Chapter 563: Volume 14: Accumulate Thinly, Erupt Mightily, Chapter 7: Dragon Lady Shatima

"I don’t know what to do. You seem unwilling to take my advice. Does Caucasus still hold some attraction for you?" Komer shook his head and thought for a moment before adding, "It’s not impossible for you to stay in Caucasus. As the Lord of Caucasus, I can afford the expenses for one person, uh, one human-shaped dragon, but...••••••"

"But what? Don’t worry, I won’t cause you trouble. If you need my help, I will do my utmost." At this moment, the Dragon Lady had completely forgotten that she was once a lofty dragon and now seemed more like a lonely, vulnerable woman looking for support.

"Help? Hmm, I fear I don’t need your help for the time being. I’m thinking about how to explain your identity to outsiders; you seem completely unaware of our Human Clan customs. This can easily give us away, especially since several of my friends are Mages and Magic Knights, and they are very sensitive to the aura of the Dragon Clan," Komer frowned deliberately.

"I will be very careful to control my Dragon Magic Power. Or, I could just avoid your friends and stay by your side. I guess there won’t be any need to use Dragon Magic Power, right? Isn’t that okay?" The Dragon Lady was truly becoming irritated.

"Hm, I’ll have to think about it. Although my territory isn’t densely populated, Ugru is the capital of Caucasus with a considerable population density. If you are going to stay in Caucasus, then you’ll be surrounded by humans. Can you adapt? Moreover, you’ll have to learn our Human Clan’s daily etiquette and customs. A minor embarrassment is one thing, but if someone with ulterior motives discovers the truth, that would be troublesome," Komer feigned this concern to temper the creature’s nature, lest she really cause him trouble that would become his own making.

Upon hearing Komer say this, the Dragon Lady’s spirits lifted, "No problem, I will be careful. I am not a dragon that likes to cause trouble, uh, person. Can’t I just stay at home and sleep when there is nothing else to do?"

"Hmph, I’m afraid you can stir up trouble even in your sleep." Komer replied sourly, "I must also reiterate the principle of our Caucasus: we do not keep idle hands. Though you currently must stay in our Caucasus for various reasons, and I can provide for your basic needs temporarily, remember that it’s not for free. When I need your help, you must help me unreservedly."

"Your Excellency Baron, do you really think that we, the Dragon Clan, are like your Human Clan? Our word is our bond. Since I have agreed to your terms, I will certainly fulfill them. There is no need for you to keep reminding me. If there’s anything you need help with, just tell me. As long as it’s within my power, I’ll get it done without needing your prodding," the Dragon Lady retorted with displeasure, clearly unhappy with Komer’s incessant reminders.

When the Ice Dragon appeared before everyone in human form, Komer thought he could deceive all eyes. But he immediately realized his mistake when the sudden tightening of Rebry’s and Mihailovich’s pupils, along with the drastically fluctuating Magic Power aura, reached his senses. Komer knew if he didn’t alert the two right away, a Great War could erupt at any moment.

"Ladies and gentlemen, this is Miss Shatima, a friend I made during my exile. She is very familiar with the Cordillera Wilderness, Great Swamp Area, and Catania Channel, so I specifically invited her to be my advisor and help me deal with matters concerning the Barbarians, the Jellyfish People, and the Catania Channel. I hope everyone will offer her their assistance," Komer said while signaling to Rebry with emphatic eye contact and motioning to the Dragon Lady to stay calm upon detecting her alertness due to the abnormal reactions of Rebry and Mihailovich.

Under the questioning gazes of those present, the Dragon Lady Shatima graciously greeted everyone around her with noble etiquette. Rebry and Mihailovich remained vigilant but, upon Komer’s signal, realized there was some secret they shouldn’t pierce through just yet and respectfully nodded in pretense. Sault and Vladimir Koff, while intuitively sensing something odd about Miss Shatima, couldn’t compare to Mages who dealt with Magic regularly in their sensitivity and analytical abilities. After Komer’s personal introduction, they merely expressed a hint of curiosity.

Eve and Grace had a faint trace of jealousy in their eyes. Eve was much calmer, but the hostility in Grace’s eyes only grew stronger. Lome was the only one who already understood the situation; she was pleased that Komer regarded her as one of his own by informing her in advance. The others were confused and did not sense anything unusual.

Seeing Newman’s look of puzzlement turning to amazement and then fear, Komer inwardly cursed, and before he could speak out to intervene, Newman suddenly exclaimed, "Sir, where does Miss Shatima come from? Isn’t she...••••••"

Before he could finish, Mihailovich’s stern voice cut him off, his substantial gaze falling upon Newman’s nearly twisted face, "Newman, I know Miss Shatima bears a resemblance to the sister you lost, but she is not your sister. Look carefully. Would your sister be so tall? Don’t dwell in the memories of the past; they can lead to pain."

"My sister? Memories?" Newman gaped at Mihailovich, wondering when he had acquired a sister and what she had to do with Miss Shatima. This woman was clearly a human-shaped dragon. Could it be that Rebry and Mihailovich’s eyes were deceived, too? And even the Lord’s? At this thought, Newman seemed to have an epiphany, and glancing at the winking eyes of Rebry and Mihailovich, he suddenly understood.

"Oh, I apologize for my outburst. Miss Shatima, you bear such a striking resemblance to my sister who disappeared. It is said that she was taken by the Court of the Church of Light as a heretic. For seven years, I have been searching for her, but I cannot stand against those in the Religious Court. She surely has been burned alive by those lunatics in the Church Tribunal. Oh, my sorrow is too great," Newman said with a look of deep despair, his depth of anguish stirring the hearts of everyone present. Komer and Rebry, Mihailovich were inwardly applauding Newman’s performance, whereas the Dragon Lady Shatima, Eve, Grace, and Havier were moved with sympathy for Newman’s misfortune.
