Chapter 589: Volume 15: Thunder Shakes the Ground Chapter 7: The Gate of Magic
Komer’s patient and tactful persuasion failed to convince the stubborn Grace, and while her request was not particularly excessive, considering that Eve and the other companions of the Dark Night Angel Mercenary Group were all otherwise engaged, Grace alone seemed very isolated and lonely. Under Grace’s deliberate entreaty, Komer finally agreed to her request, with the sole condition that Grace must restore herself to her best condition in the shortest time possible, to prevent herself from becoming a burden to the exploration team.
Upon learning that Grace had been granted permission to join the expedition, Havier, Bayezid, and Burianos were all very envious, but they were aware that they were not skilled in fighting in the damp and dark environment beneath the Bunker, especially against opponents that could be Undead Creatures; the mere thought of it sent shivers down their spines. Thus, while they envied her, they did not pester Komer to participate and simply congratulated Grace instead.
It was only Finitz who stubbornly clung to Komer, demanding to join the expedition on the grounds of how Komer could be so preferential, and after being sternly rejected by Komer, the little girl of the Elf Clan threatened to expose Komer’s secret relations with Lome. This left Komer speechless. Initially, he had merely wanted to take advantage of his dalliances with Lome to entice the young girl, but now it had become a tool for her to blackmail him. In the end, Komer had to grudgingly agree, which greatly displeased Rebry and Mihailovich, who thought that the exploration team was quickly turning into a sightseeing group. These members who lacked the ability to defend themselves could likely become an unnecessary burden and add many risks to the expedition.
However, Komer was, after all, the mastermind behind this expedition, and with various assurances from Komer, Rebry and Mihailovich, seeing no possibility to alter the fact, had to silently acquiesce; they demanded, however, that Komer be responsible for the safety of the two women. This was quite a headache for Komer; the environment below the Bunker was unlike any other, and dangers there were almost certainly fatal. If not supported by companions, it would be very difficult for Grace and Finitz to escape danger. Although it was as yet unknown what might be encountered, it was imaginable that this exploration would be anything but easy. As such, Komer had to privately agree to allow Rebry and Mihailovich to have first pick on one extra treasure found during the exploration, in exchange for their promise to do their best to ensure the safety of the two women.
Shatima, brimming with excitement, hoisted the heavy Dragon Spear and stood behind Newman, studying the Door. The dark Door featured a circular six-pointed star that flickered in and out of sight under the urging of Newman’s Magic Power, as if to signify that boundless secrets lay behind this Door. Newman had already examined this Door’s composition on several occasions, accompanied by Shatima. The Six-pointed Star represented Magic Power; Newman had discerned through Magic tests that the star’s pattern was coated with a powder made from a special Magic substance by means never before seen, possessing a strong sealing Power.
Newman was not incapable of overcoming this seal; through several attempts, he had nearly grasped the principle of the seal. It was an ancient glyph-based Magic curse, the glyph, through a special substance as a medium, now fused the sturdy Door and the Magic curse into one entity. If one relied only on Magic, opening this Door would be difficult. Furthermore, the glyph seemed to have a connection to the Door’s mechanism; if one could not remove the Magic Power and merely broke the Magic, it was likely to trigger a permanent lock on the Door’s mechanism. Conversely, if one attempted to break the seal with brute physical force, it would surely invoke a magical attack.
"Newman, how is it going? Have you decided how to open the Door?" Rebry asked impatiently. A large group had been waiting in front of the Door for so long, and yet Newman kept saying that the Magic curse was somehow connected to the passage of time, asking everyone to wait patiently. However, after more than an hour, they hadn’t even entered through the Door, which was quite frustrating.
"Almost done, it’ll be ready soon," Newman replied, ignoring the other’s impatience. If he did not open the Door at the optimal time, he would have to risk damaging this mysteriously mechanized Door, and Newman had always hoped to study this magical Door thoroughly after the conclusion of the exploration.
The Six-pointed Star grew increasingly bright, especially the beautiful female visage at the center of the star that gradually appeared surrounded by a halo, instantly drawing everyone’s gaze to it. The hazy luster within the star’s area constantly shifted colors, from the initial pale yellow gradually changing to silver-white, and the visage became clearer, with eyes as lively as those of a real person; however, the red mole between the eyes flickered on and off.
"This is the head of the sea demon Patten. Legend has it that her mole has the power to devour the souls of Mortals. The deeper the color of the mole, the more souls of Mortals she has devoured, and the stronger her Spiritual Power. The mole should be the button for this Door. Miss Shatima, please use the Dragon Spear to press this button, but remember not to use too much force and shield yourself with a Magic Shield to avoid accidents," Newman instructed, wiping a bead of sweat from his forehead. Activating the magic Door was not difficult; the challenge was using an erosion spell to neutralize the Magic Power adhered to the mechanism, preventing the release of Magic Power when stimulated by external physical force. Fortunately, there were Sault and Vladimir Koff, strong enough but whose own Magic carried certain properties that could easily trigger a magical counterattack. Thankfully, Shatima possessed a rich and neutral Magic Power, and the Dragon Spear had become the key to unlocking the magic Door.
Unable to contain her excitement any longer, Shatima let out a cry, for the Dragon Clan’s natural bravery knew no fear. The Dragon Spear, thick as a child’s arm, was lifted by her as easily as a blade of grass, its tip emitting an intermittent faint light as she aimed it straight at Patten’s forehead, at the mole resembling a ruby. A gentle breeze suddenly rose within the chamber, bringing a cool breath that seemed to flow behind each person, causing an involuntary drop of a few degrees in body temperature.
