Chapter 464: Volume 10: Thunderous Movements and Winds Rising, Chapter 1: Unexpected Joy
With the official document in hand, Komer’s lips curled into a faint smile, it seemed that the Kingdom of Nicosia could no longer sit still, and it was time to negotiate.
The situation in Leon seemed to exceed what anyone was willing to accept. Homer’s army had suffered a devastating defeat, and the influence of the Caucasus, which the kingdom had anticipated, seemed to vanish overnight from Leon. The region suddenly became an independent kingdom, with no one able to influence the Half-Beast Mob any longer—a scenario the Upper Echelons of the kingdom definitely did not wish to see.
While the weakening of Homer’s strength was indeed pleasing to the kingdom, the defeat of Homer’s regular army was equally frightening. And if this locust-like, unchecked mob continued to exist, the negative impact it would bring should not be underestimated.
This was undoubtedly a living stimulus and encouragement to the slaves of all races living at the bottom of the kingdom. Should such phenomena occur throughout Nicosia, the kingdom might reap the whirlwind from the unrest and uprising it had covertly supported with the Caucasus.
To those in the Upper Echelons of the kingdom, this subversion of the traditional ruling system could not be excessively indulged. Using it for a while was alright, but if they were left to grow and develop unchecked, that would not align with the kingdom’s interests.
In their eyes, the best outcome would be to endlessly entangle the Homer People in this turmoil. For neither party to achieve a decisive victory was in the kingdom’s interests. Unfortunately, such hopes did not materialize.
What puzzled Komer was that the official document did not specify which member of the Royal Family would visit the Caucasus, causing him to harbor doubts. Could it not be Hoffman? Then who could it be? Renta? Or Katya?
Thinking of Katya made Komer’s heart skip a beat; the scenes from Versailles, like water flowing past his eyes, constituted a journey worth reminiscing.
However, it seemed that the struggle among the higher echelons of the kingdom was not so tranquil. The most hopeful Royal Successors were all holding back, eager to ascend that position, and winning His Majesty the King’s favor seemed to have become the most important matter.
Although the first in line for the throne had been determined, as far as Komer knew, His Highness The Crown Prince, who was the first Royal Successor, seemed to be in very poor health and extremely loathed affairs of state. He seemed to most admire the life of a wandering Bard, and had repeatedly stated in public that he would not inherit the throne of the Kingdom of Nicosia. Although he had been repeatedly and harshly rebuked by His Majesty the King, he still did as he pleased, which could be considered exceptional within the kingdom.
This behavior of His Highness The Crown Prince also ignited infinite hope in the hearts of those successors next in line. If the Crown Prince truly did not wish to take the throne, then who would occupy that position when the time came would depend on each person’s performance.
This is why the current Royal Successors spared no effort in diligently managing state affairs, hoping to leave a good impression on His Majesty the King to gain an advantage in the future battle for succession. Especially for tasks that were low-risk yet in line with the kingdom’s interests—these were perfect for those who had grown up in the court and were all too familiar with various conspiracies and betrayals.
Originally, Komer had little interest in meddling in these Royal Family squabbles, but his stance was different when it came to interests aligned with the Caucasus.
Without a doubt, Hoffman had touted the alliance with the Caucasus and support for Leon’s insurgent forces to strike a blow against Homer as his own achievement. However, such achievements came with significant risks, especially now that the Leon insurgents seemed to be losing control. This could give those in the kingdom’s Upper Echelons looking to exploit this event to undermine Hoffman a golden opportunity. And how to defuse this risk was likely the purpose of the visitor’s trip to the Caucasus.
Pondering the identity of the upcoming visitor, Komer considered the recent behavior in the Leon Region, preparing himself mentally for various possibilities.
Just as Komer was consumed with thoughts of how to handle the kingdom’s envoy, the arrival of a delegation from the southern Barbarians brought him an unexpected delight once more.
Looking at the pair of young dragons barely over a meter tall, Komer did his best to conceal the ecstasy in his heart, attempting to appear indifferent.
To be honest, Komer had never hoped the Barbarians would gift him these unique animals from the Cordillera Wilderness. To those Barbarians, the Earthwalking Dragons were treasures of their tribe. His initial outrageous demand for these creatures had been made without expectation, yet the Barbarians had truly brought him two young dragons. Although the number was less than requested, it was enough to make Komer sincerely grateful to this group of Barbarians from the depths of his heart.
Although these Earthwalking Dragons were far less powerful than Dragons among the Magical Beasts, they were still true dragons by name, the unrivaled kings among animals.
Even though the two little ones were reasonably calm under the tight control of several Barbarian Warriors, their curiosity and vigilance in the new environment prompted them to gaze around with large red eyes the size of fists.
Their brownish skin made the two young ones appear very robust and healthy. Their heads were not yet as fiercely terrifying as those of adult dragons, but they were beginning to show their imposing nature. A few whiskers, perhaps like the fine beard hairs of a Human young man, looked a bit immature. The occasional baring of their teeth revealed a set of not fully grown but already exceptionally sharp teeth, and the bright red tongues kept licking out as if they were always in a state of hunger.
