrior, but against Giant Zombies, I’m afraid we are powerless." At this point, Rebry’s mood actually settled down; since they couldn’t escape the situation, panicking was pointless and would only add to their troubles.
The lifeless eyes of the Giant Spirit Warriors glanced over Komer’s group, then halted, seemingly waiting for the next command. The dark palms held Double-edged Giant Axes, somewhat similar to the weapons favored by Barbarian Soldiers, though their somber color and black gleam showed that these axes were far from ordinary.
"Kid, how do you find my two Giant Spirit Warriors? Would you like to have your knight companions test their mettle? No, no, not enough—I have even finer goods to showcase to you," transmitted the voice through mind-reading. Komer felt that the twisted spirit lurking in the shadows seemed more like a chattering woman boasting to strangers, apparently eager to flaunt her considerable power. Perhaps she was truly lonely, and with such a chance, how could she let it go to waste?
Then came a dense, minutely scattered sound of footsteps, like deer grazing the ground or foxes sweeping the sky. A swift flash of dark purple and silver light streaked across the Square, so fast that even Komer did not have time to see what it was. The oncoming chill carried a turbulent fierceness within it.

"What is this thing?" That question was probably what everyone present wanted to ask. The creature was only about half as tall as a regular person, its tiny limbs strikingly conspicuous. On its delicate face, there were no superfluous expressions to be seen, its gaze seeming to contain only a wild and fierce flavor. It draped in a leather cloak that looked somewhat comical, giving one the feeling as if a centipede or scorpion had suddenly crawled onto their back, creating an uncomfortable and heart-pounding sensation.
"It seems to be a dwarf, but at a time like this, could a dwarf that suddenly appears be ordinary?" Mihailovich said with a bitter smile, glancing at Rebry who was also sucking in the cool air through clenched teeth.
"Uh, do you seem to know what this thing is?" Rebry asked in return.
"Soul Eating Gnome. If I’m not mistaken, we’ve encountered one of the top assassins among the undead creatures. Soul Eating Gnomes are stuff of legends; I’ve only heard of them. They are said to be created from transformation gnomes of the dwarf clan who, after death, absorb the resentment of multiple spirits to refine themselves. Look at its hands. They must have been cleansed with Resentful Soul Sand from the Dead Sea, invincible to all. The moment they touch human skin, they can suck out a person’s vital energy. Ordinary people would lose their vitality and turn into zombies with just one touch, and even the powerful experts of Martial Dao or Mages can only shatter it before it gets close; otherwise, once it touches them, they are beyond salvation," Mihailovich explained with a bitter expression. "To think such a creature would be found within Damarlinsk Castle—it’s no wonder this place is called The Land of Demon’s Curse. I think we might have underestimated this place."
Rebry and Mihailovich’s conversation was heard by Komer through the maintained mental link. He also knew that the guy hiding in the darkness was definitely not making empty threats. Even if he and his comrades could escape, it seemed impossible for Newman, Lome, Grace, and Finitz to get away. What could he do to break this deadlock?
"Kid, how about it? Your two companions have some discernment, not bad. This is a Soul Eating Gnome that I’ve refined, yet to be used. In this accursed place full of Magical Beasts and dead things, there’s been no use for it. But now you’re here, it can finally feast," a wave of mental fluctuation came—it was that damned being flaunting its creation. "Kid, I think I have a lot more to show you, but it seems you might not last long enough to see it. Try to deal with them first, hahaha!"
"Hold on, can’t we talk this out? Perhaps killing us isn’t the best solution. Don’t you find it maddening to be alone here?" Komer steadied his mind and sent his thoughts back. Provoking the opponent wasn’t wise if he could avoid a direct confrontation, and he surely didn’t want to engage in a pointless battle of wills with a deranged Charming Spirit.
"Talk? Talk about what? There’s nothing to talk about. You’ve trespassed into the land I’m guarding. The only way out is to become like my ’children.’ No one is the exception; there’s nothing to discuss!" came the Charming Spirit’s quick response, flitting about.
"What’s the purpose of your guarding? Don’t you have a clear goal? I don’t believe you’re here just because you like this lifestyle. Maybe we can help you unravel this mystery or help you find the person you’re waiting for," Komer tentatively conveyed his intentions.
"Hehe, young fellow, you’re truly amusing. Had you been born three hundred years earlier, perhaps I could have enlightened you, but now, heh, it’s out of my hands," the mental response suddenly became erratic, and the opponent facing the group started to stir.
