Chapter 504: Volume Eleven: Shrouded in Fog and Smoke Chapter Sixteen: Joining the Group
"But does your Black Rose Mercenary Group only have the three of you?" Blinking, Komer still put on quite a moved expression.
"A mountain does not need to be high for it to be famous, as long as it harbors immortals; a water does not need to be deep for it to be spiritual, as long as it shelters dragons. The merit of a mercenary group is not judged by its size, but whether it possesses real team spirit and whether its members have true abilities. That is the main reason that determines whether a mercenary group can survive in the mercenary world. Our Black Rose Mercenary Group relies on this spirit of cooperation and mutual support to establish a foothold on the Continent. So, you need not worry too much about this aspect."
Having reached this point in the conversation, the girl had no choice but to bluff her way through, wrapping her words in a cloud of fog. The two before her seemed truly out of touch with the ways of the world, and perhaps some flashy rhetoric and ostentatious boasting might actually fool these unwitting treasures who had delivered themselves right to her door.
"Oh, after listening to Miss Bukharin’s words, I feel like I’ve also understood quite a bit. It seems I’ve also heard of the reputation of the Dark Night Angel Mercenary Group, renowned in the North. But I still want to know more about our Dark Night Angel Mercenary Group, such as the number of people, the identities of our companions, and the base of our mercenary group."
Komer’s face beamed with an innocent and silly smile, seemingly oblivious to the fact that there wasn’t a single valuable piece of information in the other party’s words, even taking pride in the boastful talk.
"Er, our Dark Night Angel Mercenary Group is currently in a period of reorganization. Some of our members have become arrogant and complacent after completing some arduous tasks, causing trouble everywhere outside. Thus, to enforce discipline, our group has expelled quite a few members. While it’s a drastic measure like cutting off one’s limb to save the body, it has indeed won a higher reputation for our mercenary group. So, our current members..."
The beautiful female assassin had not expected Komer to be so persistent in inquiring about the number of mercenary group members. Although she tried her best to convey her intentions, there was a key issue that ultimately needed to be addressed.
The number of large mercenary groups on the Continent can reach hundreds of people, while medium and small groups have dozens to a hundred members. Super-large mercenary groups can even exceed a thousand members, but such groups are few on the Continent, mostly located in the Southern Region.
"Miss Bukharin, you’re not going to tell me that our mercenary group now only consists of the five of us standing here, are you?" Komer couldn’t suppress a laugh upon seeing the other’s somewhat flustered appearance.
This beautiful young assassin was indeed too amusing, actually trying to entice him to join their so-called Dark Night Angel Mercenary Group.
Although unsure of where this mercenary group hailed from, by looking at the broad, elaborately styled leather belt at the girl’s waist, filled with regional flavor, Komer deduced that she likely came from one of those little countries in the northwest corner of the Northern Alliance.
Within the Northern Alliance, mercenaries didn’t have much room to survive, with the power of the countries being more significant; therefore, mercenary groups generally preferred to operate in the Central Region and the South. In fact, an obscure and small mercenary group like this was more akin to a small adventure team, differing only in their choice of tasks—adventure teams sought adventure for wealth and fame, while mercenary groups undertook tasks for reputation and profit.
"Of course not! We have two more companions who are currently searching for that detestable thief. I think we’ll be able to meet up with them shortly." Seeing Komer look somewhat astounded, the girl hurriedly explained, "Er, don’t misunderstand us. Our mercenary group truly possesses formidable strength. Among our companions, there’s even a Priest. Please believe us—if you join our mercenary group, I guarantee we will definitely retrieve our lost item from that cursed thief’s hands."
Komer’s gaze intensely swept over the girl, making her involuntarily feel short of breath as if ants were crawling over her body. She couldn’t understand why this seemingly dumbfounded person had such a piercing look. Could it be that all these magic practitioners had such glittering eyes or even felt somewhat lecherous?
Pretending to ponder for a while, Komer then nodded emphatically, "Alright then, Miss Bukharin, this is a personal guarantee from you. I believe you, but please don’t deceive us, for deceiving a Mage can have severe consequences."
"Rest assured, once you meet them, you will see that although our mercenary group is small in number, our strength is formidable. We were always active in the North, but now we believe the region for mercenaries is too constrained. We’re looking to venture into the broader expanses of the Central and Southern Regions, which is why we first came to the Magic City to look around and find suitable members to join. That you have such an opportunity to join our Dark Night Angel Mercenary Group is a stroke of good fortune for you," the beautiful female assassin quickly added.
"It seems that we really do owe Miss Bukharin our gratitude for giving us this rare opportunity. Please rest assured, Miss Bukharin, we will certainly cherish this chance to hone our skills," Komer replied earnestly. "My name is Reese, and this is my companion, Lome; we are both mages. We look forward to learning from all of you."
"Heh heh, Reese, my name is Bayezid, Bayezid Solein, from the Hulun Prairie. You can call me Solein, but I prefer to be called Bayezid." The Dwarf shook Komer’s hand excitedly, laughing heartily as he proclaimed, "Finally, our mercenary group has mages too! Now we don’t have to worry about business anymore."
Bayezid’s words inadvertently revealed more than he intended, causing the beautiful female assassin to both be annoyed and in a hurry, fearing that Komer and his companion would catch on. However, Komer appeared to be touched by the other’s enthusiasm, completely missing the slip in their words. "Nice to meet you, Bayezid. I hope we’ll fight alongside each other," he said.
The Hulun Prairie is located in the northwestern border region of the Northern Alliance. Part of it belongs to the countries and city-states of the northwest of the Alliance, while the northern part is under the control of the Wolf Clan and Cow Tribe of the Mogan Wilderness, making it one of the most dangerous areas of the Northern Alliance. Mortals have built a large number of fortresses and strongholds here, and there are also some Dwarf tribes living on the western edge of the prairie; it is likely that this Warrior, Bayezid, hails from there.
"My name is Havier, Havier Simpson, from Binos Tees. I am pleased to become your partner, and I will do everything in my power to protect you; I can assure you of this before the War God Mars."
The young warrior tried hard to show his best manners in front of the elegant and enchanting Mage Lome. Although Lome’s coldness and reluctance were evident, it did not affect the young warrior’s enthusiasm.
"I guess Miss Lome is also here in Prague City for the first time. They say this is the Magic City with many sights related to magic worth seeing. Would you be interested in a tour? I would be happy to show you around."
Binos Tees is a depression in the western region of the Northern Alliance, famous for its grapes and grape wine. It is studded with city-states and is a very economically developed region of the Alliance.
"Havier, didn’t you just say that it’s your first time here in Prague too? How can you offer to guide Miss Lome?" exclaimed the Dwarf warrior, his broad mouth hidden by a thick beard. He clearly did not understand his companion’s eagerness to please as he spontaneously inquired, "You were supposed to take me to the Lanolin Jade Tavern yesterday, and you said you were new to Prague and didn’t know the way around. How can you suddenly become a guide now?"
"Bayezid, would you shut your damn mouth? Does anyone have to assume you’re mute if you don’t speak?"
Angered, the young warrior shouted at his partner. This guy’s words always managed to embarrass him, and Havier did not understand how he ended up with such a teammate. Since they had teamed up, they had never completed a single mission or accomplished anything to satisfaction.
The beautiful female assassin looked somewhat awkwardly at her two partners as they started to argue in front of the newly joined members. This was not good for the reputation of the Dark Night Angel Mercenary Group. However, these two men were of no great consequence, and since Komer and his associate had expressed a willingness to join the Mercenary Group, she believed they wouldn’t go back on their word anytime soon.
"My name is Grace Bufalin. You can call me Bufalin, or Grace if you prefer. For now, I am the acting Corps Commander of the mercenary group. We have two more partners who are probably still in Prague City looking for that damned thief. If you two don’t have any other commitments, I think we should join forces and look for them. Once we’ve regrouped, we can discuss our next move. There are many thieves in Prague, but I believe there aren’t many Elf Thieves, and this guy is sure to strike again. If we guard a few key locations, I’m sure he will show up."
Grace did not indulge in much pleasantries, but she could still sense the intense coldness emanating from the female mage, which even seemed somewhat hostile.
She wondered if it was because of her earlier sudden strike, although she had already explained herself. Now that they had become partners, there shouldn’t be any issues. So why was she still so cold and hostile? Could this mage really be so vindictive?
