Chapter 590: Volume 15: Thunder Shocking the Ground, Chapter 8: Detecting the Puppet
Lome timely cast the Holy Light Dust Removal Technique, a type of Light Magic particularly effective against this brand of spell—a combination of Petrification Magic and Dark Magic. The silvery-white Holy Light formed a halo the size of a plate in Lome’s hands, slowly rising in front of everyone. The silver light pierced through the dark red mist, which gradually dissipated under its cleansing.
Those with Magic Shields, such as Rebry and Mihailovich, were naturally undaunted by what they considered child’s play. To the true Mages or knights, this magic was not much of a threat. Of course, if a commoner was hit by such spell, they would likely be petrified and turned into a statue in a very short time, without even a chance to cry for help.
"Let’s go, it’s open now." The sturdy greenstone Door opened slowly after a hit from the Shatima Dragon Spear. The Door opened at an even pace, as if operated by some mechanism. The pitch-black interior of the Door was like the entrance to an endless Abyss, seemingly ready to swallow everything, even the light itself.
Mihailovich’s miniature Magic Puppet looked somewhat comical, with disproportionately long, thin arms that were likely made of the legendary Phantasmal Black Gold—an extremely rare Magic Metal that could change shape at will, becoming longer or shorter, thicker or thinner. It was Komer’s first encounter with such a material, and to his surprise, it was featured in Mihailovich’s preferred Puppet. The Puppet’s legs, however, were made of several short segments of Magic Metal and special wooden materials, seemingly capable of bending at any angle. The Puppet’s head was exquisitely crafted, likely made of wood, but clearly had a metallic object, also likely Magic Metal, embedded on the top. A pair of eyes made of a non-metal called Mingyuan Stone, which is particularly sensitive to Magic power, were capable of changing colors in response to different types of Magic power. It was a high-grade material used for detection and scouting purposes.
The Puppet walked two meters ahead of Shatima, its rotating head and telescopic arms ready to alert the explorers to danger. Although Komer was skeptical about how much a few meters could help in giving a warning, it was certainly much safer psychologically than letting anyone walk in front.
This was Mihailovich’s first time bringing out such prized equipment. His old friend Rebry, along with everyone else, paid close attention to the little Puppet. Shatima, trailing behind, was so curious that she almost touched the Puppet’s head if Komer hadn’t timely stopped her, fearing that her unfamiliarity with it might cause the delicate head to shatter under her touch—a situation that would surely drive Mihailovich mad.
Grace and Finitz had never before encountered a detecter Magic Puppet of such master craftsmanship. They could hardly believe that such a contraption could walk around like an intelligent creature, providing its master with pre-warnings. To them, it transcended the concept of tools and mechanisms and was more akin to a pet, albeit clearly devoid of life.
After entering the Door, everyone felt an indescribable oppression. The air seemed to emit a subtle, inexplicable sense of heaviness, unlike the staleness associated with long-sealed spaces. The small Puppet also slowed down its pace. Several orbs of Holy Light Fire floated around, with Lome casting Light Magic and Komer providing supplementary Magic power to maintain the Holy Light for longer.
The environment on the Second Floor was evidently more eerie than that of the first level of the Bunker. The fact that the range of the Holy Light had been significantly reduced was proof that the ambiance here naturally repressed Light Magic to some extent. Komer had to cast multiple Fireball techniques to broaden the visible range, but he did not stop Lome from continuing to emanate Holy Light Balls. After all, Light Magic naturally counteracted dark creatures; whether it was undead creatures or Dark Magical Beasts, they would be stripped of at least one layer of defense under the bath of Holy Light.
Newman meticulously examined the walls of the Passage, but his search was fruitless this time. The walls were dry and smooth, devoid of any drawings, inscriptions, or texts. When he touched them, he discovered not even a speck of dust, which was strange. In a place devoid of life for a long time, the walls should at least show signs of weathering. Even if the stones were of a special composition, they would absorb some dust. However, the current state indicated that this place did not seem to have been sealed off for long. It appeared more likely that creatures frequented the area, an unsettling thought for Newman, who shivered at the idea that if not Dark Magical Beasts, the only creatures that could dwell here so long were the undead.
As Newman pondered, the detection Puppet seemed to sense something, hesitating in its steps. Komer quickly expanded the range of his Fireball technique, pushing the illuminated area out two to three times further. The scene that unfolded before everyone caused almost every person to gasp in shock.
The building in front looked like a circular Square, whose full extent was impossible to see at that moment, or perhaps it was a site used for sacrificial ceremonies. The entryway where they arrived appeared to be a passageway exit. The terrain at the spot where the group halted was slightly lower; the oval interface featured a subtle bluish Flame that occasionally flickered to mark its presence. Komer guessed it was the airflow stirred by their opening of the Passage Door that caused the ever-still flame to start drifting.
Through the somewhat eerie blue flame circle, everyone could clearly see all that was illuminated by the fireball and Holy Light Ball, although the edges of the surroundings remained out of sight. Yet, the objects within view already gave the group reason to reconsider continuing their exploration.
