Chapter 514: Volume 12: Blazing Demonic Flames Chapter 5: Deterrence
The deep, resonant voice immediately subdued the black-robed Mage who still seemed eager to stir, and the formidable strength displayed by the four Magic Knights made him hesitate to make any rash moves. Close combat was not a Mage’s forte, especially as the Wind Slashing Magic Array was gradually dissipating. To think of countering the four Magic Knights and the voice’s owner alone was clearly a risk.
His hesitation bought time for the Magic Knights. In addition to the four Knights who had been running and leaping over, three more arrived at the scene on horseback.
The Wind Magic Arrays, brought forth by three Magic Scrolls, ultimately dissipated as the magic power was exhausted, yet the scene remained extraordinarily gruesome.
Seven Assassins’ corpses lay scattered and sprawled across the ground, their dismembered parts strewn about, with the flesh blurred and dark red blood splattered all around. The Assassins’ distinctive attire made it clear they had come prepared for a specific operation: their uniform black leather tightly coated their figures, enhanced with the blessings of wind magic and agility spells, but this sudden attack had led to such an end.
The Bohemian court Knights were quite satisfied with the performance of Komer and his companions because their reputations and strengths were respected. Aside from two mounted Knights who kept a distant watch over the group, they did not take any further excessive measures.
However, the treatment of the Mage was vastly different. The four Magic Knights who had slowly descended from the sky pointed their gleaming silver Knight lances in a ready-to-attack position, fully aware of the powerful Mage trapped in their midst and not daring to be careless.
Knowing it was during the time of the magic competition, yet still daring to provoke and create trouble within Prague City, it was clear they had no regard for Bohemia’s court Knights or the Mage Corps’ Mages. That naturally meant some genuine substance, and the dense magical aura emanating from the Mage forced the four Magic Knights to remain highly vigilant.
The middle-aged Knight, who had voiced the deep nasal sound, dismounted lightly from an exceptionally spirited horse. With just two strides, he crossed into the Magic Array, which now only carried a faint echo of the wind, "Huh? Wind Blade! What a powerful Wind Magic Array!"
Surprise flickered across everyone’s faces; obviously, they did not expect to encounter a clash between two groups using a Magic Array here. They had assumed it was just a standard feud or skirmish. It was unexpected that one side had deployed a powerful Wind Magic Array, and the other side did not seem to retreat before it; at least from his viewpoint, both parties appeared to have the strength for another battle.
"You! State your name! Why defy the ban and fight here? Don’t you know that private fights are forbidden during the Round Table Conference and the magic competition?"
He did not back down because of the opponent’s strength; the dignity of a Knight cannot be scorned. The middle-aged Knight’s eyes narrowed slightly, his dark, lustrous gaze piercing like drill bits as if searching for a vulnerability on the black-robed Mage, seemingly seeking to land a deadly blow.
Since he could not escape the grasp of the Magic Knights, the black-robed Mage’s expression fluctuated wildly, as if trying to find a way out, yet he remained silent for a long while.
Fury flashed in the Knight’s eyes upon realizing that his words had evoked no response from the Mage. A flame of anger seemed to ignite within his eyes, but he did not lose his composure. Taking a deep breath, he turned his attention away from the Mage, who appeared still confused, and onto the group standing before him unwaveringly, "And what about you? What’s your story?"
"Respected Sir Knight, we are here to observe the grand magic competition in the Magic City. However, we were attacked by a group of Assassins from an unknown origin, as well as the Mage you see before you. The ’Wind Blade’ you felt just now was conjured by this Mage and his two companions who have already fled. As for the corpses lying here, they are Assassins associated with them. I believe if you question this Mage, you will understand the specifics," Komer stepped forward confidently, smiling as he met the Knight’s gaze with his explanation. It was important to maintain the necessary decorum in front of these Knights who believed themselves to be superior; any show of weakness would only lead to more contempt or even hostility. Keeping up appearances could help elevate their own status in the eyes of others and increase the level of trust in their words.
The middle-aged Knight’s skeptical gaze lingered on Komer and his companions. He was clearly not as easily convinced as Komer had anticipated. His intense scrutiny first fell on the Giant Warrior Burianos and the Dwarf warrior Bayezid, whose indifferent demeanor and consistently serious expression left the Knight somewhat unsatisfied and perplexed.
Bohemia is located at the intersection of the north and south of the Continent. It should be noted that it is not uncommon to see various races in this region, especially since the grand aura of Magic City attracts all sorts of species from across the Continent who are happy to visit. The knights have grown accustomed to various situations and are hardly surprised by anything, yet this particular group seemed unlikely to be mere spectators of the magic competition.
Despite the dignified man and the two beautifully young girls beside him appearing as mages and priestesses, young mages of such caliber are rare on the Continent. The middle-aged knight suspected that the men and women in robes were likely magicians or even magic apprentices at best, and the other girl could at most be a shepherdess.
Aside from them stood two oddly looking individuals. A voluptuous woman, though covered in blood stains, could not hide her assassin’s garb. And a young warrior, despite attempting to showcase his grace and demeanor, exuded a palpable air of sneakiness.
Could such a motley and strange group have really come specifically to observe the magic competition? The man before them, however, radiated an aura that was quite extraordinary. Within the many visitors to Prague, aristocratic children from different places were not uncommon, and it was difficult to tell if this man might be one of them. Bohemia has always placed great emphasis on etiquette, and although the middle-aged knight was highly doubtful internally, he dared not act rashly.
After casting his gaze over the group several times, whether intimidated by Komer’s calm demeanor or satisfied with the group’s compliance, the middle-aged knight finally hmphed softly through his nose and said, "Very well, but we will need to investigate this before drawing conclusions; I hope you will remain quiet during this time."
"No problem. We are happy to cooperate with you, Sir Knight. There are many around here who have witnessed this scene. They were the first to attack us, and we were simply trying to protect our lives and property from harm. I believe your investigation will prove our innocence," Komer replied courteously, nodding thanks.
At last, the middle-aged knight returned his gaze to the now composed Black-robed Mage, "Sir, you must have heard what they’ve said already. Do you have anything to explain? If not, you’ll need to come with me. No matter who you are, where you come from, or for what reason, this is the Royal Capital Prague of the Kingdom of Bohemia during the Magic Competition. The Kingdom’s Ministry of Internal Affairs has already expressly forbidden all personal battles and competition, and your actions appear to have seriously violated the kingdom’s laws. I regret to say that you need to come with us, and it’s best you save your explanations for the Ministry of Internal Affairs. I hope you will cooperate."
As he spoke, perhaps realizing the other party was unlikely to answer at that moment, the knight simply made his stance clear.
"I can do that, but I do expect to be treated with sufficient courtesy once I am there," the Mage finally spoke up.
"Courtesy?" The middle-aged knight didn’t show any outward reaction, merely nodding slightly, but deep inside, he pondered the implications of the word.
By the next morning, Komer and his companions finally gained their freedom.
The efficiency of Bohemia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs was commendable indeed, as they had gathered substantial evidence in just one night from around the site of the conflict. While there weren’t many people in that vicinity, a significant number had witnessed the confrontation, consistently testifying that it was the black-clad assassins who initiated the attack, and that the Mage seemed to be connected with the assassins, or perhaps part of their group, though proof of this could not be established on the surface. However, at least it proved one thing: Komer’s group were victims, forced to defend themselves.
Komer’s identity played an essential role too. He did not conceal who he was, although he only revealed his true identity when meeting with the upper echelons of the Internal Affairs Department in private, and requested confidentiality.
To a minor Baron, his status wouldn’t amount to much in Bohemia’s Internal Affairs, but Komer was indeed a real Lord of Caucasus. Now, as he had close ties with the upper echelons of the Kingdom of Nicosia and a deteriorating relationship with his direct Great Lord, these factors compelled the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Bohemia to be cautious, as they could damage the image of Bohemia’s avowedly neutral stance uninfluenced by external forces.
Thus, having gathered sufficient evidence, Komer and his party were immediately released. Before their release, an official from the Ministry politely advised them to alert the patrolling Magic Knights in advance if they sensed danger, to ensure their safety.
